Root [International] Help, I think I've really gone wrong...

Ok - I'm not a 'noob' to all this, but you might as well treat me like one. I'm certainly not a techie so I need things explained in layman's terms. I've spent all last night and today on this, and I'm close to losing my mind.

So, decided to root and try some new ROMs. All was looking great (I had flashed Paranoid Android), until...

[I got the Paranoid Android link from a website - and I really wish I'd gone through a proper forum link, cos I'm worried that it's unstable because I may have dled a ROM that isn't really for my specific phone...maybe that's got nothing to do with it)

I started trying to reinstall some apps/data through TiB and a few issues started coming up where it kept asking me if I wanted to update the apps that I was restoring. Strange.

Then things started crashing in PA, wasn't really sure what I was doing wrong, and why it was going awry. Couldn't seem to get TiB to get all my apps/system data/etc back, so I thought - for the meantime, I'll just restore my nandroid.

However, I had moved my nandroid to my PC. Tried to copy it back, but it wouldn't work. Kept not managing to copy the biggest file back to the PC. I finally manged to get the file over to internal memory, and I then used a nandroid app from the market to point to this new directory and use that to flash. And it seemed to be working, yet, I think it came up to a "MD5 mismatch" error - although it's hard to see, because it's gone so fast.

I then found a thread on XDA whereby you had to type in this set of commands to sort out the md5 thread, I tried that, but it still hasn't worked. I really don't know where I've gone wrong (except for moving that nandroid!) - and at the moment, I've got PA and it's sort of working but I'm scared to do anything major (or even minor) because I'm worried that all the crashes will start to happen again...

I'm happy to either be recommended to a more stable ROM to flash (if we think that'll work) or how I can get my nandroid back up working and head back to stock but with a rooted phone. I'm beginning to wish I never did it....I have a terrible day....

Please.....

Did you (or the pc) rename the nandroid?
Dont worry you have plenty options. If you really want PA then go to their site(?) Or xda page and download it with your pc then move it to sd card and flash it from there. What gapps did you use?

Im going out for the night but hopefully someone else will catch this. The nandroid should be a folder (not a zip) with no spaces in it and placed in a folder named "clockworkmod"

Thanks - yes, I've seen a lot of the xda thread about naming convention.

I didn't rename it, AFAIK, I just moved the entire contents of the backup folder to my PC, and then I tried to shift it back. Which I finally managed to do using an internal memory folder (which I did create myself - so I did 'name' the filepath) and a Nandroid Manager app.

I have got PA working, I think - do you think I ought to reflash it from their website then?

If I can't get back to my old nandroid, the least I want to do is find a stable platform, and then "nandy it"...

When you say you restored from tibu did you restore system data as this is usually a no go.

If it's working (just) then I'd download a fresh copy from somewhere and wipe the shit out of your phone then flash. You could probably flash a clean firmware aswell and go back to stock.

Oh, maybe I did restore system data too - I haven't done so this time, I've just tried to be selective, and so far it's working ok, I think. Hmmm, this might be why I was seeing so many issues ? Could that explain several crashes, and the like?

Although TiBu is suffering a bit, but I think that's because my internal memory is shot - I need to see where I am using up all the 32gb!

How would I find a clean firmware - there are so many different varieties, it's always hard to know which to choose.

Can you link to the site where you got the Paranoid Android DL from?

As far as the crashes within the ROM, it does sound like the system apps got installed too. This causes lots of Force Closes and crashes until they are removed from the phone.

Yeah that's definitely for the International S3, so you've got no worries there.

What's the situation now? Are you still on PA?

Even if you don't have a nandroid, you'll still have your TiBu on your internal memory, so one thing you can do is just to reflash the ROM again, and only restore user apps from TB and see what happens. The other thing is to flash a different ROM altogether. Are you specifically looking for an AOSP ROM? I haven't used it but Carbon ROM seems to be a favourite round here, I'm sure they'll be a few people here that can vouch for it.

It is rather bizarre that the nandroid won't work  moving it from your phone to computer shouldn't usually cause a problem (I've done it loads of times) and as you've said above you didn't rename it. Strange

Still on PA, and managing to get most of my apps back and sorted - doing this piecemeal so that I can see if/when I get any FCs, etc. Seems quite stable for now and the speed is good (which was one of my reasons for flashing in the first place).

I have quite a major issue with internal memory that I need to work through, I don't recall (didn't notice) having this issue previously. I definitely performed a complete wipe before I flashed, but I've gone through so many iterations of wiping and TiBU that I probably have loads of stuff on my internal memory that I don't really need anymore. I have the 32GB version, and I have 20 odd GB sitting in the misc category when I looked at them in settings...!! I need to sort that out before I can run another Nandroid backup. I just wonder if the first one was somehow corrupted.

Still, it does look like I have a working phone that is stable, thankfully. Let's see what tomorrow brings.

Thanks All.

Try the app 'Disk Usage' from the play store, it's helped me many a time when I've been running out of space and need to see where everything is.

Glad to hear the ROM is more stable now :)

uploadfromtaptalk1383579635563.jpgYatesy mate, both these folders have identical contents.
Which should i wipe?
EDIT i deleted a file from one and it vanished from the other lol. Man this crap is too confusing :(

Yeah, funky, I noticed that it looks like several views of the same folder show up in the folder hierarchy.... Weird...

Yup. like i know i should have more memory than android says i have but its so messy.
Think im gona back up my titanium and do a full format

There are so many folder size/explorer type apps, but the best one, IMO, is the one mentioned earlier in this post - by CDPlant - 'disk usage'. Out of all the ones I've seen, this is by far the best and most useful one.

I feel like we're not quite done here - so I want to put some closure on this post.

I have been using PA3.99 for a couple of days now and all seems fine (bar one thing) - so I decided to do a nandroid back up (again)...

I again (perhaps foolishly) moved my nandroid back up off my SD card onto my laptop (strict cut and paste, careful to maintain folder hierarchy so I can put it back later).

I've then tried to use the "multiple user" element of the ROM, and that seems a little bit funky. I set up a restricted profile and then I can't get back to my own - it's like I've not downloaded any apps, etc - so the last time this happened, a couple of reboots, got me back, but this time - no such fortune. So I thought, 'time to check my nandroid then, that'll be a useful step'. And now, it's merrily restoring as we speak - once I put it back on the SD card.

I think one could say "happy days" esp considering how I felt through Sunday...thanks to all.

EDIT: spoke too soon ... dammit - error restoring data. "Damn you Android Gods".

What recovery are you using at the moment? Is it ClockworkMod (or a variation) or something like TWRP?

It was clockworkmod, but after a wee bit of googling about 'data not restored', I flash the touch version, tried the restore again, and it worked. First of all it said files not found, but when I went to restore from external sd card, it worked fine.

So NOW I can give closure.

Sort of. (hahaha) a handful of apps (literally, maybe only 7, seemingly unrelatd) seem to not be updating properly, so the beat goes on....

EDIT: simple reboot seemed to fix that issue - so "yay"

Yeah i have disk usage but im too stupid to make it useful to me lol. Gettin close to just doin a full format to get rid of all the crap. Im down to 3gb storage so im gona have to at some point. Phone is still flying though :)

Yeah the PA multi user failed miserably on me. I set up a second profile once basically hiding root access so I could use Sky Go but couldn't get back to my original profile.

Think I had to nandroid back there :p

Ah Yatezy - it's so good to know that you had the same problem as me - that's exactly what happened.

I'm sure it's cos I'm (effectively) a noob but when things like that happen, I begin to panic a touch, and I just feel like I shouldn't have even tried to change anything. I felt sht on Sunday, really I did.

But then, you guys, are just so damn bloody helpful - simply because you want to be, and it's so good to have such helpful people to turn to and make you feel like you're not the only one experiencing these issues - and more importantly, by no means are you on your own to deal with them

Ultimately my phone is better, faster, and more feature-packed - so we do need to keep pushing our (own and collective) boundaries to move forward.

Thanks, once again, all.
