Root Installing new ROM

zuben el genub

Extreme Android User
Still looking, but getting confused again.
I had CWM and ROM manager on the S. I forget where I got them. I see Play has them.

Now I'm reading about installing a ROM and some are recommending TWRP.
I searched here and found this:
http://androidforums.com/sprint-cri...ot/702932-rom-manager-even-worth-playing.html

Seems like all the questions I have get answered for different phones and technology.

1 - this is for a Galaxy
2- I have a GSM phone

3 - I got the phone and the update to 4.2.2 was there. I saw references to that update taking out LTE. I don't particularly care about LTE, but TMO is converting and I have no idea whether or not 4.2.2 would screw up voice and text with TMO futzing around. So I didn't update. I still have 4.2

Which one of these is more straightforward to deal with? I do have SU, I let it update, and the new one made a mess. Found the old copy and got rid of the update.

We don't seem to have a sticky here for installing new ROM on N4.

It is rooted and the bootloader is unlocked.

Google and I don't see eye to eye about phone or apps. I'm a minimalist.
I'm one of the people who can go to a 12 course banquet and grab a piece of bread and a cup of coffee. Don't care about the food, the conversation is interesting. Just because I'm not grabbing all the goodies doesn't mean I'm not enjoying myself, or the phone.

So you want to know how to install a rom? Both recoveries should work. All roms should have basic install instructions which involves backup, wiping existing data, and flashing the rom and google apps. Maybe you don't need to worry about LTE until it's relevant to you because a lot will change with roms between now and then. In any case, it doesn't matter so much what your current android version is since the new rom will replace it. Roms usually include a SU app that works, I don't know what your previous issues were.

Usual issues - developer language written on phone using shorthand and no antecedents. Or video where the narrator keeps going back to say what he forgot to say in the first place.

I like to print things out so I have a reference when I'm trying to do something. That's how I started with CM. They have a great wiki. In English.

I had superuser update 2 weeks ago, think I posted it on here somewhere: Superuser SU

That one gave me fits for a bit. It buggered TB. Will a new ROM include this version?

Is there a wiki for TWRP anywhere? I saw some screen shots and a blurb about new folders --

Do I download from Market?

Trying to get to stuff easily on this phone can be the pits. They buried USB debugging.

I like to find everything I need first and stick it in a folder on the desktop of the computer.

BTW - does any ROM have a cure for the file transfer? That new system stinks. MFT or whatever instead of plain USB over cable.

Hey there.

If you are already rooted then download GooManager from the Play Store. In the upper right corner of the app is the menu button. Press it and select Install Open Recovery. Thus will install the latest TWRP Recovery for your device. The app will auto flash it.

If you already have the ROM and GApps for the ROM you want to flash then hit the menu button again and select Reboot recovery.

Make a Backup. With this recovery you have the option to rename before starting the backup. You'll notice that to take that action you swipe. I like this. Moving on...

Now do a full wipe (factory reset, wipe system, wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache).

Now install ROM and GApps.

Reboot and you are good to go!

I like your instructions, but I'm still dithering about WHICH rom.

In order:

Which is the most stable?
Which is the most configurable/plainest? I bought ADW browser, I like it, don't want to change. I've tried others, and they assume. There's other apps I bought that I prefer. I don't need fancies. I use folders to organize. That and a fast swipe works for me. I do want better customization of notification bar. I also don't use widgets. Having a lot of this taking up memory kind of galls me. It's wasteful if you don't use it. Half the stuff already on the phone is wasted on me.
Do I have to change kernel? - this makes me slightly nervous
Do all ROMs update automatically now? - I'm asking if I get one I happen to like, and might not want to update just for cosmetics. Security is different.

I need to get something different on this phone. I'm still reading. I find something that looks interesting, and no info - at least none that I understand.

I think by ROM you are refering to homescreen replacements.
Maybe?
No you wouldn't have to change your kernel unless you want to.
And no most ROMs don't automatically update.

It seems like you are very particular about what you want, and that's fine. However, asking for the most configurable and plainest is too difficult because they are inherently opposite goals. Decide what features you want, and then find a stable rom that includes those features. If it has other features you don't want, just don't use them.

My only experience before the N4 was with a rom that had hardly any support, so buggy driver hacks and incompatible features made stability difficult. But with the N4, you have the benefit of very open source development and many developers. Features are shared and stability is easy to reach.

I haven't come across roms that auto-updates, that is probably not desired by many people, so I doubt any would force that on you. The goomanager app notifies you of updates though.

I understand that you want to be cautious about making changes to your phone, so try this. Make a nandroid and then prepare yourself for a week or month of your phone in a transitional state. Try things out, see what you like, see what works with your preferred apps, etc. Don't be quick to judge because a simple configuration issue might turn you away from the rom you'd like the best, and maybe it will leave such a bad taste you won't try it again. When you think you have something you like, "move" into your new "home" rom permanently

good luck

This is just my experience.

CM 10.1 has a plain vanilla look (unless you customize) that I like very much it also has configuration settings that give me almost total control over every aspect of the android experience, again that is something I really like. There might be other roms that do this as well but most I have seen give me visual things I dont want or need and I have to go searching for ways to turn them off.
I am using feb 22 nightly and I have not updated it, I see no reason to.
I do believe CM does have a update feature but I keep it off. The CM rom comes with a kernel but you can see if other kernels are out that have features you want, for example I read about PA kernel that will help fix colors on the Nexus 4 I tried it and like it.

I've been under the weather with myriad projects and still haven't installed anything. I know better than to do anything if I can't concentrate. Now I have another pet peeve.

It's that damn pull down with all the info on it. You can't edit it. I don't see why it has to show your wifi identity, a picture of you, and your carrier. If it hadn't picked up the pic from Viber, I'd write an obscenity over it. Maybe I can still do that using a created JPG.

Does any custom ROM let you edit this stupid thing, or better yet, turn it off? I like having just the stuff in the notification bar.

No, I can't lock my phone. If the Vulcan has to use it a screen lock would defeat him and he'd never remember a password.
I've put a password on the few apps that do use one.

What's a release candidate mean? Does it mean close to the finished product?

On AOKP, you can put a notification shade wallpaper.
BWEFC6z.png

It's in the middle of the above screenshot.

So you get that window shade pull down as well as the statusbar icons?

I use wallpaper as a background anyway. This setting would only add a different background to that window shade? That thing reminds me of Windows 8 with its blocks.

It wouldn't be so bad if they had just left the boxes as icons. A wifi icon is OK. A wifi icon with the isp and our name for the account is not. Same for the carrier. The data icon and bars are ok - but I don't need T-Mobile added to the icon. I don't need a space for ME, either. I'd like to change that to what the computer prompt is. Mine says "Yes, master" Then I could put in a sarcastic picture.

Maybe most people are not and don't - but I can see and register all this info on a screen in an instant. I'm sure that there are many others who do this also. That's why I don't like it.
