Insurance/equipment protction?

And since you only get two replacements a year, do you really want to chance wasting one of them on a defect? And don't forget...if you file an insurance claim, you pay a deductible. No deductible if you replace under warranty.

I'd suggest looking into extended warranties provided by credit cards. I know my credit card doubles the warranty of items purchased with it up to an extra 2 years. So if I have a 1 year manufacturers warranty, I have 2 years' coverage. Not sure how it works if some of the phone's cost is paid for by signing a contract though. Also, that situation covers defects, not being stupid or having the phone stolen.

Maybe it's possible to do the above and then get separate coverage for of the phone is dropped/stolen.

I can't see myself loosing my phone, but I can see myself dropping it (I feel like Austin Powers, "Allow myself to indroduce...myself"):D. For the cost of assurion ($10/month plus $100 deductible) I think squaretrade would be the better deal for me.

The $10 is for the Fruit devices.

I'm surprised that nobody here knows about this outfit.

I insured my DInc with them, price is great and service is excellent. My original was stolen, I submitted the claim and had a check in my hands within a week. Free to purchase whatever phone I wanted.

I normally don't make it a point to endorse companies, but I can tell you from experience that they are the real deal and there is no way I would go with anyone else. The price is better than any of the aforementioned companies. I will be switching my coverage to the GNex with no reservations when I can finally get my grubby paws on it :-)

Theft is covered, but if you just lost it? That is not covered, and (at least in my case) is more likely. :p Also, it's worth more to me to have a new phone the next day. It is a good price, if that policy meets your needs. I guess it's good there are so many different options...to fit a variety of needs and risk comfort levels.

To compare, the cost of this plan is $112 for two years, plus a $50 deductible if you have a loss...total of $162. VZW TEC plan (more coverage) is $168 for two years plus $99 deductible, but you also get an extra year of warranty (to which no deductible would apply), and coverage if you simply lose your phone. Pretty comparable, I think, if you're comparing apples to apples.

I just got insurance through Wirefly for my new Dinc2. It seems like a really good deal, maybe too good to be true. It is coverage for either $69/yr. or $7.50/mo. and it covers the phone against the usual things. From what I can tell, it covers loss (from my email: "A police report may be requested for a lost or stolen cell phone."). The thing is, there is NO deductible with this insurance. I got the monthly coverage because I wanted to review their policy further. Anyone heard of them?

MobileDeviceProtection.com - Protecting Mobile Devices for over 20 years

Edit: They do not cover liquid damage, which is how my Droid died. Also, they seem to be a combination of Square Trade and regular insurance. If it's damaged they want you to send it in. Blech. Good thing I only got it for the first month.

Wow, this covers everything for a fair price and only a $50 deductible, not bad! I also like the fact that they send you a check, and not a replacement, so I know what I'm getting.

2 year price $99

covers: mechanical and electrical

accidental damage and handling
loss and theft
full immersion
deductible $ 50.00
# of claims 3 per year

sounds pretty good to me

From their web site:

"Simply ship the inoperable unit to our repair depot in one of our pre-paid envelopes and once we receive it, our skilled technicians repair the equipment to the OEM specifications and return it to you within 5 business days. If we are unable to repair the product, we will replace it or you will receive a reimbursement for your coverage amount. Simple as that."

So, you will need to call them up, they will mail you a pre-paid envelope (2-3 days minimum) you will mail it back (2-3 days minimum) and they will take up to 5 days to return it to you (then another 2-3 days...) All in all you are looking at 2 weeks without a phone unless you have a spare you are outta luck. The good news is OS = Android, your contacts, etc... will still be there..

I'll stick with Assurion. Call them up, they next day a phone to me with return postage for my damaged phone.

Assurion seems to be the general consensus here... Do I sign up for this at my local vzw store or can it be done via phone?

I've been considering ensquared...they make you pay $100 up front and you're covered for two years. Seems to cover everything, including loss/theft, submersion, etc. Only $50 deductible. Seems like a good deal, but has anyone else had any experience with them?

Also considering Verizon/Asurion insurance, but cost over two years is around $200 with a higher deductible. Not sure if that's the way to go...

Being in the insurance business for 20+ years, I can tell you, you truly do "get what you pay for". My advice is to read and compare the policies you are considering very carefully, know what is covered and what is excluded, and compare the cost versus your personal level of risk and comfort with taking risk. The result is going to be different for everyone. I am risk averse, so I generally take the more conservative approach (higher cost, but highest level of coverage - Asurion), but others are willing to gamble a little to save $100-150 over the course of a couple of years. It's not a question about what is best, it's a question of what is best for you.

The good thing about Asurion is if you can sell your phone for more than the insurance cost. I had my OG Droid replaced twice from water damage. If it was worth more than the deductible and I had claims remaining, I may have to file a claim for water damage, get a replacement that is refurbed, upgrade, and sell the refurb.

You do realize that if you file a claim for water damage and they find no water damage when they receive your phone that they will charge your account the price of the replacement phone right?

Water damage isn't hard to come across.

You can do it both ways. However, you must add Assurion within 30 days of your purchase.

Maybe I'm just not willing to go through the hassle of purposefully damaging my phone and paying the deductible (which increases with each claim I believe) only to try and resell if for slightly more than the deductible.

Have had nearly 30 mobile phones in the last 10-11 years and never had insurance. Not one of them was broken and needed out of warranty repair. Not one was lost. Not one was damaged. Insurance you say? Unless you have it covered under your house insurance at no extra cost or you are going to get the full amount back at the end of the term it is a waste of money.

I'm with you on this. I don't get the insurance. Been using cell phones for 16 years and have had about a dozen phones. I've only lost one phone, and have only needed one warranty replacement. I can afford to pay full retail if something happens to my phone that's not covered under warranty.

Assurion...I'll get it. I have it on 3 smart phones on my plan. Never once had to use it (I did have to replace a few Droids, but they where manufacturer's defects and I had new phones to me within 2 days including shipping). It's the peace of mind I prefer to have. Deductible is far easier to stomach than paying retail for a replacement (or god forbid having to buy a cheap feature phone if I didn't have the cash at the time).

Oh, and the 1 year manufacturers warranty? I straight up told Verizon my phones where rooted. They didn't care and I had no issues. I asked ahead of time in both situations just in case, because I would have just used RSD Lite if needed, but they said no problem.
