Root [International] help restoring efs please!

DerpFace

Newbie
Hey guys I recently installed ultimarom v14 shiva. This ROM comes with a new modem that changes the format of your efs file (xxemg4). I have installed this new modem but have had nothing but problems so far, I find that my phone signal is so weak its almost non existent. With the installation guide it says to back up your efs (which I have done, plus I run siyah kernal which I believe back up efs automatically)

What I would like to know is how do I restore my efs from backup? I have used ktool and siyah to backup. Do I need to remove my ROM before I restore. I have efs.img and efs.tar.gz.

If someone can plz shed some light on this for me it would be very much appreciated!

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!
Paul

Hi, if you used Ktool then use it again to restore (point Ktool to the efs.img file and follow the instructions - make sure to do a nandroid backup first though). If Ktool fails then you can use this method, which I have successfully used and it is really simple - get it from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1901098 - it runs on Windows PCs and the download package has everything needed, just connect your phone via USB to your PC.

Follow the simple instructions (adb is already included in the package so no need to install adb; you simply execute the restore_efs .bat file and the script will execute the restore. That's it.

I'm not sure if restoring your EFS will make much difference to your signal. It is usually for keeping your IMEI number. Changing your modem would not likely make a difference to your signal.

Edit: just want to clarify that I'm not 100% sure that this is the case, but it may be easier to change a modem than restoring your efs.

Really? Ok, thanks for that. I just seems funny that since changing modems my signal has dropped. I knew that the modem is responsible for g/3g connection, so assumed it might be connected to my phone signal problem (being a nub).

Is there any common problem connected to signal drop or do you think is is just a fault on o2's side?

Oh wait, I've totally written the wrong thing :o haha sorry! I meant to say that changing your modem would make a bigger difference to your signal than restoring your efs.

I'm not having a smart day today :p

^ lmao.. when i read your post i must have read what you meant to say!
Yeah its the modem thats likely to have ruined the signal. Thats the firmware that controls the radio :)
EFS is to do with the IMEI. if you lose that youll know all about it

I think what the OP is referring to is that if anything does happen to the efs partition then you won't have any signal and no data, your phone is practically reduced to being a mini pc. This happened to me not so long ago - I lost my IMEI! Then I used the above method and was back in business. Luckily I had an efs.img backup from one of my many ROM flashes and since then I always make sure there is a backup of the efs hanging around somewhere for each of my phones.

Hey,

I'm gonna have to apologise again, because I have been more silly than usual, and have just understood exactly what you mean here.

I was just reading this -
Before installing v14.0 you should all do a little something to safeguard your IMEI number for now and forever.

Why?

Because the XXEMG4 modem changes the format of your EFS folder in such a way that once you are on the XXEMG4 modem, you cannot use an earlier modem.

Do I have to install the XXEMG4 modem?

No, you an still use an older modem. Though, there are scattered reports of this being hassle.

Can I use the EFS backup to use an older modem after installing XXEMG4?

Yes, that

Yeah definitely :) if you haven't already, stick them in your dropbox as copies too :)

Funky, what modem do you have at the moment? Just curious :)
