iOS for a weekend

Between the two of you posting it repeatedly in thread after thread I think that everyone understands your views -

- Samsung is the best

- But no Lollipop because it's either broken or looks bad

- Everyone else is probably wrong, their experiences are often wrong (and I'm exaggerating to drive a point ok)

It's really simple - some people like updates, some don't.

Those that don't, don't take them. Either by rooting or not rooting.

Everyone is entitled to their opinions and so please, post away.

While you may be sure that Lollipop is defective, others find it's not.

While you may be sure that Google ware is bloatware, others find it's not.

And no one is wrong.

Their experiences don't negate yours and your experiences don't negate theirs.

If someone advocates taking an update you don't want, they didn't just kick your dog.

I'm sorry about your life situation. No one needs to hear what amounts to guilt ahead of time should someone have the audacity to disagree with you. Neither is there a need for a preemptive strike.

You're not alone with the rest of the readers and posters not getting it and living it up.

It's safe to say that basically everyone here has life situations where the phone is absolutely essential and there's no budget to just blow on a new one.

I can guarantee you for an absolute fact that some people reading here are in far worse shape than you - and whether they are or are not, we tend to roll so it doesn't get personal. Points can be argued on their own merits without making it personal.

Except maybe for good natured ribbing. :D

Or in Lounge threads where you can let down your hair and rant among friends who feel the same way about life, phones and anything else.

This thread started with one person's experience with iOS and why they learned that they like Android better.

Excellent post. Good stuff.

From experience, we expect any thread with iOS in the title to degrade and then either fizzle out or turn into a flame war. The OP never wanted that but it happens.

If we're going to disagree, let's have fun doing it ok.

I saw a great comment the other day in response to a Phandroid news article -

The bizarre difference between an Android and an Apple site is that at the Android site, after everyone agrees that Apple sucks, nobody stops, they start arguing with each other about which Android sucks. :D

I'm still laughing my ass off about that. Any more and my pants are gonna look funny.

Whether you're old or young, life is short and it's not bad to make the best of it.

pants...what kind of battery do they take? and would they need task killer? would DeepSleep help?
 
To be honest, I don't believe Samsung is the best. It's the best device for my use case.

There are too many issues with LP for me to be happy using it.

I never said anyone else is wrong. Their insisting that vanilla Android is the only version everyone should use, and OEM'S skins are always bad, that I disagree with and I will state that.

Newer isn't always better, as anyone who has to relearn the app because of a UI change has had to deal with. Updates are overrated.

I'm no fan of the flat design interfaces proliferating these days. I tried them, they weren't for me.

Like I said, I exaggerated to make a point and I remembered when you were vocal (rightfully so) when a bad Android screwed with you, so I said what I said, nothing personal ok. ;)

I got way too wound up over Verizon pushing this out w/o me giving it permission.
Spent an hour on the phone 2/1/2014 with VZW tech rep conferenced into a call with Samsung's tech rep.
end result, they claimed that if I answer 'no' 3 times, that it will auto-install the next time it wants to upgrade.

that is when I turned off all of the update apps on my phone. knock knock, so far so good.
 
Seeing as I'm the all time post ho, a position I inherited from Steven58, I have nothing to add. :D

Fun fact - I run 4.4.2 with the 4.4.4 security updates patched via root.

I'm curious about Lollipop but what I have works and I don't fix what ain't broken. ;)
 
don't fix what ain't broke is my favorite motto also.
that is why I called into samsung/VZW to try and block the upgrade.

best I can do is turn off the upgrade apps.... wonder if VZW can over-ride that?
 
I remember when I had major issues with Android, but I was still a big Apple fan and I was trying to compare my iPhone 4 to a cheap no name handset like the ZTE Merit.

I'm not aware of any Sammy phones getting 4.4.4 yet. All mine are on 4.4.2, even the S4 despite a tiny update recently. I know I can freeze sdm.apk if I root, which isn't hard. I am putting that off for when or if the S4 gets lollipop. I saw screen shots of TouchWiz on lollipop and Ick isn't the correct word.

The SGS5 on Verizon and Sprint are getting the Lollipop update as we speak.

AT&T is getting the 4.4.4 update.

Lollipop is rolling out for the M8, already done internationally and starting soon on Sprint. The M7 updates started today.

The LG G3 will be getting it in the coming days, first on Sprint from what I've heard but don't quote me on that.

Yeah my wife got an s5 yesterday and got the lollipop update straight away.
It runs really smoothly even without a factory reset (although there were only a few apps on it when she took the update).
One thing I'll say about the rom is that the settings app menu is effing HUGE!
It's like a big list of pointless crap!
She loves it though so who am I to rant.
It's just mad how even cyanogen give you a lot more customisation than Samsung yet their main settings menu is less than half the size!

I compared these two phones because these are the two phones I currently use. My GS3 is my personal phone. My iP5S is my work phone. I also had to use the iP5S for a better part of a month full time. I felt that I have spent a fair amount of time with these two phones and for pretty much the same purpose.

Certainly a better comparison would be an iPad Mini with the GS3 as these two devices were released within a year of each other. There were some things I didn't do with the iPad Mini like using it to play music via BT audio in my car. In terms of my personal experience using devices, my use of iP5S and GS3 were for more similar purposes than the iPad Mini and GS3.

I find the GS3 is still serving me well after 2 and a half years. My contract is up in July. The phone I am interested in getting (Project Ara phone) may not be commercially available yet by then. If that is the case, I am quite happy continuing to use my GS3 until next year. I certainly don't feel the need to upgrade any time soon.

I seem to have a better experience with my GS3. Mine has been very stable. The last time it rebooted by itself was well over a year ago. The battery is small, but I bought an extended battery for it. It lasts all day for me. The latest update I got late last year seemed to have improved the battery life a bit as well. Although it will not match the smoothness of any current phone, I have no issues with its responsiveness. It's about as responsive as the iPad Mini.
 
I still have a Galaxy 'S' Verizon Fascinate in service, it "works great" if you consider the limitations of the technology at the time.

The little gal who is using it now, (I used it for 3-1/2 years) is pushing about 100+ SMS conversations thru it per hour

so in her view, the darn thing is "still great".
 
My S3 had some big problems. one of which was 'Cell Standby' eating the battery. i never did find a fix for it. where i live and used the phone, i only had one or two bars. it was always hot and had around 9 hours standby. it'd be chirping to plug it in (was 12%) after i got home from work. the S4 i use now is not anything like that. same signal, but Cell Standby is less than 15%. I come home with 79% battery remaining.

The other was a faulty AMOLED display, but i'm not sure if it was age (it was a year old) or the pentile matrix. after that time, white colors were showing with this hideous green hue, similar to a partial RGB color gun failure on an old CRT monitor. eventually the entire display blinked out. every pixel. phone was working and the notification light continued to flash, but the AMOLED died. I do wonder if the green hue issue happens over time or is a sign of EOL for AMOLED displays?

The S3 had one other annoying feature, but that might have been a symptom of Google and Samsung apps conflicting. the lock screen would freeze. i could turn the phone on, and see the screen, but nothing happened at all after that, couldn't even turn it off. nothing responded to touch but the clock and such continued to update properly. eventually, it'd 'catch up' to my multiple attempts to unlock and unlock and swipe over a few home screens and perhaps even launch an app. phone seemed very laggy at that point. only fix was a restart.
