To get new programs on your phone, you need to go through the app called "Market". If your brand new to this, which it seems you are, I'm not going to delve into other ways as it will just confuse you being new. So just open your drawer and find the app called Market and you'll be off and running.

Regarding you SD card, you cannot add any apps onto the SD card with the 1.6 OS (which is what we all have, for now). You can use your PC companion Software program on your computer to access your SD card for music and photos. The program within the one I just mention to do all of that is called Media Go. Self explanitory once your there.
