Root [International] What ROM do you use and which Kernel?

Hmm. Looking for a kitkat ROM for my I9300. Has anyone had any experience with the Beta of PA? I just don't know. I am looking for something stable that I can use without my phone flipping out on me.

I am currently running PA 4.3 but I having huge problems with the camera and video since I have started using them. I am hoping that the kitkat ROM will fix these issues.

If you have not used PA can you advise what ROM you use and with what kernel?

I've only heard bad things about PA's kitkat builds but there are some other great roms. I go between Carbon and Neat Rom AOSP.
other great ones to look at are Liquid Smooth and Validus.
If you prefer something really plain with few features then there's CM11.

PA seem to have changed their philosophy and are going for a more plain stock rom

As for kernels I find that the one that comes with the rom is usually best. There aren't many good ones I know of for the international s3

Funky - Can you tell me what the latest philz touch is that would be suitable for flashing kit kit roms? and also do you have a link for the carbon rom?

hey mate. I use their app to get nightlies https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.carbonrom.downloaderpro
Its not free but it works far better than the site.
Theyre having problems with the nightly builds because cyanogen broke something so do you want me to upload the version im on where everything works?
Im on Philz 6 (based on CWM 6.0.4.5) and it works fine for kitkat. I dont know if theres a newer one

Wow yes please that would be great. I am just backing my files up now and doing a back up of device to SD CARD. Thanks

Yeah mate theyl be fine :-)
After you restore your apps i recommend activating ART in developer options to speed the phone up.
I think Carbon has a low DPI meaning font etc is really small but you can change that if you dont like it

Ok will give it a try. Should I do full wipe and format before installation> ?

Yeah definitely when moving up to kitkat. After this youll be able to flash carbon nightlies without wiping but this time do the wipe to flash rom option in Philz

Wheres developer options??

Found it??? - odd I thought the old hidden developer thing was 2012 not 2014?

Can you get me up to speed on ART please? what is it ? do I need it? how do I use it :p

eDIT ooooooooooooh very nice ................

You dont need it but it makes apps perform better/faster, scrolling is much smoother.
I dont understand the technical shit lol youd have to google that but its a "beta" feature and will probably be the default in the next big android version.
The only downside ive found is that Xposed Framework isnt compatible with it.
When you select it, the phone reboots and that first boot takes a long time to optimise each app.
I use ART on my s3 and nexus 7 and notice a big difference but other people say they dont notice it.
If you run the Quadrant app before and after youll see the huge increase in performance

I have forced GPU rendering and I impressed with the clarity. Something I didn't seem to get with PA. Does this ROM have Halo? or any other little treats? and tweaks?

Hmm, i never used halo but ill have a look.
What i love is Expanded Desktop (statusbar is always hidden but you can swipe down from the top to see it). I love that extra bit of space.
PIE is cool (carbon use Slim Pie). On my tab i use it instead of nav buttons but on the s3 i use it as a shortcut to my most used apps.
If i think of anythin ill let u know :)

P.s, if you wana turn off those stupid button backlights its in Advanced Options at the bottom of the settings list. EDIT its actually in Carbon Fibers

Also the animation tweaks are pretty cool

One thing this ROM is missing is the multi home screens that PA has on their ROMS. Basically when you scroll left and right I could have more home screens and put more apps and widgets :( - unless I am missing it mind you =?

Edit: Just playing around with launcher it seems that the Launcher3 is not working properly. If I use the Google Now Launcher, that works giving me multi home screens.

Expand desktop still not working for me ? - what is supposed to happen. I have ticked it but can't see any difference?

Oh yeah, in Carbon Fibres, Power Menu you have to add Expanded Desktop to Power Menu uploadfromtaptalk1397569551316.jpg then to turn it on or off hold in the power button.
Hmm thats strange about the launcher. I always use Nova so havent had any problems

As Funky said further up, if you haven't done so backup your EFS folder. If you're using Philz it has an option to back it up as well as kTool - you can never have too many EFS backups :-)

What's an EFS folder please.
Cheers

I don't know the ins and outs of it mate but it's sometimes lost while flashing a rom and when that happens the phone has no IMEI (identity) so it's like having a black listed phone, it won't connect to any network

Thanks funkylogik, so where do I find this folder so that I can back it up.
I have been doing a full backup when I install new roms, but from what I understand that creates an image of the existing rom. Obviously within the image created all the folders and files are there but I don't think it is possible to separately get a file or folder from the image, but only flash our device back to the previous state.

Bit long winded..... How do we just back up EFS folder, and where do I find it
Cheers

What recovery are you using? Philz has the option to backup EFS in Backup & Restore > custom backup to sdcard1 (external sdcard). And you can use the kTool app in the link Funky posted a few posts back.
