Help International/UK data issues

yes its possible your carrier has roaming agreements in place with other carriers and your phone was doing its job by providing you cellular service.

so far i dont see anything wrong. you can go into your phone settings and restrict roaming on other carriers (at least on us htc one's).

if you are not clear on your roaming policy with other carriers, contact 3 and ask. :)

Signal & Coverage - Support - Three

Where exactly were you when this happened?

If you were in Birmingham (as an example) then you'd only be in range of other UK networks. In which case I didn't think 3 still had network sharing arrangements (and an actual sharing shouldn't appear as roaming), but I had read that they might have one during the 4G rollout so it could be related to something being tested. Would be best to check with 3 in this case.

However, if you were near say Holyhead or Dover you might have dropped off 3 coverage but picked up an overseas network (from Eire or France in the 2 examples I made up there). I can't remember the specs for 3G, but the maximum range for GSM (2G) is 35km from the basestation, so if you are on the coast at a point where the sea is narrow this can happen. In this case you'd have to argue that since you'd not left the country you had no reason to expect international roaming to occur, and see whether they would waive any charges.

Mobile data settings -> Access Point Names.

If you can't enter it there the problem may be related to O2 software. However, I've never bought a network-branded smartphone so don't know what's needed in this case.

all sorted cheers. the APN page was blank.. a quick search found loads of site giving you the details to enter into the fields... hey presto... 30 seconds later... back into the world of 3g... phew...

ps... even coming from a ONE X, the ONE is stunning..

why they changed the procedure for putting apps onto the home pages straight from the app drawer is strange tho.. why bother... it worked well..

and im sure the white plastic band round the edge is gonna discolour like cheap upvc windows over time... its a poor choice of material in otherwise a premium handset....

bar that... i cant get over how smooth and responsive it is....

i showed it to one of the lads at work.. straight away he goes.. is that the new HTC ONE... lets have a good look... the only other person there.. an ifan just refused to even acknowledge its existance... not even out of curiousity... their loss.....

Mine's black - so chips will show up more, but I don't have to worry about the plastic discolouring :)

TBH I stopped using the Sense launcher after about a week. I just ran it this morning to check what the clock widget options were (answering a question elsewhere in AF) and was reminded of how clumsy the widget adding is compared with an AOSP-like launcher such as Apex or Nova. But I guess once you have your page set up that's not a big problem. Seems odd though, given that it's otherwise rather usable - guess Peter Chou doesn't install many apps ;)

So... I have an O2 branded HTC ONE.
they have sent me the unlock code and I have put my Orange/EE SIM card in it.

Phone calls work fine but Mobile data doesn't.

I have found the below on EE website but they don't seem to work:

Find out how to manually setup internet on your HTC One, just follow these simple steps.
Finding the Settings

  • Open the Applications list
  • Tap on Settings
  • Tap on Mobile networks
  • Tap on Access point names
  • Tap the 3 dots at the top right of screen
  • Tap on new APN
  • Enter the following information

Data Settings

  • Name = MMS
  • APN = everywhere (case sensitive)
  • Proxy = Leave Blank
  • Port = Leave Blank
  • Username = eesecure
  • Password = secure
  • Server = Leave blank
  • MMSC = Leave blank
  • MMS proxy = 149.254.201.135
  • MMS port = 8080
  • MCC = 234
  • MNC = 33
  • Authentication type = PAP
  • APN type = mms
  • APN protocol = IPv4
  • Bearer = Unspecified
  • Tap the 3 dots at the bottom right of screen, then select Save.
I can't see where to choose the APN Protocol but everything else has been entered correctly.

any ideas?

That looks like the MMS APN. You'll also need an APN for mobile data.

It might be as simple as choosing APN type as Internet & MMS. Try that (if it's an option) and see whether it works.

Otherwise, just looking at mine what I can see for my second APN is:

Name: Internet
APN: everywhere
Proxy: Not set
Port: not set
Username: eesecure
Password: (doesn't show, but I think "secure" is the answer again)
Server: not set
MMSC: not set
MMS proxy: not set
MMS port: not set
MMS protocol: WAP 2.0 (I suspect there's nothing to set there either)
MCC: 234
MNC: 33
Authentication: PAP
APN type: default, hipri
APN enable/disable: enabled
Bearer: unspecified

I recently changed the SIM card (being in another country), and tried accessing the APN page on the Settings on my M7, to configure local 3G internet.

Now I cannot access the Settings menu on my phone - it opens for a split-second, then it goes back to the home page. I tried resetting the phone, and I can access the Settings option for just one time (enough to configure WiFi in a new location), but all subsequent attempts to enter Settings fail as above.

I tried all options I could think of to get into it, but to the same zero result. When I press double-Home to see active programs, Settings is among them, but its screenshot is a black one, instead of a preview of the settings.

Any help welcome.

obviously the SIM card is causing issues if you are leaving it in whilst trying this. remove it and put in the older sim card and see if the settings screen behaves the same way.

is this device rooted? what carrier?

have you had this device for a while or did you just purchase?

is it a refurb or a new device (did you buy it new)?

Of course, I did remove the DTAC Thai card I had inserted and replaced it with my old/initial Romanian Orange SIM. The problem still persists.

This is a phone I have had for 1.5 years, bought it brand-new, never locked on any network, and has never caused any problems (this or any other). It is not rooted, and the software is up-to-date (I always download new updates to the system, without any problems so far).

Could it have anything to do with some sort of script-sms that DTAC sent to my phone trying to configure the APN automatically? I did receive a text from DTAC saying that my device is not compatible with automated setting.

If so, how can I roll back from that?

i dont see how a script running could affect the settings tab though...

are you able to use the device on wifi? internet? can you do anything?

I can use it just fine otherwise. Calls, Internet, Skype, FB - all work perfectly.

I also cleaned the screen thoroughly to make sure the Back button would not auto-press itself - it does not, judging by how all other instances work.

But it will keep on reverting from the Settings tab all the time, which is annoying, esp if you want to turn on Bluetooth, and so on.

As mentioned, the funny thing is that the Settings tab will work and stay open when restarting the phone, for one operation only (i.e. inputting the password for a new WiFi network - which I do a lot of since I am hopping between places here in THailand). It will keep on disappearing on all further attempts.

Tough call. Could be a physical /screen issue. Factory reset should clear these little bugs. You may need a service call to a phone shop.
