Insurance?

Thanks for all the replies. I had my Iphone for almost 2 years and no issues, so maybe the Captivate will be the same way with no insurance. The way I look at it, youre just betting something might happen.

Let's say hypothetically, I'm a manager at a COR store. Of course I would never say I work for AT&T under any capacity, and am not pretending to represent them outside of such a specified role. If I was though:

Insurance is $5, the deductible is $125. It covers literally everything, and they overnight the phone for free.

The iPhone cannot be insured, and our system won't let you add the insurance to it. The captivate can be, and will let you add it. The 9700 retails for $450, and we insure that too.

This is too funny!

I have the $5 insurance on all 4 of our Captivates in our household. I have used the insurance at least a dozen times throughout the years for our phones so its a must. We have lost phones, had several phones stolen, dropped 1 in a lake, dropped 1 in a toilet, my daughter dropped hers in the jacuzzi tub while texting. One thing I didn't think about though is dropping the insurance once an upgrade is ready. Good plan!

Ok. I'm new to high end expensive phones (got mine for free). I never bought insurance and at&t always replaced my phones when they stopped working. I assumed this phone would be the same.

Insurance is not for warranty coverage, which lasts for one year after purchase, covers manufacturer defects, and is free to you. It's for things like dropping the phone in the toilet, or shattering the screen on pavement. Warranty will not cover damage you inflicted on the phone, and if this happens, you have buy another yourself for $499.

I think that $150 is way too high for insurance, because if you go for that, you assume that there is at least a 30% chance of you damaging the phone within the first six months (when a replacement would cost you $500) or a 54% chance of damaging it within the two year contract period (because early upgrade replacement cost for this or an equivalent device after six months is only $275). Do you damage half or third of the phones you buy? Don't buy insurance, and use the savings to get a replacement in the event of an accident. Even $5/month for 24 moths adds up to too much money, because there is a deductible to get a replacement on top of that. Just take your chances and handle it carefully while you have it.

i really wish my phone was insured when i took an unexpected dip in the pool last weekend. i opened it up and the insides are all corroded. luckily my phone now works fine a week later.

This is a rather simple and obvious idea, but I just thought I would share it.

I put $10 per month in my "self insurance account".

As they say "time flies" ... before you know it you have a pretty nice sum of money saved, in case you damage or lose your phone.

In the event you do not need to use it, then you're really ahead of the game because you paid yourself, not someone else.

Cheers... :)

Most phone insurances won't cover water damage anyway.

I added the 5 dollar insurance when I got the phone first day it came out in NY. I called customer service and I needed to swap phone cause I cracked the glass on the camera they told me the the replacement was 50 bucks. Now out of curiosity is that something that can be added to the bill for the next month

Exactly! Also, it guarantees me a new phone and not a refurbished one. I don't like sloppy seconds. :)

They send your a brand new one? I thought that at best they only sent you a refurbished phone and at worst a refurbished phone of a different make and model.

I never buy insurance unless mandated by the government. And medical and dental for obvious reasons. From what I've read all forms of insurance on electronic goods (and everything else even the stuff mentioned above) is a rip off. They wouldn't offer it if it didn't make them money. You have a small chance of actually exercising your insurance privileges, although increased due to the nature of a cell phone. SO unless you know you are a klutz or absent-minded do not get insurance. Buy a 10$ case, always leave it in your pocket when you're not using it, and don't use your phone while you're in the bathroom! Then you're golden. Or not. ;)

Not only can it be added for the Captivate it can be used. I dropped mine within days of adding the insurance. No questions asked...brand new phone overnighted. There is the matter of the $125 deductible...still better than $500 to replace the sucker.

^^THIS^^

A great lesson in personal finance that I learned years ago. Always self-insure when possible. It's always the cheapest option. Also, I always keep my most recent phone when upgrading, so I have something to fall back on if I can't afford to replace the newer one right away, or have to wait to have it repaired.

Many homeowners insurance policies now cover electronic equipment, including phones. Mine does. Check your policy for it, or whether you could get it. Usually they lump in "electronic devices" which includes your phone but if you parse it out and divide by the # devices you cover for loss (including often the music or video you download!) it comes out to less than a buck a month for your phone.

Don't forget your homeowners!!!

The att rep offered me protectcell.com. I paid $60 or $70 (for 1 year) and no matter what happens to the phone, if I request a new phone there is a $50 deductible. She even said if the phone is lost or stolen they don't ask questions or want any reports they'll just send you a new phone.

Anyone else get insurance through them? Should I have gotten something different?

I paid $175 I think from the get-go. It was $100 for one year, or two for $175. Can't remember who the insurance is actually from, but it's a $50 deductible. The rep literally told me that if I was outside the store and threw the phone out at the ground then came in and requested a new phone, their was nothing he could do, he had to give me a new phone.

I got the $5 insurance plan. Usually I don't buy these since I'm really careful with my electronic items I own. But since smart phones are so valuable these days I decided to get it.
