Root [International] UK T-Mobile Full Monty

Hi all

I'm able to upgrade on Sunday, and I am intendening to get the SGS3 on T-Mobile (UK) on the Full Monty plan (2000 mins, unltd texts & data) however after a bit of research I have noticed they have stopped tethering for new customers. I am quite miffed about this as at the end of the month I was going to treat myself to a Nexus 7 too with the intention to tether where required.
Am I right in thinking there are no ways around this? Such as using 3rd party apps (such as FoxFi) or perhaps using a custom rom? I am asking as I was wondering if it's the carriers stock rom preventing me? Or rather something else with no work arounds? If this is the case, I'll simply go to Three where they do allow this. I'm just a little bit hesitant about leaving T-Mobile as I've had absolutely minimal trouble with them. :o

Thanks for the link, but it doesn't really shed any light on the use of 3rd party apps? Or if using a custom rom will re-enable this function? I guess I just can't get my head around how they are able to disable this function when there are apps dedicated to enable this and getting rid of the stock rom which may have it enbedded in there. :o
 
They basically remove the option in settings. At least that's what the US ones do. Other companies like O2 just say "don't do it".

Every other carrier, foxfi seems to work...as far as I can tell. Don't take my word as Gospel though
 
I guess it's not worth the hassle if T-Mobile throttle/limit my speeds or even cut off my 3g through my tethering.. But that means I'm going to have to wait another month as I'll have to wait for my current contract to expire!
Bummer to say I've been looking forward to this since the SGS3 was released.
 
Indeed although traffic from your s3 is traffic from your s3. They can't tell the difference between tethering or not
 
This is what I thought, how can they possibly differentiate between usual 3g traffic and tethering? So by them "not allowing it" is basically them not providing the ability to do so under their settings despite a good availability of 3rd party apps. How can they possibly enforce this?

Well I have heard stories about people on Three with unlimited data, but without tethering, receiving a blocked internet webpage returned when attempting to tether. And that is even using the sim in a mobile wireless dongle for the pc. So I don't know how they 'detect' it, but apparently they do.
 
In a dongle makes sense as it would probably alter the apn since this is not encoded on the sim.

If an app uses a different apn the that too would make sense.

If its all going through one apn, the traffic is not being differentiated, so that doesn't make sense.

Easy test, get a t-mobile payg sim and test it.

O2 said no tethering yet it worked fine for me and no repercussions
 
Unlimited tethering not that I use it. Never had to call customer services. Wish signal ws better where I live and work though.

No issues tbh
 
Strong enough to stream youtube vids and load heavy sites in a reasonable time? The 3g coverage map shows my area should be pretty good but all the feedback I've heard is that the signal was consistently poor. I thought as it's been a few years and this may have improved.
 
i think its the same with all carriers.
3g cells sites are over saturated with iphones and androids. cant get decent speeds in slightly built up areas anymore.

Yeah, I'm sure like all carriers signal varies from time to time, I just hope it's consistent. I'm now more miffed at the fact I have to stick it out another month and go through the rigamirale of porting my number. Knowing my luck 3 will up the price and block tethering in that time.

Well, I folded and bought a blue S3 on 3 :D! I went in with the intention of asking few questions but came out with a new toy. Time to root I think :p
 
Just a quick note, 3 seems absolutely fine as far as speeds/connection is concerned. Well, in my area at least. I just need the PAC code ASAP so this bad boy can be my primary device :)
 
welcome, set a screen protector. contrary to belief these phones can still get scratched screens. mine scratched in my pocket some how.

Ouch! I got a screen protector/gel case to prevent any scratching on the screen or body. Had the same on my Desire since day 1 and it's in absolutely pristine condition. No matter how good Gorilla glass claims to be at resisting scratches, all it takes is a coin/keys etc in the pocket to give it a scratch.
 
Well, I'm rooted. Piece of cake compared to the Desire to be honest (or I'm just more familiar with these processes). Looking forward to researching the current roms, but the Cyanogen Jellybean looks right up my street :D.

I strongly recommend sticking with samsung roms at first. Almost half of the features are lost going to aosp.
