[iOS5] Ridiculous Observation or not

I stumbled upon this ridiculous article
November 1st and iOS 5 Hasn't Fixed the F*cking 1 On the iPhone's Calendar

still-wrong.jpg

Basically it's a rant by someone who thinks that the number one in calender should be optically centric not geometrically .

Is that even a bug ?

I find it ridiculous anyway .

Any image pundits here who can share what is the difference between optical and geometric centers and stuff ?

If it wasn't for the pictures being side by side I wouldn't been able to tell a difference...

Seriously who cares? lol

I added lines vertical lines on the center of the calendar apps for you to see what the difference really is.

I've usually got a good attention to details (and the one on the right does look better), but that's pretty much asking for too much.

If I had to guess, the "1" on the left is centered, whilst the center of the "1" on the right is placed on the average x-position of every pixel that it consists of. It's hard to explain so I'll just stop before I get everyone even more confused. :p

Geometrically: The median pixel of the x-axis of the "i" is on the center of the calendar icon.

Optically: The average x-location of every pixel of the "i" is on the center of the calendar icon

Just my guesses.

I find it refreshing that someone is will to come out and say that not everything is perfect with the iPhone. It may be nitpicking (ok it is borderline psychotic), but you read so many articles where people simply praise everything about the iPhone without addressing any of the flaws. It's a nice change of pace and I'm sure someone has already burned the authors house down for it.

I never would have noticed, but once it was pointed out, and you can see how wrong it is... yeah, it'd bug me and my OCD. :o

I'm going to take your word for all of this, because I have no idea what you just said.

What Mr Perfect would find is that, if numerals were geometrically-centered as he insists is "correct", he would then be complaining about how double-digit numbers and text appeared "wrong". Someone needs to explain font design, especially kerning, to him.

I would have thought he was being completely ridiculous but I've met people with severe OCD recently and they would seriously find this unbearable.

gotta love it when someone who thinks they are smart end up sounding like a total fool. Before he makes fun of Steve Jobs' knowledge of typography, maybe he ought to learn some typography 101 himself. irregular spacing is everywhere AND intentional.

This type of nitpicking is unbecoming. And if you take a quick look at comments, you will see that he apparently took delight in banning anyone who disagreed with him and deleted whatever they said. Literally like every third comment is deleted by him.

Never even noticed that. But I jailbroke my iPhone 3Gs and made the calendar icon live so it showed the current date instead of always saying 1. Same with the clock and weather icons. Static icons for those kinds of things piss me off, especially the weather and date ones!

I think a ligature would give him a heart attack.

While typography has come a long way back from the glorious days when actual typesetters set type, much of modern typography is extremely poor and based purely on generic algorithms in InDesign or Quark. Many times "designers" just stick with the defaults.

Truth be told, optically the "1" on the right does look properly centered. Typographically it's understandable why the extra shift to the right is kerned (is that a word?) into a sans serif typeface (IT'S NOT A FONT DAGNABBIT, IT'S A FACE!) with no foot on the numeral 1. A typesetter would have likely made the correction. A program would have placed it according to the spacing rules built into the font file.

When I worked for Apple I had some douche twizzler's call escalated to me because the keys on the iPhone were stacked on top of each other instead of offset like a computer's keyboard. Fortunately for me I was getting paid by the hour but why some idiot would want to discuss with me for TWO HOURS ON HIS OWN TIME why Apple didn't offset the keys on the keyboard is beyond me. I guess some people are just stuck on stupid.

Nice.

I actually prefer the stagger. I fat-finger much less in that configuration. But I'd never argue for 2 hours with a CSR about it... In fact, I probably would have noticed the first time I played with the phone and had to decide whether I could live with the "injustice" or not. What's the point in complaining after you make the purchase? :)

Even worse he was calling technical support as if we'd reverse engineer it for him on the spot and have it offset the way he wanted.

Probably my favorite call though was some guy calling because he claimed his iPhone would shock him from time to time and he had a pacemaker. Conveniently, the latest iPhone had just been released and he was hoping to get an upgrade. When I told him that I could exchange it for the same model he threatened legal action so I had to get him over to our legal department. Some people....

There's nothing wrong with the iPhone. The problem is with the number 1. You don't see this problem with the number 8 or 0, do you?
