[International / GSM] Fastboot Setup Question?

nazz

Newbie
Hi all,

I have installed the SDK package and USB drivers needed to unlock the bootloader and proceed with root. And believe the adb and fastboot files are all in place.

So I tested for adb...plugged in my GNEX to my PC in debugging mode, typed the following into the command prompt:

adb devices (and my device appeared, all good)

Then I tested for fastboot by typing the following into the command prompt, while my GNEX was still in USB debugging mode connected to PC:

fastboot devices (and nothing appeared?)

[QUESTIONS]

Does the phone need to be in Fastboot Mode (hold volume up & down, while powering up device) before I connect it to the PC and then use the "fastboot devices" command and then it will appear?

If I do put the phone in Fastboot Mode for this test and I am not ready to unlock the bootloader just yet, How do I get out of Fastboot Mode?

Thanks in advance!

yes it needs to be in fastboot mode to use fastboot commands

to get out of it just volume down till you see a reboot option and then hit the power button.

Thanks! So if the adb and fastboot device commands both work, then I should be good to go to unlock the bootloader? Right?

From what I researched, unlocking the boot loader takes about 5 minutes to reformat everything. I'm probably being a little overly cautious but I'm thinking it's gonna be a stressful 5 minutes!!! Did you have to unplug the phone from the USB while it was reformatting? Or did you leave everything as is until it finished on its own? I've seen in a couple bootloader unlock tutorials that people unplugged from USB, just wondering if this is common to do? Again anticipating another stress full "do I unplug it moment" LOL (And I do get that a Battery Pull is not an option)

Thanks again!

Android noob here. Got my first Android on 12/15/11 (GNex) and I just unlocked my on Saturday.

Once started, I took a walk down the street and around the corner for some coffee. By the time I came back (about 20 mins) it was done. I am pretty sure, being new to this scene, that I maay have freaked a little waiting and time would have slowed down and it would have seemed like it was taking forever, which might have lead me to do something dumb. So I just removed myself from the equation while it did its thing. When I came back, it was ready to go. My advice would be to be patient and if you have trouble being patient or letting the device boot for a while, just go for a walk or go in another room for a little while.

Good luck!

I left mine plugged in until it got to the boot animation then I unplugged it, but it did take another 5 minutes or so to finish booting.
