Help Invalid Recipient Texting due to spaces

Lurker
I have noticed this for a while now and my friend mentioned it as well. When searching around we weer unable to find a resolution to fix it.

When you save numbers to your contacts, Android automatically adds spaces in the phone number. Between area code and number then periodically to make it clearer to read. This is great.

However, if you I try to text someone from my contacts I keep getting an invalid recipient error. After closing the error button, the number is shown in the recipient field. I then have to manually delete the spaces in the number in the text message recipient field for it to accept it.

Is there any way to either save contacts without the auto formatted spaces, or to fix the issues from the messenger side?

What country are you in what phone have you got. Also are you using the stock SMS or a third-party SMS app that you installed?

For US and Canada, phone numbers are xxx-xxx-xxxx or xxx xxx xxxx format, and usually devices don't have any problems with that.

My previous phone, at least with some ROMs, would add punctuation (usually dashes rather than spaces) if I forgot to add my own. Putting a dash between the STD code and the number would stop it doing its own thing, which was good because US spacing is just wrong for other countries' number formats and made it harder for me to read them.

My current phone does not add any spacing I don't put in myself.

So it clearly is something that depends on the particular phone's software. However, like Mike I've never found phone-added punctuation to stop the number from working. But maybe try putting dashes in place of the spaces in one number and see whether that helps?

I live in the UAE and have the Samsung Galaxy S5 Duos. My friend with the S6 has the same issue. Numbers store as follows: +XXX XX XXX XXXX - this is common around the middle east.

Thanksfor the input mikedt, unfortunately the spaces are put in automatically when creating contacts.

I've used Samsungs in UK, Hong Kong and mainland China. The last Samsung I had, Galaxy Win Duos with JB 4.3, never came across this problem at all, e.g. in China mobile numbers are always formatted as 1xx xxxx xxxx, with spaces not hyphens "-", and landline numbers can vary in length, 010 xxxx xxxx, 0755 xxxx xxxx, 0479 xxx xxxx. That's how they're also presented by caller ID. But never seen any problems with that at all, they're always still recognized as valid phone numbers, for texting and copying and pasting.

AFAIK spaces or hyphens in phone numbers should be ignored by the messaging or the dialler, it's just for convenience of formatting.

To fix this use a root explorer, I used ES File Explorer.

1 - Browse and open the file feature.xml (normally located in SYSTEM\CSC\ folder but may be somewhere)

2 - In line <CscFeature_Message_MaxRecipientLenghtAs>10< change the value from 10 to 99

3 - Save and reboot (must reboot after changing for changes to take effect)

NOTE to users using wanam...installing wanam is one known cause that changes the value back to 10 esp in lilipop, even if you uninstall wanam the value stays.
