Root [International] Stuck between root and unroot

Hi guys,

I have a pretty annoying issue that I can't seem to find any info on how to fix it. I am a complete novice when it comes to android devices and would really appreciate any help.

So when I got my S3 it was already rooted. I didn't really know the difference between unrooted and rooted at the time so I wasn't sure what it meant. Anyway, when the phone was telling me to update the software, I wasn't able. I eventually found out online this was because the phone was rooted. I looked up a quick way to unroot the phone and it told me to simply go into SuperSU and choose unroot. When I did this however, the unrooting failed. Now I still can't update the software and I'm not able to even access SuperSU as it says I don't have access. Every 3 hours it tells me to update the software but I can't so I have to keep telling it to postpone.

What I want is to restore the phone to a stock firmware and keep my service provider stuff. I don't care about files on the phone, I just want to be able to update to the newest Android OS and have my phone act normal again.

If anyone could help I would really really appreciate it. This issue doesn't make the phone unusable, it's just annoying :)

Thanks very much.

Hi I live in ireland so my carrier is Vodafone. I'm on pay-as-you-go. In fact, I wouldn't mind if the phone was completely wiped, as I could bring it into a Vodafone shop and get them to put the carrier code on the phone.

o.k..so just making sure, you have the GT-I9300 model of the S3?

Yep that's the one :)
o.k.:)
Then what we need to do is find the file needed to unroot and get you back to the unrooted state for the phone.

You said you wanted to unroot to accept the update and just stay unrooted correct?

That file will be installed via ODIN.
Give me some time to find it, as I am on a different carrier but perhaps someone else will see this and provide that for you:D

Thank you very much :) Will I be able to use Odin seeing as I failed unrooting the first time? I read online you needed to be rooted to use it. I really appreciate the help :)

You need not be rooted to use ODIN...I used it to root.
Then later, unroot and reroot.
I just want to make sure I am finding the correct files for you to use.
Don't want to point you in the wrong direction:)

Edit: so far, I believe I have found the stock firmware here:
http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/1/?model=GT-I9300&pcode=VOD#firmware

And the guide to unroot:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1710613

HOWEVER!!!!----I would like for someone to verify this...so what I am going to do is move your thread into the root forum for the International Version of the S3 o.k.?

Mike. Sorry for the late reply but I'm just trying to be extra sure. I'm pretty sure that its right. So I guess that's 3 of us but hopefully someone can fully confirm this. I'll go do some more looking though.

Update: I'm really quite sure that the files you provided are correct.

I should add that youll have to use the Triangle Away app to make the phone look like it hasnt been rooted if u wana use the guarantee.
Other than that, once its back to stock, unrooted, you should be able to get it up to date officialy using Samsung Kies on the pc or over the air in About Device

ya to unroot all u need to do is use triangle away(requires root) to reset the flash counter and then flash the stock firmware(downloaded from sammobile) via odin.

If you have a 4.1.2 bootloader, use triangle away but before android boots, pull the battery to interrupt the boot process. Then boot into download mode to flash.

Why? 4.1.2 bootloader sets flash counter to 1 at boot if you have custom stuff. Prevent the boot, prevent counter going up :)
