Root Installing custom kernel

Well you can set battery profiles too, so that under a certain percentage of battery, it will drop to a set cpu clock speed, but personally I dont feel it necessary. Most of the time your screen is off, so the screen off profile will be doing its thing anyway.

Also, whats the point running a smartphone with a great cpu, underclocked? Kind of defeats the point.

Most custom kernels are undervolted anyway. This means that at the full 998Mhz, your kernel means you use less power than the full 998 on a stock kernel. Even overclocked, you can still be using less power than 998 stock.

Hmm you're right. Battery drain has never been an issue for me on stock kernel but I wanted to see what underclocking did for my phone. Kinda experimenting you know. Isnt overclocking dangerous? If not what is the recommended setting for that?

It would be extremely dangerous if this was a PC. You overclock and supply higher voltage which creates extra heat. Extra heat combined with a higher frequency can cause long term damage, which is why a PC needs to be cooled.

However, since custom kernels are undervolted, the overclock speeds are achieved at the same voltage as stock (no extra voltage, means no extra heat, means no danger).

HOWEVER, some Desires can overclock to 1190Mhz fine. Others will reboot when the CPU is under stress and can't go over 1152Mhz. This is trial and error.

Also, if you find the phone rebooting when idle (screen off) the min voltage is possibly too low and you would need either a higher voltage kernel or to set the Min frequency higher.

Hope this helps
