Root [International] Random restarts after root

Hi Kasser!

There should not be any problems with the Vodafone, NE8, UK firmware as regards rooting and flashing a custom recovery. Have you tried wiping the cache partition and dalvik cache in PhilZ recovery mode?

Thanks Ironass for your help - damn I didn't think of that! Such a noob.......I just wiped both and will keep an eye on this and report back.

Fingers crossed :)

Looks like that hasn't worked as it's just restarted again. Wondering if this is a hardware issue other than the battery perhaps? Is it worth performing a factory reset and starting from scratch again?

How tightly does your battery sit in the recess?
I've not heard this problem on the S4, but on the S2, some people had to put a piece of paper under the bottom edge of the battery to wedge it up to the metal connection more securely.

If its tight, then I suppose a factory reset would be a sensible thing to try

Hi Hawker - I bought the Anker replacement battery and it's a very tight fit; feels much more of a solid fit than even the OEM so I think i've exhausted everything except for a factory reset.

I plan to reset it tonight and see how it behaves. Then start the rooting process from scratch and observe once again. It could be something I did previously so here's hoping I can fix it, or it's S5 time!

If interesting enough will report back. Might be useful for someone one day!

Cheers guys I really appreciate the advice.

EDIT- Have added a screenshot of my battery - it looks nuts! Any clues to a solution here?? Let the battery run flat and recharge etc? At least one of those big leaps is from swapping out the battery - but the most recent restart was the same battery....

New theory - what would be the correct modem for my S4?

When my wifi stopped working last week I used a guide to flash a new one - I chose one matching the info on the 'About device' screen. However, since then the NE8 update arrived and I guess that would have overwritten anything I did - correct?

I think this could have buggered this up however - I know, i'm a fool.......

Oh dear!

It would appear that you have become, "Flash Happy". :ahhhhh:

This is a common complaint among flashers who, finding that things aren't working properly, come up with all sorts of wild hypothesis and start flashing anything they can lay their hands on in the hope that it will somehow fix it. We've all done it!

Do the following...

1. Factory Data Reset your phone and flash, via Odin, the stock Samsung firmware for Vodafone. You can use the instructions and video in #1.5 of 28 Galaxy S4 models - know yours? to guide you...

Model: GT-I9505
Model name: GALAXY S4 LTE
Country: United Kingdom (Vodafone)
Version: Android 4.4.2
Changelist: 1567293
Build date: Wed, 21 May 2014 12:47:18 +0000
Product Code: VOD
PDA: I9505XXUGNE8
CSC: I9505VFGGNE2
MODEM: I9505XXUGNE8

This will ensure that you have the NE8 modem. Check everything is hunky dory.

2. Root your phone, GT-i9505, and install a custm, PhilZ, recovery by carefully and thoroughly reading all the instructions in the Rooting Galaxy S4 - Dummies Guide. Do not skip anything.

3. Report back. ;)

Haha I have learned my lesson (well......kind of!).

Thanks for this - i'll get going now and report back :)

There are 2 ways to flash and mod your phone... "The right way and the wrong way!"

(The experienced modders and flashers on here have already tried the 2nd option, so that you don't have too) ;)

So I have flashed the stock firmware and happy to report the restarting appears to have stopped :)

I'm going to leave it unrooted until this evening just to be sure, then will root and hopefully all will be well - let's see......

Thanks for the help and yes, it will be the correct way from now on - guides and everything :)

Well, after not randomly restarting for 2 days unrooted, after 1hr of being rooted my phone restarted itself. I did not flash a recovery yet either, so it's supersu / busybox or something else that's causing the issue. Have noticed that the phone overheats a fair amount when it's about to restart too.

Looks like my S4 just doesn't like to be rooted!

I've unistalled supersu via it's menu option and restarted the phone. Hoping this will stop the restarts now, otherwise will wipe it and flash the stock firmware as before.

Thanks for all the advice - we tried!

EDIT: It's restarting again even though I no longer have root - will be flashing stock and avoiding root from now on!

im having the same problem so how did you over come ?

There is an incompatibility between CF Root and Knox 2.0. I am having the same issue. You must remove the Knox apks to get rid of the rebooting problem

I created an account here just to say THANK YOU! This solved my problem. I used Titanium Backup to backup and then get rid of all the Knox and Knox related apps.

I just have one more problem now: I want to install Busybox in order to get more benefits from my root access, but when I install it the rebooting problem comes back (though its much more rare and doesnt come with freezes as in the Knox problem).

Any ideas?
