So I was just wandering what is the reason behind rooting your phone? Hope this isn't a stupid question.

Remove system apps I don't use, move app data to sdcard, backup applications, overclock/underclock, tweak performance/interface with numerous apps that require root.

As shocky said plus the ability to use custom Roms which allow you to change system settings such as the battery icons , pull down menu icons etc! And so we can play in the root forum ;-)

Yes

So long as you return the device to the default unrooted condition with stock rom and reset the counter if you need to, you can do whatever you want to the software and they will be none the wiser.
