Help Insufficient Storage - An idea

Right, my phone is an HTC Desire. I have most apps on the SD card, and the following showing up on the phone:

  • Swype 3.2mb
  • Handcent SMS 2.1mb
  • Soccer Scores 1.75mb
  • eSpeak TTS 982kb
  • Tweetdeck 814kb
  • HTC Sync 328kb
  • Netcounter 213kb
AND THAT IS IT. I have deleted history, cache, checked mail settings, and everything is clean. So why cant I install anything anymore without the insufficient storage thing coming up?

Over the past 16 months I have downloaded a lot of apps, some have failed to install. Where do these go? Is there a folder or two that have these legacy files in storage? My idea is to find this folder, if it exists and delete the content. problem is file managers only access the SD card.

I cant even install a 500kb file anymore from the market. I'm sick of it.

delete some apps, download mybackup, backup what you can then factory reset it.

I only have about 5 apps on the phone now anyway!

More to the point, where has the memory gone? All the threads I have read propose different ways to fix, but none explain what the actual problem is.

Insufficient storage comes in at 15MB remaining. it could be anything. /data is not just taken up by apps but by settings and all sorts of things.

Theres no way I can give you an answer on what it is without having your phone in my hand.

I know you only have 5 apps and I am hoping that by deleting them it will let you install a backup application. I uninstall apps using uninstaller. Like you say, sometimes failed installs stillo show up and maybe that can help you.

Cheers. So would you back up data and apps, then do a factory reset?

OK then. I had 14.8mb internal storage left before the reset.

After the reset I have 128 mb left on the clean OS.

Installed Apps from myBackup from SD card - 87 mb left.
Installed Data backup (which took freakin ages) - 84.8 mb left

After the back up restore of data and apps using myBackup I have gone from 14.8 mb to 84.8 mb! Woop Woop!

Awesome. Although we don't know the cause, at least its running with a good amount of free space.

Hmmm.... after updating my apps, I now have just 38mb. Still an improvement.

Strange how many apps (maps, facebook etc) needed an update.

Oh well, 38mb still better than 15mb.

The way to see what's taking space is to go to Settings - Applications and sort them by size. Then maybe you can replace some of the apps that are on the top with a smaller versions.

However, rooting is the only way to permanently get rid of small internal storage issues.
