Here you go Riche101.

A few "weasel words" before you rush off and install it. I have not tried it yet myself and would be trying it on a Note 3 (my hobbit tablet) not a SGS4 once I can do a Nandroid. So I have no idea if it works or causes problems. Use at your own risk. It has been AVG virus scanned by me though. :

I'll not bother with a Nandroid at lunchtime and try and install it then. I'd like a black Gmail as well. The white one looks awful.

.. Am sure there will be a way or mod soon, I hope team blackout looked promising.

Maybe if i do an uber slim rom next time and add all gapps myself

have you tried backing up the original gmail app

ie: in system/app change gmail.apk to gmail.bak

copy over the new (blacked out) gmail.apk and set permissions to rw-r-r then reboot phone

surely this would now become the default gmail app

every system apk ive ever changed has worked this way

By phandroid, I assume you mean the Android Forums App
This already has a "dark mode" option

Thanks iT0mm0, worked like a charm. Used this black Gmail. apk just as you suggested. I've uploaded this one that works on my Note 3 (The hobbit tablet) (SM-N9005)
