Installing the OTA 2.1 file

If you're on 1.5 stock.
Put update.zip in the root (top level) of your SD Card.
Turn off phone
Hold VOL Down, press POWER.
It will boot up and scan for PB00IMG.ZIP, should find nothing.
Press VOL Down to move to RECOVERY (press power to select it)
The phone will reboot into recovery and show a box, phone, and exclamation point.

Now you want to press POWER and HOME (soft key) at the same time. You should be presented with a menu. One of the options should be "Apply sdcard:update.zip". Move down to it and select it. Installation should start.
ya man im on 1.5. does the file have to be up top cuz it goes to the very bottum each time i put it on my sd.

Thanks for the instructions and walkthrough arothrock very insightful and easy to follow took maybe 20 to 25 minutes for the whole process all I had to do was resync my contacts everything else remained. gotta say I like 2.1 a lot better then 1.5 much smoother and a lot more polished.

Top level in this case does not mean the top visually, it just means that it is not in a sub folder. Like a:\ or c:\ on a computer and then the update.zip file needs to be there.

ok i did it and here is everything it says.
E: cant open/cache/recovery/command

install from sd
findind update package...
opening update package...
E:/ cant open/ sdcard/update.zip
(no such file or directory)
installation aborted

try naming it just: update
If you have your system set to hide file extenstions, when you rename it to update.zip, it might actually be naming it to update.zip.zip and that won't work.

i moved to 2.1 from theunlockr.com How can you tell if the 2.1 was the leaked one?

will there ever be a chance of moving from the leaked to OTA 2.1

Just to confirm, I want to make sure I have this right... by using this manual installation method, the following items are true:

- All apps remain installed and fully functional (including Market updates)
- All contacts will be wiped from the phone, but will be restored when re-syncing with Google
- All text messages will remain as-is
- All home-screen configurations will be lost, and reverted to the stock set-up

Is this list correct? Anyone?

What other settings are lost? As far as ringtones, etc...

Also, if waiting to receive the update via OTA method, do all of your contacts and home screens remain unchanged?

Thanks to anyone who knows these answers!

Your list is correct. And actually performing the update manually if you use the OTA file, it will install it exactly the same way as if you waited for the OTA. So that list is accurate for either method.

Check which version of hboot you have.
if it is 1.46 or 1.47 you have OTA.
Anything else, its one of the leaks.

ok well now everything loaded but now it says loading with a circular thing going around adn says it may take a few minutes. its been doing this for about 5 minutes now. is that normal?

yep, just let it go. if you had a bunch of messages and call history, etc.. it will take longer to load.

Yeah, a few parts of the process took a little while, and that was one of them. That is when it is loading sense.
As soon as that is done you are finally ready to rock.

well i went ahead and followed the directions on page 1. i had the Ra-something-recovery on the phone too, from theunlockr.com

so far i have followed similar prompts and saw similar screenshots. i never saw "deleting" files but a long time went on copying files.

on reboot it took 3-4 min to move past the Verizon screen. since then the phone has now flashed HTC and Verizon a few times.

i think my phone is looping. now what.

HTC Quietly Brilliant

Verizon Wireless

-Loop-

Ah, really?? I thought that the OTA method left your home screens...

Two more questions:
- What about calendar events? I assume those are linked with Google as well?
- Bookmarks... are they still there too? I thought I saw someone mention they lost theirs...

Thanks for the info!

I dont know anything about that Ra-something-recovery from theunlockr.com. I am not familiar with that site either.
My process went like this. I followed the commands, and the last step that required me to do anything was selecting the reboot option.
At that point, it showed verizon and HTC, then then went to the homescreen area where it took a few minutes to load sense. Once that was done, I was in business.
Im not one of those tech savvy people who figured out how to do this. I just followed the steps and it went smoothly. Hopefully someone can help you if you are stuck in a loop.

Calendar events are there if you have synced with google. Yes.
I dont have any bookmarks actually, so I cant tell you that, but it seems like things are pretty well maintained, I would bet yes.
Really the only thing you lose is the way you have your home screens confugured. Like which apps and widgets you have where.
All your apps are still on the phone, but you have to get them back on the homescreens where you originally had them.
Oh and I had custom ringtones set for individual people. Ringtones remained, but I had to re-assign them again.

well... i took the battery off to stop the loop. I deleted update.zip and moved my PB00IMG.zip back over. i shut the phone down and vol-/pwr booted. it picked up the PB00IMG just like the first time. Im prompted if i want to start the update... im going with yes.

oh goodness. since i posted that.... it froze on Verizon Wireless forever!!! but it booted to the lock screen again and now im setting up new user.

I -hope- this helps someone on their journey.

my last thought, if this version is working well for me, is there a reason to try for the OTA 2.1? i wonder if i can flash to a future custom rom, such as unlockr's stuff.

you guys are great and this is just the stuff we do... cant leave anything alone :O

Updated my wife's Eris with no problems on the first try. Very similar process when updates were released for the Droid.

My wife has to set her phone up again but her setup wasn't very complicated. Also, noticed that I can't set up speed dials.

Thanks OP!!!

You need to check all of your build numbers. If they all match the OTA then you have leak3, and you have no reason to hope for OTA. They are really the same.
If not, then you have an earlier leak, and you will have a few less features. You will want the OTA in that case.
Glad you figured out how to get at least something back up and running either way.

so this thread is long and confusing. Is there a way to install the OTA file on 2.1 version 1 leak? I never got around to putting version 2 or 3 on it.

I dont recall seeing anyone with v1 try. But I am thinking no. Check your version of boot loader or hboot and you should know then.
To check
Power off your phone
hold volume down while powering back on
you will see it on that screen that pops up.
To exit, pull the battery and then just turn it back on like normal.
If you dont have 1.46 or 1.47, which Im thinking you dont, then you cant do it.
