Ipad or Xoom??

I REALLY like this.

"I would use this analogy for buying a xoom now. You have a smoking hot girlfriend that snores. Can you live with it? If little things bother you get an I device...or a softer sleeping less atractive girl."

Exactly. Other than maybe game emulators, what android exclusive apps would make people buy an $800 xoom over a $429 ipad?

You mean a $729 ipad based on memory, 3g radio and wifi, which you can't even get subsidized ipad.

So really it's a $599 xoom vs a $729 ipad. Motorola has priced this very aggressively!

But then again, you get so much more with a xoom, you can't even compare it to an ipad! :D

Bottom line - to the original poster. If you are happy with the iPad..keep it! The systems are completely different, and BOTH have pluses and minuses. Don't let anyones opinions on here sway your choice - as you need to find out what the best fit for you is.

Why post this if not to get others opinions in an attempt to sway yours? Kind of silly to say that. If the OP didn't want opinions then the keep it to themselves.

i own and love my rooted droid x .. its a monster BUT 12 tablet apps on the xoom vs 50,000 plus on the ipad .. thats a lot of catching up to do .. the camera is awesome and the customization (wigdets, live wallpapers ect) but i want to support the devs and buy plenty apps n games .. unfortunately the xoom is absolutely lacking in that department .. i'm personally going to have to wait this one out..i want a tablet not just to be a bigger version than my already big phone lol

I'm so sick of all the ipad/Xoom comparisons.
I NEVER wanted an ipad.
Its just a big iPod touch. Revolutionary? I think not. Didn't even come w/ a camera...

c'mon now, the iPad was released about a year ago.

but you're right, i'm sick of the ipad/xoom comparisons as well, as the xoom should be compared to the iPad2 coming late March/early April.

To be honest it shouldn't be compared to the ipad 2 either. Till the android market gets going with tablet ready apps, it is just something to use to surf the internet

Actually, I mean the $429 ipad. No one is gonna pay almost $400 more to get a 3g radio and a tablet with almost no apps. :D

And that $600 xoom is really $1,080 once you are done with the contract. By the time your contract is up, you'll be able to get an ipad3 for $429. hahahaha

You mean iPad 3Gs don't have contracts?

I sold my 64gb iPad and used the proceeds to buy a xoom. I cannot stand iOS. It's so elementary that it really bugs me. I still have an iPod touch that I use strictly for listening to music. However, that doesn't get much use either because I use my EVO (along with PowerAmp) for listening to my music.

I used an iPhone for a month and sold it because Apple limits users sooo much! The selection of apps is great, BUT in reality, most people use an app a few times and not use it again.

I was thinking for long and picked xoom as better hardware and promissing new os. I like my iPhone 4 but I don't like to have tablet with same specs as phone. Also hate all this noise and millions of people sleeping near to the apple store to get something new there.
I am missing netflix and skype video only in xoom, otherwise it is better tablet than apple made. New one still will miss freedom of android and requared crappy iTunes.

The most popular ipad, the $429 one, doesn't have contracts. If people wanted 3g, the 3g-less ipad wouldn't outsell the other ipads.

I have nothing but love for the $800, no app having xoom. :D

And neither does my Xoom, no contract. For $651.84. Even if was just a mistake my Moto. I think you're just jealous.

;)

And if the iPad actually had the specs the Xoom has, it'll be 800 bucks. But Jobs doesn't work like that at Apple, he wants his products to improve very little at a time. You'll see ;)

Hehehe, he is going to add a camera (or two), and increase the processor to a dual core, and bring the RAM up to 512MB according to most leaks.

He isn't putting HDMI, USB, or SD card slots on it.

5 bucks says he calls the camera revolutionary 0.o

WOW, that's a huge step! I thought the iPad 6 was getting the extra ram. :D

Like what?

3G monitoring, Weather, Video, Games especially the THD which from what I hear are better than anything on iPad, Backgammon, reading books, great web browsing, News apps galore, Pulse, CNN etc, Facebook, runing a third party launcher without being jailbroken with great widgets,.........

Dude, really must I go on?

Like what?

Video, web browsing (much nicer than on my Droid, might I add), facebook, watching the weather so I know when I have to snow blow my driveway yet again, email (both home and corporate exchange...loving the new clients even though I know not everyone does), and, of course, Angry Birds. :D I feel it was 800 bucks well spent. Could those things be done on a cheaper tablet? Sure. Maybe even an iPad. LOL! But, my choice was for the Xoom and I have absolutely no regret with that purchase. That is, however, a very personal choice. This entire iPad vs Xoom debate comes down to a personal choice. Being locked into the Apple infrastructure where everything is tightly controlled, including the user experience, vs a more open environment where deveopers have more freedom to innovate. As a software engineer, I can tell you which one I appreciate on a personal and professional level. In fact, I made that choice with my hard earned $$$. :)

I know this isn't the app thread, but, I must say the accuweather app hard locked my Xoom yesterday morning when I was playing around with the radar/satellite view. I had to come out to my laptop to find out how to hard reset the thing! :D

Remember pioneers end up with a few arrows in there backs. Won't hurt to bad.

It wasn't a complaint. Just an observation. As I said before, I'm happy to be on the bleeding edge on this one. I'm a person that bought a Droid on day 1 because it was different than the iPhone and had serious potential. If only that Droid thing had worked out. :D I think the Xoom is in the same position as the Droid was....a google experience device to show "hey, this is what we have, come innovate for it" and allow the thing to just take off. I can't wait to see what people come up with.

Bottom line, it's preference. Working with all of these devices (and their owners), day in and day out, I find that each appeals to different set of personalities.

Apple is 'cool', trendy. Most of the users of the iPad (and iPhone) that I come in contact with could care less about specs or functionality. Heck, most don't really understand what all their devices are capable of doing. They want attractive hardware and something that, at least by perception, is easy to use. Ultimately, the like the simplicty of UI. Everything is pretty much laid out, in plain sight. For the most part, the icon or graphic spells out what it does. When talking to perspective smartphone customers, they have heard or feel that the OS is easy to use and that's all they want. And certainly, this is not to make a sweeping generalization. However, as I tell my coworkers, the truly knowledgable and objective make up a very small part of any platform base.

Android, on the other hand is new, customizable, and flexible. Some customers are overwhelmed by the various options and settings, but that's also what they're looking for - options. One of the biggest draws I find with Android devices is that customers have a myriad of choices: touch screen vs. hardware QWERTY, 3.Xinch screen vs 4.Xinch screen, navigational button vs. all touch interface, etc. The second draw that I find is the UI. iProducts are simpler, but Android devices are more functional. A savvy Android user can access more information in one or two swipes of the screen versus using an iOS setup.

The whole application debate is becoming a moot point. Let's face it, developers have some smarts; there's few that are just going to choose one platform over another unless there is a technological reason for doing so. As it relates to the Xoom and upcoming tablets, the scene is just getting started. The iPad is certainly a more mature product and, at this time, has a more robust selection of apps. This will all be null and void in another year or so as developers get underneath Honeycomb and the market CONTINUES to grow.

With the side by side youtube results showing a very slight advantage for the Xoom. The question has to be asked. Will the Ipad 2 change your mind on the purchase of a Xoom or will you go Apples?

For me I'm still on the fence, I want the Android software but I love the size and reliability of the new Ipad plus the auto-shutoff case is very forward thinking. And a faster processor all adds to my dilemma. SPECS for the Crapple HERE

I wish Moto would come out with a price drop and OTA update on the 3.0 software and certify the 1.5 speed boost as supported.
