Help Insufficient space....

GaryBC

Newbie
Hi all

Despite my phone reporting 24.44Mb of internal storage available, it will not install the BBC Media Player (which apparently only requires 9.4Mb).

I've uninstalled as many apps as I can get away with (actually overdoing it somewhat and having to rebuild my Home screen after deleting HTC Sense!), and re-started the phone (believing that this releases any memory that some apps may be hanging on to?) - several times.

Any ideas what to do? Either for installing BBC Media Player, or suggesting an alternate way of watching last weekend's BBC TV programmes.

It always used to work, by the way. I uninstalled iPlayer a few months ago to make space for other stuff. Has the BBC created a new - bigger - app, maybe? iPlayer used to be sufficient. Now, it appears, Media Player is required to watch TV.

Cheers,
Gaz

The problem is that it objects to installing apps that would take you below the "low storage" threshold, which is 15MB on a stock desire (10%). Although you might argue about the threshold there is a purpose to this, as app data and caches live in this space, so filling it to the brim with a new app install could leave many apps unable to function.

It may be that clearing app caches will free enough space for you to install it.

That makes sense, thanks. In which case, how to I clear app caches?

Also - something I've just thought of, is there a way of removing some of the pre-installed apps that I don't need (voice dialer, stocks & shares, weather, You Tube, Footprint, Flickr, to name but a few)? I reckon I could free up a couple of Mb that way!

Install android clean master app. Might help a bit

This one? Clear Master - Android

When I hit the "Download now" button I get automatically re-directed to Google Play - where it then says the app cannot be found (no shit, Sherlock - the app is from appszoom!). But I found one there called Memory Clean - which purports to do a similar job. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gannicus.android.memorycleaner&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwyLDEsImNvbS5nYW5uaWN1cy5hbmRyb2lkLm1lbW9yeWNsZWFuZXIiXQ.. - but doesn't solve the problem!

No, that app is just a task killer - waste of time actually. I tried one called App Cache Cleaner just now which worked without asking for root permissions, so that might be worth a go (don't have a link but the author was called infolife).

Unfortunately removing pre-installed apps requires root, and wouldn't help anyway - they live in a different storage partition. If you root a phone there are other options for dealing with storage, but that does void warranty and not everyone wants to do it.
