Insurance for replacing a new one?

Hi everyone,

Im new to this forum and smartphone society, so there are a lots things I dunno and waiting for me to learn.
Generally, I just wonder how the insurance works. Because my friend drop my less than 1 week old inspire while playing with it. The camara is slightly scratched and the part around it+the edge of case have some obvious damages.

I went to at&t right after it happened, the representative I sign up the phone with 2 year renew contract wasn't there. So I just talk to random one and the answer I got is there is deductible fee $ 125 for replacing a new one?????????? I was like thinking WTH O.O....

If i did not remember it wrong, the representative signed me up told me the insurace covers EVERYTHING including accidently drop, water damage ete, and that is why he recommand me to enroll it if I am not going to get a protector case. So I assume that means I can get a replacement without paying extra fee.

Am I understanding it wrong or just being too naive??

ps. I told him this is my first smartphone i dunno anything...when he asked me to enroll the insurance I told him I dunno whats that, and he just simply told me it covers everything and did not mention anything about deductible fee.

Thank you for your help and patient for reading this long thread...lol

yes it does cover accidents but there is still the $125 deductible basically cause it is a smartphone.

So you pay the $4.99 a month and if something does happen to your phone it's $125 to replace it. so if you have the insurance for a year and then drop and break your phone its (4.99*12)+125=184.88 total for a new phone of course that 12 months of 4.99 a month was already paid on your bill so you just have to cough up the $125

Wireless Phone Insurance - Wireless from AT&T

I got it at AT&T store, and there was only 1 insurance the representative gave me..he did not tell me there is more than 1 and nothing about deductible....
that is why I was too naive to believe what he said "the insurance covers everything"

if you got it from the AT&T store then the insurance is through AT&T and does have the deductible look at the link i provided above it describes their insurance and has a list of eligible phones and their deductibles.

i never get the insurance after the cost per month and the deductible its just not worth it IMO. Even the best buy ins with no deductible thats $120 a year so unless you break the phone within that first year the cost out weighs the benefit after that year you end up nearing your next upgrade on your phone contract and a new phone would end up being cheaper

the only phone i have ever had insurance on was an iphone and it broke after a year(was dropped and screen cracked). it cost me $90 for a 2 yr warranty.

the representative I talked tonight was using an example on car insurance which made me more confused..

Honestly, I feel so regret that I got the phone from AT&T......

I think i will still go talk to the manager or the one sign me up to see if there is something they can do....(I am sure there is always "something")

cant hurt to try. worse case is they say you still have a deductible to pay or you can cancel the ins and deal with the phone the way it is.

I bought mine at Costco with my Amex card, I'm covered either by Costcos customer friendly policies, or my American Express card since it adds a extended warranty and loss/theft replacement.

Check the credit card company you used to buy the phone, most have coverages. I have found that the Amex one is the best though so I tend to charge all my electronics to it.

I am ok with the $125 deductible, its better than $399. Ill drop it after about a year but for the first 12 months its worth the $4.99 a month.

They even cover it if you lose it, i dont think best buy does that.

Thank you for all your replies and suggestions. I appreciated.

Well, if the
representative told me about the deductible when i got the phone, I would not feel so upset and mad like this. It just makes me feel I got scammed by the phone company I have been used for almost 10 years. That is why I want to go talk to them, even though I might not get the answer I want, but at least that will make me feel a little bite better.

I would like to add that the insurance really depends on what type of work you do. I'm a mechanic/technician and I also work around a lot of water. So the insurance works out for me. I have used it and it's the best.

You don't have loss/theft from amex. They give you a 90 day window after you make the purchase in case the phone is stolen or damaged, but not lost.

It covers loss, they replaced a Flip device that was purchased then lost (We left it somewhere) when we were travelling with it. Amex is pretty good with those things.

The extended warranty is 5 years, which is pretty damn good considering you pay nothing except your yearly fees to Amex.

Right now I am comparing: SquareTrade vs. AT&T vs. My Homeowners, any others out there I should consider?

i had squaretrade with an iphone. it was a painless process when the phone dropped and the screen cracked. one call and they sent out a replacement phone. it was like $90 for a 2yr warranty. i think they might have a $50 deductible on smartphones, but i dont remember them charging me.

at&t for 2yrs is $119.76(if you dont end up using it before the 2yr mark) plus $125 deductible. also a + here is you pay the $4.99 montly, with squaretrade you pay the $90 upfront

im not sure about a homeowners policy but i have heard they can be cheaper than at&t

oh and with squaretrade make sure you have the receipt. they require that for the claim but they offer a service that saves your receipt. once you sign up for the warranty you will see an option to email or fax a copy of the receipt in and they will hold it on file. i did this and its a good thing cause i bought my iphone 1 1/2 yrs ago and had no clue where the receipt went.

Thats crazy, I only paid $79.00 for the phone, so if somthing happens my deduct is more then what the I payed w/ upgrade...stupid

You're paying full retail price for the phone if you are still under contract when something happens, you can't get another for $79. Nothing stupid about insurance, $125 seems a hell of a lot cheaper than $599 or whatever the MSRP is on the phone.

Exactly. If you don't buy insurance on one of these phones, you're nuts, especially given the cost. However, insurance doesn't work if you do something to the phone within the first 30 days.

Case in point: I had something drop on the face of my Inspire last night after only owning it for a little over a week. I'm hard on phones, but this was very unexpected. Cracked it to the point where I couldn't use it. Had to by a new one at MSRP today at a tune of $565. I had to buy it outright because the insurance doesn't kick in until 31 days after the sale. I even tried calling AT&T and the CSR tried hard to reverse the upgrade but it didn't work. She was nice enough to credit my account $75. Better than nothing. I'm out $490, but that's better than $565.

The screen under the plastic top broke due to a bottle of lens cleaner taking a pointed dive from 3 feet. Little too much weight for the screen to take.
