International contacts

I have many friends and family members who live outside the US/Canada...the stock Contacts data fields are ok for this, but the phone number fields are horrible...very US-centric.

So, questions:

1) is there any way to modify the phone number fields to accept more of a free-form input (that will still work with dialing)?; and/or

2) are there any other contact apps out there that can be integrated as well as the stock contacts app, but that has this type of functionality?

Thanks!

I have a couple friends in Brazil, I entered their numbers in my Google account and they transferred to my phone just fine. They look like this +55 (22) ########. I don't think that Google formats it for you automatically, but it keeps the format you put it in.

Just use the + key, it works fine for me. The annoying thing though is the postal addresses in the contacts have state and zip and no country field, and that's annoying for international contacts.

Store all your numbers in the global (+countrycodenumber) format. Regardless of how the phone formats it, it should still work. In addition, if you are using your phone in another country, it should still work. Without you needing to know the international dial-out code for the country you are calling from.

Thanks, all! I didn't see the little button for things like +()- which has helped a lot. As does the suggestion to use the +Country Code format. :)
