Help Internal Space

I searched previous posts and didn't find exactly what I was looking for...

My phone keeps running out of space. It's annoying. Things won't install, the notification won't stop popping up. I have to uninstall things just to update apps, or pick and choose what can go or stay. I move everything that can be moved to SD as soon as it is installed. I clean my history/apps cache often. After reading some other posts, I cleared my SMS and the cache for a few apps, but nothing significant happened. It seems like every time I uninstall bunch of apps to make more room, the wiggle room decreases. Right now, it is at about 43 MB avail.

Is there a way I can change the default limit? Or some other setting I'm overlooking?

I'm not rooted, BTW.

*I didn't have a low storage issue until the last update. I did a factory reset after that, however, and installed all apps from scratch.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated! Thanks guys.

Don't look at just cache, but overall storage for a program. You can see this under "storage usage" in Applications.

Some apps start out with a small footprint but balloon in size. The HTC Facebook and plain Facebook (not sure why there's two) apps both consume a lot of data. Google Music will have an enormous footprint if you have uploaded a large music library. I had to uninstall it off my phone. Twitter also grew to almost 20mb and i had to delete all data - i think it grew out of linking contacts, so I dont do that anymore.

The storage limit is a huge deficiency for these phones. And for some reason few apps (even googles) take advangtage of the apps 2 sd ability, which was intended to fix the issue...

I haven't seen this thread... I have never had the low memory warning pop off, but I do have to be careful with the amount of apps I keep around. I have to agree with Traviswf. I think it is the only shortcoming of the Shift. (other than the update) Apps2sd only works with certain apps, and never with apps that run widgets, which totally sucks.

If only they could have given us an extra gig internal....

Yeah, it's kind of depressing to have to be so very careful with our internal storage. It seems hardly anything that doesn't use App2SD I delete immediately. I have about 100mb left internal, and 4gb left on the sd card.

This is a great thread.
I thought the phone ran on the "advertised" 2GB of internal memory to store apps but it seems like its basing it off of the RAM of 512MBs, since I only have about 75MBs free.
I am looking to move to the NexusS but it also has 512MB of RAM and 16GB internal.
Will the Nexus lead to the same issues?

Yeah it probably will if you are using up the memory in the Shift... Have you moved all you can to the sd card?

Yup I installed App2SD and moved what could be moved, and I regularly clear cached data.
of course the bulk of the 200MBs in use are from update to 2.3.
I like the Shift but at this point it reminds me of why I left BB due to the freezing and in this case the constant HTC Boot/loading screen when I run between Apps.

Thanks for the help though.

Reef, I know it doesn't help you at the moment but the shift is a great little phone. Don't be discouraged. I am sure that when they put out an update for the update (or permanent root becomes an option) you will see a different side to this phone. I have not had the loading issue for a LONG time with the custom 2.3 rom I am running. I know for a fact it is fixable. -Hang in there... These phones are so much better than Blackberries...

Thanks for the advice, I figured out HTC boot screen of death was being caused by Sense. Once I installed launcher pro it resolved that part of my gripe.
Hopefully root for GB comes soon.
Thanks again.

Try downloading a file manager. That worked for me. I currently use Dual File Manager XT for example. Please be aware that even though you save apps to your SD card they may still use some of your internal storage space. And say you have downloaded apps, used them for awhile or deleted them their files can still be on your SD card using up space. Every website you've been to or music, pic/video that you downloaded and thought you deleted can still be on there taking up space as well. Even though you think you are deleting things, clearing cache, etc.. Files can still be hidden without knowing. With a file manager you can find some data files on your SD card & on the phone internally. Try it out. Hope it works for you!!

The HTC Evo Shift would be my dream phone, if not for this memory issue. I've been dealing with it since the gingerbread update, and did all the things recommended in all the forums. It doesn't make any difference. I now do a hard reset every month, and I'll have over 200mb available after installing the apps, etc, but it just continues to go down for no discernable reason. Extremely frustrating.
