[International / GSM] Lost ALL data when unlocking/rooting

I'm sure other have noticed, maybe not...maybe it was just my phone, but I doubt it....however, when I unlocked the bootloader and rooted my phone I lost ALL data on the phone. All pictures, all music, everything. Not just apps and app settings. I didn't expect that. I expected loss of settings and apps and such, but not pictures and music. Might want to put a warning in the how to root section about that so people fully understand that it wipes EVERYTHING. Guess it's due to all storage on the phone being lumped together instead of having an SD card.

I was under the impression that the unlock command would factory reset but it shouldn't touch the /sdcard area on the memory from what I have read.

I hope you didn't lose too much that hasn't been backed up or can't be recovered

Unfortunately, you are correct. You'll lose everything in the SD card section, unlike other phones, even ones that have built in storage. This is due to how Google decided not to have a true partition for the SD card, but rather a dyanamic partition.

One of the reasons we try to stress to unlock and root you phone ASAP. Hope you had a backup and didn't lose too much.

Yup, unlocking the bootloader will wipe everything. It's usually advisable to unlock before setting up or root then make a Nandroid.

Yes, it was mentioned in all of the tutorials that unlocking the bootloader would wipe the phone.
However, I recently read that just doing factory reset would not wipe the "sd card".

Anyone care to test it?

Err, it says right in the tutorial that it will wipe everything, including the SD card.

Sorry it took ya' by surprise, but reading is fundamental ;)

I read the tutorial but when it said it would wipe, I just thought it would wipe just like every other time I've rooted phones. Not a big deal. Didn't lose anything because it was all backed up anyway. Just suggesting it needs to be more clearly stated for others that it will wipe pics, music, etc.

From the tutorial:

next, you'll unlock the bootloader

*** Warning *** the next command (fastboot oem unlock) will completely wipe your device (including your the internal "SD card"), so backup what you need / want to beforehand

The following is stated in the [How TO] Root guide under the unlocking the bootloader section, right before you are going to enter the commands to unlock your bootloader.

*** Warning *** the next command (fastboot oem unlock) will completely wipe your device (including your the internal "SD card"), so backup what you need / want to beforehand

While it is clearly stated, I will check with Scary to see if we can make it more obvious so this doesn't happen to others.

Thanks for the feedback.
