Root Installing cm7

Hi guys, so after a couple of months i've finally decided to root and get cm7. I've gotten my head around downgrading, getting radio s-off and getting rom manager, but what I'm wondering is... Do I need to get engineering s-off in order to install cm7?

Also, is installing cm7 as easy as downloading it from rom manager and installing it straight from it? And how long does it take to install the downgraded rom, and cm7 later on usually?

Thanks to el presidente for his great guide. There seem to be a lot of useful and helpful threads on this forum.

I'd appreciate any answers I can get! Thanks.

Alright mate - check this post... it's pretty comprehensive and includes details on ENG S-Off :)

http://androidforums.com/desire-hd-all-things-root/354749-how-root-install-custom-rom-desire-hd.html

EDIT - you don't NEED to get ENG S-Off for CM7, but it's worth doing (so you can flash radio's if you want). I did the whole lot a couple of months ago...

EDIT EDIT - sorry... have just seen re-read your comment and seen that you have already seen El P's link... as I said in the first edit... ENG S-Off is needed for flashing (amongst other things) new radios. It's worth getting it, as then you have absolute access to your device.

A word of warning though... if you are going to flash radios (or anything else that is done via fastboot), make sure that your device if FULLY charged... if you loose power when messing with stuff that involves you having ENG S-Off, you can brick your phone...

The reason to flash new radios is that some custom roms work better with different radios - it usually tells you that there's a recomended radio for a new rom (if there is).

Welcome to the forums and thanks :)

You can install from ROM Manager, that's how I got CM7 on and it went fine with no issues.

However, I know Devs for the original Desire have aired their concerns about ROM Manager and are advising folk not to use it. I was looking at sticking on ARHD and from the devs thread over at XDA they've also said not to use ROM Manager.

And yeah, all of that stuff that D-U-R-X said too.

Probably not going to get ENG S-OFF because I don't want to take any unnecessary risks just yet. If I can install cm7 without it, then I'll just not get it for now... took long enough working up the courage to do everything else haha.

El Presidente, what's the safe way of installing CM7 once I have done everything else, if ROM manager isn't as safe?

Well, as above, I had no issues with doing it via ROM Manager, but I can understand being paranoid if there are (apparently) potential risks :)

You could use ROM Manager to install Clockwork Mod, then use it to boot into recovery and do it manually from there.

You'd need to drop the CM7 zip and the google updates file onto the root of your SD Card, then select install from SD in clockwork.

As for Eng S-OFF, it's not 100% mandatory.

The process itself isn't dangerous. When I was going through the process, I PM'd the guy that wrote the Eng S-OFF tool and he said he's not had a single report of a bricked handset using his tool. If you're not comfortable, then by all means you can leave it.

Rooted, and installed CWM. Downloading CM7 now. I've backed up using CWM recovery (assuming that that's what they call NAND backup on the official CM7 post?).

Next steps on the post are: Format the system, data & cache partitions of your device, and perform a factory reset. Are these steps optional, or do they have to be done? Also, where do I do these things? On CWM recovery, or will it prompt me to do them when I'm installing CM7 once it's downloaded?

Sorry for the stupid questions... but don't wanna risk anything and want to make sure I do everything right :P

edit: finished downloading. Got options to wipe cache etc.

They're not stupid at all, it's a nerve wracking experience if you've never done it before. When I flashed mine for the first time, I was exactly the same.

The backup is called a NAND backup, make sure you 100% have one because if something goes wrong with the ROM flash, you can restore the backup and start again.

Regarding the wiping, certainly the data partition needs to be wiped. I know with LeeDroid, it wipes and overwrites the system and cache partitions when installing the ROM. I'm pretty sure CM7 would do the same, but if it says to perform it yourself in the instructions, I'd just follow them to the letter.

Edit - Yes, that's done from within CWM.

Done! That was alot less painful then I'd thought. Boot didn't even take 1min; thought it was going to take 5-10min. Thanks again El Presidente for your guide! Wouldn't have had the guts to do it without all that info in 1 place.

No problem, glad you're sorted! :)

It's a massive relief when it finally boots into the OS, and now you've done all the hard work, changing between ROMS is a pretty easy process.

Vanilla Android is a tad different to HTC's offering, it's pretty bland to be honest. However, there's more than enough about CM7 to make up for it. For me, the camera was the biggest let down, but Xyro kindly gave me the .apk for the MIUI camera which is an improvement (although not as good as the Sense camera) so let me know how you find the bundled camera.

If you've any problems/queries, you're always welcome to ask.

Nice one mate!! Welcome to CM7!! :D

Camera360 does a pretty good job as well, the interface may be rubbish (and no Video support) but I quite like it.

The CM7 video recording is not too bad.

Is the camera really that bad? I mean the quality can't be too different can it? I'm fine with the UI, don't use the camera too much usually.

To be honest, the camera on CM7 isn't great... I got the MIUI one, the same as El P (from the same post in fact).

If the quality bothers you, you can always try different camera's from the market to find one that suits... I hardly use my DHD as a camera - that's what my SLR's for! :)

Quality wise, it's ok. What was the killer for me was the delay between htting the button and the picture being taken.

I've a 2 1/2 year old and it's pretty hard to get decent pics (for a phone anyway) of him if I have to wait a second or so between the button being pressed and the pic being taken. It doesn't sound much, but when you're photographing something as restless as him, it's the difference between getting a semi decent picture and a blurred mess.

As mentioned above, Camera360 is another good alternative. I found it to be a bit of a battery hog though.

Trying out MIUI now, with this kernel: [KERNEL][15JUN]LorDModUE V4.0 BFSv404|ALL AOSP ROMS|OFFICIAL 2.6.35.13 - WIP - xda-developers (3.1, not 4.0 since WiFi doesn't seem to work on 4.0 for me). Boot times are really fast, and performance seems alot better with the kernel. Only takes around 10-15 sec to boot. Getting around 3200 quadrant scores (if they really matter) now.

In UE he has the phone overclock during boot, which is why it loads quicker than normal. I'm using 4.0 on Cyanogen with no problems here :)

I found that too actually. I uninstalled it, despite the fact I'd heard it was quite a good app.

Xyro, you seem to know quite a bit on overclocking, saw a post of yours about it before. Since the kernel I'm using ([KERNEL][15JUN]LorDModUE V4.0 BFSv404|ALL AOSP ROMS|OFFICIAL 2.6.35.13 - WIP - xda-developers) has the default governer set to Smartass, will setting the scaling to Smartass in SetCpu have any effect, or will it be pointless?

No, it won't have any effect. Same goes for the min/max speeds; if the default matches your SetCPU settings, there's no benefit to using SetCPU.

Personally however, I like to have SetCPU around to make sure everything is setup as intended. I noticed a few times that my processor wasn't going back to the normal 1GHz after he overclocked it during boot. Even though SetCPU should've sorted that, I had to do it manually.
