Root Installing ROMS using Clockwork?

Hey everyone. I installed Cognition 3.02 whenever that came out. I followed a tutorial to do so, and i had no problems. However i'm starting to get bored of it, and ive been hearing a lot of good things about this new Serendipity ROM. I want to try it out.

However i just want to know if i have to go through the entire process i went through to put cognition on my phone initially. Do i have to do the whole ODIN thing all over again and master clear the phone?

Or is there a way to use ClockWorkMod Rom manager to just put serendipity on my phone without having to do anything else.

THanks

I did exactly what you are thinking about doing. Flashed Serendipity over Cognition. For the most part it worked but as the days passed I had a few hiccups with the OS. Finally went thru the process and did a full wipe and then installed Serendipity. Haven't had a problem since. I suggest you spend the extra time and effort on a full wipe and start fresh. Its well worth it.

you dont have to master clear but it is recommended to use odin and put your phone back to stock by clicking "start" on odin. then all you will have to do is put the rom on your sd.

what i do everytime is run titanium backup, put the rom on my phone, boot into download mode and use odin, once that finished boot into recovery, click reinstall packages(twice), then install zip from sd card. i can go inbetween 2 different roms in 5 minutes not counting boot time.

You did a full wipe with odin, then installed serendipity? How are you liking it?

@ Crimson Pride:

When i use Odin, will i have to re-root my phone? I just remember the first time i did this, it took forever. I'm not exactly super tech savvy. Then again, this isn't very complicated. It's just confusing for me.
And whats the purpose of this clockworkmod recovery thing then? It was on my phone when i installed the cognition rom. Also i have titanium. I'm not so concerned with losing anything, the only thing i want to keep are my text messages and pictures/videos.

Basically what i want to know is if i can save my text messages/pictures/videos in a way thats safe and easy to do that will also be able to be restored easily after i reflash the phone. I thought clockworkmod recovery did something like that, but in all honest i have no clue what it does. LMao

odin will unroot your phone, but if you never removed the update.zip off your internal sd then it will install clockwork recovery when you select "reinstall packages," so technically you wont even be rooted when you install the new rom if you do it my way.

odin will not wipe your pictures and videos if you just use "start." it will remove contacts but if you use titanium backup it will restore them for you. or you can sync them to your gmail and have them automatically sync back to your phone

clockwork recovery is basically the menu you see when you boot into recovery, well the one that has alot of options, the one that has about 3 options is stock recovery. so clockwork allows you to "install zip from sd" which is all you really need to install a new rom

So, lemme just see if i understand this correctly?
I use odin to masterclear my phone. Then i use clockworkrecovery to flash the serendipity? Or am i totally missing something here?

As for texts, im about to synch that with gmail.

no you dont need master clear, that will wipe your internal sd card. on odin there are 2 buttons, one says "start" the other is "master clear," all you need is "start." it removes all your apps and stuff but leaves anything on your sd card, pics, music, videos, etc.

and then you use clockwork to flash serendipity yes, its easier to put it on your sd card before you use odin though

So by just doing start that would get rid of the cognition based rom?

EDIT: Do i have to remove the cognition rom for serendipity to run properly?

running odin removes cognition, it doesnt matter if the .zip is on the sd card or not you can remove those whenever. and some people flash roms directly over each other without using odin inbetween which is possible but they hardly ever work without some issues

So by just using the start option on Odin, my cognition will be removed and i can safely load serendipity onto it?

Thanks man!

Well i successfully flashed. Had no problems! Plus im totally digging serendipity. It's rather epic! It seems much more smooth then Cognition. I also like how it's gingerbread stylized. Props to the folks at XDA!

Now you can flash the Paragon6 Kernel with SGS tools (look in your apps for sgs kernel flasher. it came with Serendipity). Its based on the same Kernel SErendipty uses and I'm seeing much faster speeds and longer battery life. I'm using the 1300 version might bump it up to 1400. A lot of folks over at the SErendipity xda thread are trying it out with great results.

By the way. Yes I did a full wipe. Not at first but after flashing over Cognition (being lazy) with Serendipity. I decided I wanted to clean my phone up like new, full wipe. No biggie. Just wanted to start fresh. Loving this ROM and the added Paragon Kernel is a match made in heaven. Battery life is the best its every been and benchmarks are outstanding.

How do i flash the kernel?

I was running 2.2 and have done a lot of reading a video watching (thanks Mobile Tech videos) and finally conjured the guts to flash serendipity.
I flashed stock using odin...that went great. Copied the update.zip to sd card. Installed zip twice in 2e recovery. Copied Serendipity.zip file to sd card. started in recovery mode, selected "install from sdcard" selected serendipity.zip file and it seemed to go through that process rather quickly. Then I selected reboot and then everything just started FCing all over the place. Help please. I can get it back into recovery mode. Tried doing the wipe data/factory reset. That did help either. Help please. I really want to try serendipity. Thanks again in advanced.

also now I tried getting back into download mode to flash back to stock or master clear. Neither work.

Help please!

1. Did you use Titanium Backup to backup your apps?
2. What method are you using to get into download mode?
