Help Internal Memory

camplejo

Newbie
I'm sure this is discussed a lot, but the one complaint I have with this phone is that I'm constantly battling with no free internal memory to store apps. APP2SD says I have 178.88MB total internal memory and Available is 18.46MB, so there is supposedly 160.42 used. Looking at the apps on the phone, it lists 28. Top users are:

Maps: 11.23 MB
Facebook: 6.44 MB
Google Reader: 5.78 MB
Gmail: 4.94 MB
WeatherBug: 4.49 MB
Market: 3.69 MB
TuneIn Radio Pro: 2.86 MB
Appstore (amazon): 2.67 MB
Lookout: 2.64 MB
Fox News: 2.18 MB
YouTube: 1.29 MB
and rest add up to 10.118 MB

Total: 58.328 MB

So where is the other 102 MB? Is the Android system taking the rest?

Chris

I can regain a LOT of space deleting data. NY Times is terrible about that, Shazam, some others.

Home, menu, settings, applications, manage applications, sort by size then check out each one and clear data if appropriate.

Root the phone. Create an ext2 partition on your sd card. Install Link2SD application. Then you can move any "phone only" app and even non essential system apps and Dalvik caches to the SD card. I also use Titanium Backup to delete unneeded Dalvik cache files. I have over 100 apps installed on Optimus V and still have plenty of space.

Contrary to popular belief, rooting id not a universal answer.

U don't have other browsers (ie. Dolphin or Opera Mobile) installed in your phone? Cache from browsers can take up quite a bit of mb. I free up about 30mb clearing caches from stock browser, Dolphin and Opera Mobile.

Dolphin browser lets you set it up so you can have it put your cache on SD card. The others may as well.

I'm not sure what you have installed on your phone to run out of space that easily. I didn't get that low on my phone until I downloaded about 50+ apps onto the phone.

Have you been moving all the unnecessary apps (non system, non-widgets) and etc to the memory card? If moving everything that can be moved and clearing out your cache isn't helping, then I strongly suggest you take crimsontime's advice and root the phone.

I did my friend's intercept last week, she went from getting low space warnings everyday to having over 50+ MB of space on her phone. All I did (at that point) was root, enable MOVE2SSD (root program that lets you move practically everything to the SD card) backed up and removed bloatware with Titanium (free, I recommend paid if you can) and she gained a lot of space and that's before I did the custom kernel and converting filesystems to EXT4 which made the phone fly.

Basically I'm trying to say, if the standard things aren't working for you, bite the bullet, root (just for the basics) and you'll see how big of a difference it can make for you without you making any drastic changes.

P.S. I did all that stuff on her phone before I even bought a smartphone so I had no actual experience with Android. THat should tell you how easy it is as long as you follow directions.

Doesn't work on mine, even if I select 'Move cache to SD' on Dolphin HD. On Opera Mobile, cache has to be cleared from Opera Mobile's Settings.

If your phone is rooted, perhaps it works differently.

I agree. But... rooting is about the only thing that is going to get more internal memory for Apps on this phone. You can continually fight with deleting data, trying to nudge .apk files to the SD card, etc. or you can root it and use Link2SD to gain around 80 MB more space for apps.

already been mentioned but just root it and use link2sd... currently i have over 125 apps installed and never get the annoying storage low message.... plus rooting ur phone allowes u to do everything u can ever think of... if ur not gonna root the phone then might as well just not buy an android... last sentence is there to make the point more dramatic... but seriously rooting will aid in a lot of things... and having almost unlimited number of apps through link2sd is one of the best features...

Better yet, if you root you can move Dalvik cache to cache, or use a ROM that does this for you, and free up a ton of space. No need for SD Card hassles.

I have everything installed to memory and still have 130MB free.

Mvdalvik, this gives you 175megs of storage space (about 40 more than previously)

I'm unrooted, and use Superbox (multiple tools in one app) and it has a "Cache" tool where it lists cache for each app, and allows you to clear each or Clear all. Short of adding a utility like Superbox, you'd have to go into Settings --> Manage Applications --> Running Applications tab, and go through each app and clear cache individually.

Maybe powering off your phone also removes all cache, I don't know, worth a try to see if you have a lot of accumulated cache.

Gmail: 4.94 MB
This make me think you have a lot of accumulated cache and/or data, because mine currently shows 1.57 MB total (App = 888 KB, Data = 716 KB, Cache = 0)

Google Reader: 5.78 MB

May also be cache. But have you tried bookmarking Google Reader in your browser? You might find it acceptable, if you are still at a loss for space.

Fox News: 2.18 MB

This produces a lot of bad data, and thus is a big waste of memory. Oh wait, you meant phone memory?

It's not possible to get rid of pre-installed apps without rooting, correct? Dunno how much space that would save, but personally, I don't use most of them & I don't need 3 different mapping/location thingies.

I have an app called 1 Tap Cleaner Free that will clear the cache, but I still have to go to Applications page to clear data from some programs. Opera Mobile is bad for retaining data, which I figured out yesterday after yet another "out of space" message.

When my phone is out of warranty, I plan to root it.

Rooting isn't the solution, Link2SD is which requires rooting and btw, that actually works very well :) with the latest Link2SD I can not only put the app on the sd card but the cache and app-specific libraries as well so each app, nomatter what apps takes up no space on my internal memory. MUCH better than using android to move the apps to SD card, I have roughly 200+ apps and still 100MB left of space :)

Doesn't rooting also allow you to re-capture about 20MB by deleting crapware installed by VM? (I'm waiting for the expected Gingerbread push before rooting.)

Linking that many apps has it's draw backs,i had about 160,and found a lot of times the shortcuts would disappear, and they would crash, now only running about 100, more stable but not perfect.

Thanks for the tips. Not looking to root just yet. I like the suggestion of rooting once the warranty is up.

Most of my cache is clear. Some of the apps have decent amount of data but that is all part of the total size reported.

Don't have other browsers.
Still baffled by what is using 102Meg. It isn't cache or data because that is accounted for in the 58Mb of my apps.

You can force apps to SD without rooting. Just go to google and type in Force Android Apps to SD. You need to install the android SDK and mess around with some command line code but its fairly easy enough.
