Insurance for the Thunderbolt

Has anyone opted for insurance for the Thunderbolt?

If yes, where did you get it from and what are the monthly charges?

I got mine from Z Wireless when I picked up my TB. Got the two year coverage for about $120. It's less than paying the monthly with Verizon and it covers everything, including water damage and even if the damn thing gets run over by a car. It's really and truly FULL coverage.

Yes- they said it was 'only' 1 dollar more per month, so it went from 5.99 per month on my Blackberry to 6.99 per month now with the Bolt.

Wish I knew it was cheaper to pay it all upfront...

Yes. I always opt for insurance because you never know. I wish I had a homeowners policy to put it on. That seems to be the way to go.

Got it for $99 through squaretrade for 2 years, cancel anytime for prorated refund. Covers defects and accidental damage, but not theft/loss. $50 deductible.

I got the T'Bolt on a 1-year contract today and opted for the $6.99 per month insurance that Verizon offer.

Assuming I had not purchased the insurance and had lost the phone before my contract would have ended, I would have had to pay the full retail price according to the sales person. Why is this the case? Technically, aren't we supposed to only pay 'Full Retail Price - Price that we purchased it for'?

Or was the salesperson lying to get me to sign up for the insurance?

Don't even over think this phone just buy it from VZW it is only 9 bucks extra a month and you will kick your self in the butt later if you don't cause you won't be able to replace it for that kind of money. When i first got into smart phones in ever would of though of it then I went to buy the droid first gen, when I said no the gal kind laughed and then I realized i better just in case.

6.99 a month for tep. Well worth it.

10/mo and best buy. No deductible, However doesn't cover a stolen phone... which I'm worried about. but you can smash it root it do whatever and still get a replacement for free

I did the same at BB. It has no deductible and the claims are unlimited; VZW has a $160 deductible and you can only have 2 claims. BB also covers water damage, dropping, and your battery! You can cancel at any time. Since this was the first smart phone for me and I could be the one that drops it on the sidewalk, I thought it was well worth it!

I'm looking at the insurance on VZW website.. So there's two different insurances provided by two different companies? One by VZW and the other asurion? It shows $6.99 for VZW and $5.99 for Asurion. Which one is better?

Not so sure about that, the minimum deductable for homeowners now is about a grand, so i don't think you want to do that.

True, but for specific items you can reduce the HO deductible.

Someone mentioned above that the squaretrade insurance is only $99 but doesn't cover theft. I think that might be the route I go - I've never had a phone stolen, it's usually in my pocket.

But first I'll call my agent and ask if I can get it added to my floater policy that covers my jewlrey and watches.

Both are Asurian..$6.99 is total equipment protection. Basicly extends waranty to two years and you get an app by Assurian to track your phone if lost.

Lol @ Deductables... That's what Renters/Home Owners Insurance is for...

I got two thunderbolts, both with 2 year Advanced Black-Tie Protection from best buy, $128.98 total (for both)

Covers everything other than fire, theft, and full submersion in water (Renter's covers that stuff)

BB says they'll replace a bricked phone? Do they actually list 'rooting' as a covered issue? Of so, my insurance search ends with BB!

I don't have any insurance on my TB at the moment. Is it still possible to get it? The more I read about horror stories on here the more I feel I need it. The Best Buy coverage sounds pretty good. I bought my phone through Verizon. Is it possible to buy the coverage from Best Buy if I didn't buy it from them?

Yes i believe that Asurion is still having open enrollment, but u have to enroll before May 13th

Comprehensive Insurance and Post-Warranty for your Verizon Wireless Device

But before i do that i would maybe contact Asurion and ask them if the phone that u have now is going to be covered. Since i am pretty sure that they can contact Verizon and ask them when u bought ur phone.

The Insurance for the phone is not covered by the homeowners policy (at least not on mine). You get a supplement to the homeowners policy for it. My supplement is through Inland Marine. It's for stuff that the homeowner keeps at home but takes out of the home when travelling (also for guns and such). It covers everything (theft, destruction, water, etc.) but not software problems.

I have this on my Incredible as well. For $600 of coverage, I pay $36 a year with a $100 deductible. On my Tbolt I have the coverage set to $700, but can't recall what the rates & deductible is.

The nice thing about this kind of policy over one's like Asurion & Best Buy is I'm not locked into the Tbolt if something happens. When anything happens, I submit a claim and they cut me a check for the covered amount, whereas some of the other insurance policies replace the phone with the same model. This way I can get a newer phone with better specs in the event of loss or damage.

If I don't file a claim, I'm only out $72 over a 2 year period vs. $130 for Best Buy or $167 for Asurion. If I file a claim on the 24th month, it's $136 vs. $130 for Best Buy or $267 for Asurion.

Umm, you do realize that the BBY insurance doesn't offer immediate replacement right? And if BBY sold you on that they were lying.

If you read the terms and conditions they will send it out for repair by Touchstone and you will get it back in about 3-4 weeks MAYBE repaired, and if not then they send it back out again.

Oh, and a $150 deposit if you want a temporary phone, but it will be a small generic piece of junk.

Overall, the deductible for Asurion gets me a new phone the next day or two, not 3-4 weeks.

Also, I don't know about the whole Squaretrade, I trust them with my laptop, NOT my phone.

Yeah, I'm not a fan of BBY protection either. I have put their protection plans on both laptops I bought through them. The first one I had (Toshiba Qosmio) just wouldn't start one day. I took it in to Geek Squad & they sent it out for repair. After not hearing anything on it for a month I started hounding them for an update. Finally just shy of the 2 month mark, they just told me to go into BBY & get a replacement off the sales floor (up to $900). It's great that I was able to get a new replacement, but going without a laptop for 2 months sucked big time!

With my second laptop (Asus G50 I got as a replacement) the power supply started going out. That took 3 weeks to get replaced (after a LOT of time spent on the phone trying to get the situation resolved).

To me, BBY isn't worth it in the smartphone arena either, especially if your buying retail. The Tbolt's retail was $600 (now $570) through Verizon vs $750 through BBY. The only thing they have going for them is their trial period (30 days @ BBY vs 14 days @ VZW).
