Root [International] Rooting a UK S3

I am trying to root my S3 but am struggling to find a guide that tells me how to do it and keep my stock rom and also keep OTA updates working as they should.

Can anyone help me please?

Everything seems to be about american network specific phones.

from what ive learned in my rooting research you can keep the stock ROM but anytime you do an OTA update you would have to unroot first

I've heard that Odin is the way to do it. think it is easier than
htc desire.

SU. how is the Wanam rom? does it run
quicker than stock etc?

cheers

They're all much over muchness. Its light and updated well. Lighter ROMs as you know are alittle quicker but most of the speed increases come from Kernels.

ahh ok yes I did notice that you specified the kernel too.

is it worth doing then on s3?

cheers

Yeah definitely. I held off on jb for a while to ensure my favourite kernel was available. Still undervolting here

Imagine how much fun testing roms would have been on your desire if you had a kernel like siyah that gives you dual boot...

mmmm....dual boot...nice :-) assume that means you can boot
between different roms? how does that work with apps?
ie. do you have install them for both roms?

cheers

No idea, I've never bothered using the feature.. I assume there is /sdcard/ROMS(orwhatever)/system and /data?

There was an app that allowed you to dual boot the HD desire...I had it on mine...wasn't a true dual boot though, but it did allow you to run a second ROM over your daily driver without causing any issues.

If I get time I'll dig out the thread.

Here you go :)

The app is here, but there is no GS3 support yet. They do mention in the description that they have started work on it again so it might not be too long until it works

so the rom you use, is that based on sammy code then? i assume that all the custom roms were based on original android releases :/

Custom just means modified. They can be based on AOSP / AOKP /CM code, or from official Samsung releases / leaks / ports.

I always use Sammy based in the S3 because there are too many features to lose, especially with all the note 2 stuff coming our way via ports and official builds.

I'm using a 4.1.2 leak with multi screen...

hahah nah. AOSP doesn't cut it compare to Samsung ROMS for me.

Plus unlike dGB, there is no benefit really.

I seemed to have made the mistake of flashing CM10... its not very good :( It's so buggy, the screen keeps freeing in deep sleep and I keep having to do battery pulls. I've only had it since yesterday and it's happened several times  Plus as mentioned before, there are a lot of features lacking. I just wanted to try it out for a bit; think I'll stick with Samsung ROMs for now ;)

Unfortunately I now don't have any WiFi at home so it'll take forever to download a Samsung ROM again. Need to find a new one to pick as well

There's several out there ripe for the picking. My s3 is my only internet connection too. I just stick with wanam tbh

There's nothing to make me switch between one and another and its updated regularly enough for me

ah right i see - so Wanam is based on sammy code - i didnt realise that sammy also made their code available
ta

.....btw....WTF! what is going on with that screen shot?! :D
