Installing the OTA 2.1 file

I THINK what we have here is....

1. you must be on stock, plain 1.5 for this to work.

2. if you are on 1.5 and tried this, and it didn't work...you are doing it wrong.

In other news. going back to this prl stuff. is anyone that has 51866 able to *228 and option 2. I keep getting unsuccessful and to call customer service

only thing i can think of is because it's the most up to date version already

You can go directly into the recovery console (exclamation point screen) by holding power + vol up. I still can't get past that screen though. But there is no need to go into the boot screen then choose recovery.

You didn't skip a step. This is the exact same process the Motodroid peeps used to update their phones a while back. You can google it if you don't believe me. They did mention that the combination of buttons (it's different on the Motodroid) is tricky, but they said it would go eventually. Well something's definitely going on here though, because they said it was tricky, not impossible. I simply can't get it to work.
Same deal here. I updated my wife's Droid with no problems on the first try. I feel like I know my way around phones as I've updated my iPhone to Beta 4 with no problems. I think this is just simply not working for some of us.

I have the zip file on my phone still in the event someone figures this out.

I tried installing this several times this morning before 7:00 my time to no avail. For a Friday at the office I'm actually busy so I can't fiddle with my Eris too much.

Nope, we're doing it right. This is the same process posted all over the webs a while back for the motodroid (though the motodroid uses different buttons).

yeah I tried that.. didnt work either.. it did load up the file for a little bit.. still cant get passed exclamationpoint..

After it loaded and went back to the menu, try turning the phone off, rename the PB00IMG.zip to update.zip, turn the phone back on while holding vol down and power. go directly into recovery. then press vol up (hold in) and press pwr.

If the "apply sdcard update.zip" menu doesn't come up, try a different combination of buttons..

Arothrock, were you sitting or standing at the time you did the update patch =P and which direction were you facing (north east south west)?

History of my handset:

1.5 to rooted 2.1
Heard about OTA, removed root and restored to 1.5 stock, now on Hboot 1.47

Tried the above methods, starting with rename to UPDATE.ZIP
-FASTBOOT ran right through because it didn't see the PB00IMG.ZIP, no unpacking took place
-Recover console would not flash UPDATE.ZIP from SD, failed (sorry, forgot fail code)

Also tried from start with PB00IMG.ZIP
-FASTBOOT saw the PB file, unpacked and then went to recovery
-Tried to flash PB00IMG.ZIP from SD, failed (Verification failed)

Toggled USB-MS and changed zip on the fly from PB to UPDATE, still no good.

<sigh>

Could also be the fact that my recovery console shows as
Build: RA-eris.v1.6.2

That is not Amon's recovery, is it? Might need to go stock on that, too. (I only went hboot stock).

Not trying to scare anyone into not doing stuff but i tried what someone suggested earlier and renamed it to PB00IMG and then went back to rename it update to install and now my phone wont go past the little skateboarding android dudes lol. Trip to verizon today i go. Hopefully they can fix it.

It may have something to do with the version of bootloader we all have vs. the one arothrock has as his was basically a new phone. I have no idea, I'm just guessing. Either way, the Eris obviously have a recovery console as we can all get to the exclamation point, but we just can't get it to do anything. It's essentially a mode that does nothing which makes no sense. Very weird.

This is not going to work, there is something fundamentally wrong here. No amount of buttons presses or renaming of files to PB00IMG.ZIP or PB12345.zip or PBPLEASEWORKNOW.zip is going to work. The steps he posted are correct, something is simply not working correctly on our phones. I think it has something to do with his version of boom loader or hardware as his phone is fairly new.

My theory on PRLs is that its radio-based... depending on the version of the radio, a specific PRL or certain PRLS are assigned.

are you on 1.5 though?

Yup, sure am.

I'm doing it all correctly. I'm fairly technically savy. I write embedded software for a living. It simply doesn't work. There is something wrong here, and it's not in the instructions or the way we're doing it. Something is different between our phones and arothrock's. I have no idea what it is, but something is different.

Well, I just got promoted to french fries, and I'm doing it all correctly, too. ;)
