Root [International] Omni vs Cyanogenmod

I thought it would be useful to discuss the differences between the two AOSP rom bases.

On XDA forums the creator of Archidroid rom, JustArchi as declared that he is changing from the CM base to the Omni base because CM has no dedicated maintainers for the S3 and that one of the main devs from Cyanogen mod is now working on Omni as a maintainer, and that Omni is an independent AOSP built with the same positive spirit of enthusiastic development that Cyanogenmod originally embodied before it became a company.

Justarchi believes Omni is the best option for the future and is considering his CM builds as 'end of line', and will exclusively use Omni from now on.

Now, although I am really enjoying Temasek's Unofficial CM builds, as he is incorporating Omni innovations into his rom on top of what he considers the best of CM, I'm wondering whether it wouldn't just be better to go with Omni.

Or is Temasek's plan to cherry pick from each base the best option.

I haven't tried any Onmi based roms yet, so does anyone have any comments about them and have they tried CM builds to compare them with?

i had an omni build downloaded but by time i got round to thinkin about flashing it, it would have been out of date.
I like the idea of getting away from CM. the punk in me doesnt like their ethics lol.
If you d/l an omni build could you dropbox it for me plz mate?

I've not tried CM so can't comment but been flashing the Omni nightlies since the 26th and so far it's been ultra smooth, fairly bugless and in the whole time I've used it I've only had 2 reboots. I used to have a reboot at least every other day on 4.2.2 and 4.3 ROMs.

It's still pretty bare but additions are slowly being added and if some of the Kangers get a hold of it as a base it could be an absolute beast!

From what I've read tho the other 4.4 ROMs have been smooth and stable so that could be down to the way 4.4 works. Either way 4.4 is shaping up to be a hell of an upgrade!

I haven't tried but Temasek seems to be focusing on cherry picking features from them whilst remaining on a CM base. However, we have to consider that Temasek is alone, how long will he be there to make CM a viable alternative? CM 10.2 had less feature than SlimROMs. I can't go back to bare CM anymore.

The team whose CM builds im using are pretty good man, they do (almost) nightly builds and are gradually adding features from other roms.
Theyve started doing Omni builds too.
Wish they would name themselves lol its just these 3dudes on G+ building only for the i9300. Hard workers and really open to bug reports
Im gona try and donate a few quid when i can

I've just tried Omni, but I'm back on Temasek 4.4. I was impressed by the smoothness but it doesn't have many features yet. Their update system integrated into the ROM is nice though.

Thats what i like about Slim. They have "slimcenter" that informs you of updates and stuff.
Did you benchmark Omni against CM based mate?
I know benchmarks can be stupid but theyre good for comparing roms or settings on your own phone

Just gave the omni update a shot and it's exactly like the original OTA way if updating! Pretty impressed by that tbh!

Just found out Chainfire and the Focal dev are the dudes behind Omni!
That makes me more interested man

Yeah that's why I'm keeping an I on it. I'll probably try it again when it will have more features. Hopefully not very long before then.

Also, I forgot to benchmark it lol

Brief update: I tried Omni again today combined with Gravity Box for added features. I'm really satisfied with it so far although WiFi tethering seems to be broken. Hopefully it's going to be fixed soon.

Isn't gravity box an Xposed module? Problem for me is that it's not compatible with ART yet. I haven't used it so what would it provide that is lacking from the roms so far?

Yeah it's an xposed dependant app. Well I'm using it to customise the notification quick toggles. But it offers all the basic of a custom ROM. Customise status bar, lockscreen, display etc. I usually used it on my Nexus 7 since I prefer stock rooted for it but now it's proving to be very useful for Omni.

Yeah gravitybox is meant to be excellent. I just cant give up ART lol. Does it have all the features Xblast has or do you use both mate?

Man thats cool. Especially since it took me 5 attempts to download the 160mb update to my rom today lol.
I remember the same kinda thing was introduced for app devs but dont think ive ever had an app update that used it.
Hope the rest of the rom devs take heed.
Ill be flashing omni tomorrow i think :)

So sad, today's Omni nightly broke partially the compatibility with Gravity Box. Some toggles are now completely blank and don't work.

Hope it gets fixes tomorrow 😢

Bummer man. Are you getting your roms straight from omni?
Does their OTA thing allow u to roll back to the last build?

Yeah I get them straight from Omni and then let it update through the OTA. I think it won't allow to roll back unless I do the whole flashing manually. I'll wait tomorrow's build and decide what to do. Hopefully it gets fixed ☺

I just flashed Omni but I don't have root for some reason. Titanium Backup won't work.

Downloaded SuperSU. It tried to install the binaries and failed. I rebooted and tried again twice but it won't install.

If I can't gain root I'll have to revert to CM11.

Apart from this problem, it does feel zippy.
