Installing the OTA 2.1 file

Just out of curiosity, once updated to 2.1, can we remove the zip file from our SD card? I imagine we could, otherwise we'd never be able to remove it if the file itself was integral to running 2.1. But not sure....

Could everyone as they write that they got the OTA please tell us where your from so the rest of us might have an idea when we will get it?

Boston here still waiting....:(

Geographical areas are not relevant in a random distribution.

Picture it more as if a map of the world with all Eris users as shiney little magnetic lights. Then Verizon reloads their shot gun with bird shot and fires again, at regular intervals, at that map.

The pattern is random and only guided by a few of the magical little Eris lights on the map at a time. ;)

Did it last night manually. The first couple of times I tried it, it couldn't find the update file. Finally I took the .zip out and just had it named update. That worked great. The only problem now is I can't get the updated vociemail app to download. Only thing I lost was my page of "favorite number" that I had set up to dial when I touched the picture. All in all, a good experience. Beats waiting for the update to get to Minnesota!

You talking about the favorite people widget?
I previously had it set to call each of the people on my widget, and there was a little phone icon in the bottom corner of each picture.
After the update, I noticed that little phone was missing. But when I touched...cant remember if it was the picture or the name underneath, it gave the option to select the default action you want it to take.
So I just wen through each one and told it to call them all again, and it is working properly for me. Just required a little setting back up.

I installed the update.zip file from 1.5 and my phone was lagging really badly. It would even take up to 1 minute to change screens. I performed a hard reset and the phone is performing perfectly now. Hope this helps someone with the same type of problem. No issues with the actual update though as the instructions were perfect.

Can we try and get the REAL .zip now that a million people potentially just received the real ota simultaneously? And since the.zip that was posted was just the same buggy v3?

What are you talking about? The link posted in this thread is the exact URL that the OTA update downloads from and installs to your phone...

It's only your second post and you obviously need to spend some more time before telling me what I didn't do.. It's called a Ghost edit. If you edit your post within a certain amount of time after making that post, it will NOT show that you edited it. Can we stop this now?

Correct. I think it actually has to do with whether you're quick enough to edit it before someone else sees it.

If it's really buggy, you can try a factory reset. I've seen reports that that can clear up at least some of the bugs.

I installed the v2 leak and have no idea if the real update is coming to my phone. I've heard reports that it is but I'll wait and see. For those of you looking for the update, dial *#*#2432546#*#*. This "CHECKIN" looks for any possible updates. It'll say "success" in the notification panel. This will make the download avaiable for some, but not all. Give it a try.

I have a Mac and when I mount my phone to my computer, it opens up fine and whatnot, I drop the "update.zip" onto my phone or SD Card... whatever it is that connects. Then when I try all these steps, I keep getting the Aborted message.... could I have a little extra help or am I missing a folder or something? There is no folder named SD Card or Root or anything whenever I plug my phone into my Mac. Any instructions on SD Card stuff for Mac would be appreciated!! Thanks!!

Oh SH*T!
Followed every step listed on the update guide on phandroid.com and I'm running 1.5 but when I do the update process, my phone goes as far as "Installing Update", then reboots almost immediatley afterward. When the phone turns on, it's not running 2.1, and everything force closes. Got no cell signal either.
Somebody Help?

I'll get your response faster on twitter...

EDIT!: I'm just looking at my phone now and noticed it said UPDATE ERROR and prompts me that there is an OTA available.. just that I need to delete 25 MBs of space.... Damn.

Ok, what a long process - I rooted and upgraded to 2.1 v2 using the all in one package w/ Amon's recovery about 2 weeks ago (I just needed the navigation) - so today, since I don't want / need root, I downgraded to stock and removed root. I'm sitting at 1.47

If you're on 1.5 stock.
Put update.zip in the root (top level) of your SD Card.
Turn off phone
Hold VOL Down, press POWER.
It will boot up and scan for PB00IMG.ZIP, should find nothing.
Press VOL Down to move to RECOVERY (press power to select it)
The phone will reboot into recovery and show a box, phone, and exclamation point.

Now you want to press POWER and HOME (soft key) at the same time. You should be presented with a menu. One of the options should be "Apply sdcard:update.zip". Move down to it and select it. Installation should start.

I'm having problems after selecting Recovery - POWER HOME doesn't work - I get taken to a screen w/ a exclamation point in a triangle (it's a background image) w/ the following menu superimposed:

Reboot system now
USB-MS toggle
Backup/Restore
Flash zip from sdcard
Wipe
Partition sdcard
Other
Power Off

So I select Flash - and then next page lets me select update.zip -
Install from sdcard
Finding update package
Opening update package
Verifying update package
E:No signature (690 files)E:Verification failed

Installation aborted

So, I'm lost at what I should do at this point other than wait for the OTA - and will I get it or did it bypass me since I was sitting at 2.1 for a while?

I just want a stock phone w/ the navigation and the ability to take it back if I want.

Thanks tremendously for any thoughts.

Michelle

hey rename the file "update", don't put the .zip in it try that it should work.

Fixed it, had to use the kill keyboard function to get it to show the mic button even though the voice option was already on. Not sure why it mattered, but for anyone running v3 leak that can't seem to get the speech to text mic to show up on the keyboard, just go into the set-up and kill the keyboard.

Thanks andrew, its much appreciated.

Forgot to tell everyone... I installed the keyboard option to my newly updated 1.5->2.1 and it worked like a charm. :D

It is named correctly - in explorer you see update - and the icon next to indicates a zip file, it's not named update.zip.zip - thanks. It does find the package and can open it - it's the signature that doesn't seem to work.

Thought about this over the weekend. VZW (via twitter) has been saying that even those of us on the 2.1v3 leak will get the OTA. Along with features missing from the OTA. I am wondering could this a 2 step process? First they bring everyone to 2.1, which would mean the leakers and the OTA would have the same build, etc. And then release a patch update, to bring everyone to the same version, fixing any bugs and adding the additional features?

Just a thought
