Ipad mini looks like weak sauce

Yeah this thing is surprisingly idiotic. Let me criticize it!

first of all price! $329 tax shipping case you looking at $370. Next Dual-core A5 what is that? 1024x768 resolution ( tab 2 7" has the same resolution which i guess is ok for a 7incher but after using N7 anything below 1280 looks outdated) this on the other hand almost 8" tablet... not sure how those retina spoiled people would appreciate it. Aspect ration.. these guys totally smoke apples! what are they thinking? after 5 years they finally made a proper 16:9 line of devices(iphone5 and new ipod) a 4:3 tablet? Anyway it's too expensive... i hope they will bring this sucka down to $299 and drop ipod touch to $249 then we'll be talking again hopefully!

Ok, so for $30, your objections would go away?

The iPad is going to do something that the Nexus can't - run its own apps.

For a lot of people, that's all that matters.

That doesn't show up on a spec comparison.

Meanwhile, if you like the iPad, get it, if you like the Nexus or something else, get that.

No im not interested in ipad. Ipod touch is whats this is all about... Greatest music player ever made

I do think it's a bit overpriced, but the Apple faithful expect that and love to donate to the poor downtrodden mother ship. The 4X3 aspect is ideal for watching old tv episodes in standard def, it's a bit better for web browsing but that's more apparent when you go up to a 10" screen. For modern wide screen hi def video, it's not so nice unless you appreciate those expanded inky black bars the ipad is so good at providing. A wide screen video played in landscape on a android 7" tablet is not appreciably smaller than the same video played on full size ipad. I agree that the mini is ho hum, as was the i5 and the isheep will buy them by the millions.

Thinkin abit,

This feels a lot like an Apple misstep to me. I don't see the mini impacting the N7, KindleHD, NookHD market as much as it will cannibalize ipad(3) and ipod touch sales. I don't see Steve Jobs approving this device at this price, ever.

I love my N7 but admit the mini is looking nice. The one thing that bothers me the most with these "reviews" or first looks is comparing build quality. Topolsky of The Verge claimed that:
By comparison, the Nexus 7 and Fire HD feel like toys.
Fine, it's aluminum and glass and whatnot. But, who isn't going to put some sort of case on it anyway. Ugh. :(

It doesn't matter if you like it or hate it. It will likely get a nice chunk of the market share for this category of tablets due to the name alone. If there's anything anyone should know by now it is that price is irrelevant when it comes to fans of Apple products buying an Apple product.

I was counting on the iPad mini to have a decent price. I put off buying the Nexus 7 for 2 months so i could get the iPad mini for myself and another as a christmas present for my mother.

I missed out on the Nexus 7 because i was waiting on the iPad mini. Im hoping Google comes up with another great-value device in time for christmas, because im not buying the iPad mini now. Thanks for ruining my mother's christmas present Apple.

Wait a week and you'll know. The rumour-mill is suggesting an N7 with increased storage and a model with 3G capability. If there is truth in these rumours we'll likely know after Google's event on Monday.

I dont know.. Steve would probably waited till February and announced ipod, ipad 4,ipad mini(unlikely) and iphone 5 and the same time. Kept 2012 fall events for retina macbook and imac. This whole awkward rush is probably due to Microsoft windows 8 with surface and Google's new Nexus line. And this new lighting port didnt help at all.

I find the verge to be horribly biased in their scoring system. I stopped reading that site some time ago

Topolsky isn't bad, sometimes weirdly opinionated and focused on minutia that mainly only affect him, but fairly unbiased. It's when he talks with Neli Patel who unlike many in the tech blogosphere isn't so much an Apple fanboi as he is a Google hater, that things start to go off the rails. If you listen to Neli, Goggle has never done anything correct or original even if it's wildly successful. Any positive comment is followed with a "BUT".....

The Verge is Switzerland compared to Gizmodo BTW, not that I'm sticking up for the Verge.

info?? link to specs?

Full coverage (more or less) on the first page of this very site.

I am quite amazed. My guess is the planet wanted a mini so Apple decided to release (rush perhaps?) a rather poor entry. I would purchase almost any other tablet before I bought a iPad mini. Apple, I expected more!

If SJ were alive, would the Mini be such as it is?

Yep, it's quite a blow to those who didn't expect it. Looks like Cook's Apple is here to stay. Keep releasing a plethora a quick refreshes and make loads of cash.
Apple announces 4th generation iPad packing an A6X CPU, Lightning connector and FaceTime HD camera -- Engadget

My gosh . . . my sorta prediction might have come true. I started thinking about Apple sans SJ. Would fast dollars take precedent? At least Tim is not wearing jeans and black turtlenecks.

Not sure if the Mini was released to sell to the masses or if the device was carefully planned and this is the best Apple can do. My fear is Apple might start churning out device after device to serve a market that will shrink (perhaps) due to products like the Mini; driving people away from iPads into the waiting arms of the little green robot.

The specs do not make me salivate and I will not buy one.

What's with the screen? I thought it would be more than it turned out to be. That said, it is fine by me.

Little known fact: the iPad Mini is built from left over Kindle and PlayBook parts at Foxx, during breaks between fights on the production line.

Yes, but you did not buy a Nexus 7, and the loss of that one sale probably cost a salesman or an iSlave his job.

I say wait a week until something new arrives. Something will arrive that might make you wonder if you should have bought an N7 or waited.:D Perhaps the N8 will arrive before Christmas.

Hmmm . . . perhaps not. Sure, you are likely right, but perhaps Apple has met their Waterloo.

Waterloo is the tablet market and Apple is Napoleon. Wellington is the Android Robots given name and he leads the Allied Forces. If I recall the players and my history correctly. the Allied forces really ticked off Mr. Bonaparte (sp?).

Perhaps Apple will be defeated this one time; it might be good for them. They can take a breath and reflect on the recent Patent Office's ruling. I hate to say it, but Apple's success is not guaranteed. That said, they have tens of billions to fiddle with and should the Mini fail, they can likely withstand the loss. I hope Cook is ready for a challenge.

I will be watching this one especially.

The iPad mini seems inferior to the iPad3 for only $70 less.

I wonder if there is going to be a market in a month when the 'must haves' have made their purchases and it faces true market conditions.
