Installing icons

How do I install icons from .zip files?

Like these: Dark Matter HD - Icons by ~chrisbanks2 on deviantART

I don't want them permanently changed, just in Nova Launcher.

Since the download from Devianart is just a zip file of PNG files, you'll want to unzip them into a folder and then manually edit your icons. You can either download on a PC, unzip and copy to your phone, or download on your phone and extract using Astro or another file manager (estrongs, etc). In astro, you can go to your downloads folder, long press the zip file and choose extract, then create a new folder for the icons. Once you have them unzipped, just long press on an icon on the homescreen, choose 'edit', then click on the current icon to change it. Then navigate to the appropriate location of the extracted icons.

Other icon packs are zipped up as a theme or icon pack for a particular launcher and can be downloaded from the Market as an APK file and installed. This makes it a little easier as Nova Launcher recognizes them as an icon pack and lets you choose from that pack more easily than navigating to a folder.

do you know where I can find those glass icons for free?

Which ones? If you can post a link to them I am sure someone can tell you where to get them. Check the homescreens thread as people post the names of their icons.

Those are offered free at the xda link you provided. As for an apk, the author said they aren't meant to be a theme pack. I would imagine in order to convert them into a theme pack you would need the authors consent. Converting them would take a buttload of time and a ton of effort. Someone would surely charge a fee for all of that work.

Then if you have a lot of apps/icons, you'd have to do them one by one?

If you mean manually... only the ones you put on your homescreen(s). I'm not aware of a way to manually do the ones in the app drawer.

You say it like you put only like 5-6 apps on your home screen... Do you open apps thru the app drawer?

I do. I have very few icons on my homescreens. I have one folder of commonly used apps on my homescreen. I only replaced my homescreen and dock icons. I don't bother with icons in folders or in the app drawer because they are only visible for a second until I click them.

To me, there's no point in replacing every icon. It would be like decorating the inside of your closet for Christmas.

To be honest, I'm-kinda-sorta-well-not-really-ok-I-admit-it-I'm-anal-about-clutter and generally prefer a very minimalistic desktop with perhaps just a clock, weather, and dock bar (you should see my computer desktops.. no icons at all and if you think that's bad open up my desk drawers. All nice and neat and everything in it's place. I'm terrible lol.). But to answer your question... yes sir. I open apps via the app drawer. :D

Thought so :P Do you have a lot of apps though?

About 46 user apps, which is almost a bit much for me. I know others run a ton more than that though.
