Root Installing Gingerbread (Peter Alfonso)

I have not had any luck installing the latest Gingerbread build by Pete. I have had my Droid since last January, and have been rooted since last fall I guess, using the OneClick procedure. Other than using setcpu or similar apps, I haven't really done anything with the phone. I saw the latest Gingerbread build and got really interested. I followed the procedures precisely with what is found here, but all I ended up with was the m popping up twice, then booting into Clockwork recovery...never completely booting up. I have to flash the phone using RSD Lite each time if I want to use it again. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? The build I keep flashing with to return to stock is FRG83.

I greatly appreciate any help!

Just wiping data and cache is not going to be enough. I recommend you wipe data, system, boot, cache, and dalvik at least three times just to be sure. Also not sure why you have use RSD to flash back, have you made a nandroid back up? if so, you should be able to run a restore in cwm. I'd be willing to bet if you wipe everything before loading the zip files, you'll get past the boot loop.

I wasn't making nandroid backups...lol, I was too excited to get to gingerbread. I tried it again by wiping all of those 3 times each, including the ones that say wipe, and those that say format. Same scenario...moto logo twice, then back to CWR. Which specific ones should I go after?

Oh yeah, when I go to wipe dalvik, nothing seems to happen...no status changing as when formatting of cache, boot, system, and data. Is there anything happening if I don't see evidence of it?

Are you installing a rom and then installing a kernal seperate? If so, just try installing the rom only and see if that works. When you get stuck on the M and you've wiped everything, then most likely your phone isn't agreeing with the kernal.

I tried just the rom, no luck. Do you know of any good step by step how-to's on installing this specific rom for the Moto D1?

This is directly from Pete Alfonso...but really I need more details.

Unfortunately I don't have a step by step for loading Rom's but it appears you are doing it correctly. As long as you are wiping everything prior to installing the rom (using cwm) you really can't do it wrong. However I still think it has to do with the kernal. Have you loaded any other custom Rom's with any success?

It sounds like your phone does not like Pete's custom kernel. Pete uses a special kernel of his own designs in his ROM and if your phone doesn't like it then it won't load.

To try and overcome this, make a back up of your working ROM so you don't have to keep using rsd, wipe data/cache (the rom will wipe system and boot), flash the gpa rom, then without rebooting flash a different kernel (slayher, chevy, raidzero etc), and now reboot to see if it will work.

Usually it is not recommended to flash rom then kernel right after but in your case you may have to. Make sure you flash the ROM then the kernel or your kernel will be over-written by the ROM. Let us know how it goes.

Okay, I'm safe with backups, but I have a question about what specs I should look for with regards to another kernel. Please forgive my ignorance, but why does the same phone not work the same; meaning others have fewer problems, etc.

I've actually been playing around with Bugless Beast...since I've never tried roms before now...we'll let you guys know if I decide to go back towards GB. So far I love BB. I appreciate the help!

The reason that the kernels seem to have "attitude" with individual handsets within the same make and model are likely due to tolerance issues in the manufacturing process. In a nutshell, individual components are manufactured en masse, within tolerances set forth by the manufacturer. They allow for slight variation although these slight variations can cause incompatibility when voltages or temperatures reach the extremes of their operating range.

I personally have had a flawless experience with Pete's GPA ROMs and kernels. Try stepping down to Pete's GPA13, which has a locked kernel in it (max clock is 600MHz). It ran beautifully for me, and the locked clock speed made little difference in performance- it still ran quite fast and smooth.

question here, do you guys think it might be the ROM that he is coming from when going to gingerbread. I am not sure if that is correct, but I remember hearing before that when going to a 2.2 rom you had to have a 2.1 rom installed. Hope you guys understand what I am trying to say
