Root Interesting move by SE...

I know this isn't technically Desire related but it is rooting related and i thought it would be of interest to some here. Sony Ericsson are now allowing people to unlock their boot loaders on the new Xperia range... Now i don't really like SE but that's a bold move from them. I'm still not about to rush out and buy a SE any time soon, but i really hope that HTC take a leaf out of SE books here.

Sony Ericsson's Android bootloader unlocking site goes live, modders rejoice -- Engadget

HTC seem to be going the other way. Motorola and now SE are unlocking. I think this is a big mistake by HTC.

The new experia arc looks ok.

I agree, it is a mistake on HTC's part. When you think about it, the manufacturer doesn't lose anything by letting you do this, they don't receive anything from the sale of apps (as far as i'm aware anyway)

I haven't had a chance to get my hands on the Arc yet, but i have used the Play. I was impressed with the game play on the Play (original crash bandicoot on a phone is pure win) but the actual phone functionality and that god awful timescape UI still sucks a$$ compared with even the old Sense let alone 3.0

I've only handled a dummy Arc, but the form-factor felt nice: bigger screen without making the phone huge. And it's had some good reviews. If I were buying now it would be a contender, and this move makes it more attractive.

Don't really understand HTC working at locking the bootloaders harder. For people for whom Sense is a selling point, it's a selling point. For those for whom it isn't, why work at making the phone less attractive? I have to assume that it's to keep the networks happy, but if the goldcard trick works you can remove the crapware without rooting anyway (SE are only offering the bootloader unlock on unbranded phones anyway, presumably for this reason). But maybe by the time I'm next buying they'll have seen the error of their ways...

I couldn't agree more Hadron (about sense and HTC locking down the bootloaders) Like i said in my post above, i can't see any detrimental effect to HTC on letting us run custom ROM's? And they are really just contradicting the main purpose of Android being open source by locking following in the foot steps of Apple.

I never thought i'd hear myself say this but i actually want to see HTC follow SE and Motorola on this one

Its funny because I think Motorola and SE are following from HTC'e early policy of barely caring. Now everyone has swapped sides.

Thing is for me, the bigger development community surrounding a handset would easily sway me in a handset decision, if I couldnt otherwise choose.

Ultimately, if a handset looks fugly I won't buy it - no matter if it's fully unlocked or otherwise. Only reason I root is to get more space, now HTC handsets come with 1GB+ I'll have no reason to

Ugly is straight out of the window. No quarrals.

I wpuld root for undervolting though. Custom rom. Anything else that I think takes my fancy.

I've had good experience with both motorola and SE dumbphones - in moto's case the software was basic, but the hardware was solid and worked well. So I've nothing against either brand. Though like Dan, I felt that the original xperia was behind the curve by the time it arrived, but the Arc seems more competitive.

When the time comes for me it will be a mix of what hardware is available and the level of community support/interest in a particular handset. At the moment though it's just casual interest in the trends for me.

I think it would take something pretty special to move me from HTC especially now i've seen the Sensation. I'm not interested in the Galaxy S 2, reason being i hate the software and the plastic-y feel off all samsung phones. The LG Optimus 2X isn't quite there yet either and SE for me is killed by the UI (i know i could technically use a custom ROM) but just generally the specs don't excite me at all either.

Motorola i think will do well, but IMO they haven't quite got it right in the UK yet, i loved the idea of the Droid in the US but by the time it made it to the UK and was renamed etc. the Desire had already won me over.

The sensation is the first phone that's actually got me intrigued/interested enough to consider swapping my Desire before my contract ends. Although, as you'd expect it is going to be expensive :( Its either that or wait 5/6 months till my contract ends....

HTC is making a huge mistake Im so dissapointed with them. Rooting was the best thing Ive done so my next phone will depends on its rooting abilities and huge development community behind it. SE and Motorola have made a good decision regarding bootloaders but for various reasons Im still not keen on them. I dont like either of them so come on HTC dont lock the bootloader!!!

I had a v600, and the hardware really was solid.

My SE W880i kept turning itself off which was very annoying.

I still have both phones. The w880i is in my man-drawer. The V600 is stopping my broken headboard hitting my bedroom wall ;)

I have an old Motorola L7089, the first Tri-Band handset (with manual switching between North American and Rest of World bands!), in my drawer. Still works. My kids know that if they lose/break their phones they get to carry that. Given that the phone is almost as old as my daughter this is a great incentive to look after their kit ;)

2 weeks ago I've played with SE Arc and I was impressed with it. The design, good materials, light weight, high-contrast Reality screen, performance - these are all cool and I would get it if a large developer community was behind it.

A few days ago, I've also tried the Xperia Play and was... not impressed with it. It is advertised as a gaming phone but some games are lagging and the battery can't last a full day for a gaming fan.

I guess we will know more by summer if HTC is going the "Locking" way, or SE continues its "open" policy. There is also Samsung, that seems (kind of) OK.

The problem with samsung is I have the same quality plastics in my toilet freshener.... And that is supposed to be disposable.

With your foreign currency and keys to places you don't know? ;)

I have an entire mortis lock either in it or near by.... :)

Few other phones, batteries, random things...

Not foreign currency though. That goes in the "Foreign currency dish"

But yeah, everything Michael McIntyre says about the man drawer, in my case, is about true.

Just had a peek at the Arc Android Development forum at XDA, and it's pretty quiet. But it's also a new handset, so we'll have to see how that develops. I'd be surprised if the officially unlockable bootloader doesn't prompt some interest.

I giggled when I watched that because it's so true.
Every man has a "Man drawer" :D

Perhaps companies are realizing that devices with good development and rom support sells more, the Desire and Nexus One are still high in demand here in Canada. LG's new devices seem to be fairly easy to root and unlock as well, so I'm keeping an eye out for new LG devices although I still like HTC too.

I'm not touching SE, the specs on that Xperia Play and Arc looks awful compared to other devices being released.

LOL. Motorola has asked in Androinica FB page what new apps users want from devs. Here is the answer... :D
