Ipad2 vs. A500

I bought the A500 for my wife. My 7 year old daughter pretty much immediately confiscated it. I then bought a 64GB Ipad2 for the wife.

In my opinion the Ipad2 sucks. There is no external storage capable stuff on it, everything has to be in the Apple format, it was about $300 more expensive.

The worst part about it is that almost every app cost money for the Ipad and there is a ton of free stuff for the A500.

I am seriously thinking about dumping the and buying another A500, that way I only have to figure out how to support one platform.

What are your thoughts on this? I still have about 6 days to return the Ipad.

Well for me I would definitely return it. But I hate everything apple.
They are too expensive and like you found out you have to buy everything to make it work correctly like an attachment for usb and anything else you may want to add. But I have been this way for years. The way Apple saturates the market. You go to the store to but a cover for a zune or anything that isn't apple and there is two whole displays for apple and one slot for other stuff.
Enough of my rant.
Sorry

I second everything above. Return that crapple who thinks its their way or the high way. You will be happier with your decision.

I'm definitely not one of the Apple haters -- my desktop and laptop computers are all Macs, and I think OS X beats the hell out of Windows. But my mobile devices are Androids, because both Android the hardware and software are far more flexible than the iOS competition.

But of course, you're hanging out with Android people here. If you raise this point on an Apple-centric forum, your responses will likely vary. :p

that way I only have to figure out how to support one platform.

I found this to be true for my wife and me. We routinely talk about apps that we've found independently, and I can help her with the occasional problem. There really is a pretty steep learning curve with these devices, and there's no reason to have two curves.

I don't necessarily hate Apple I just don't like the closed attitude I have always ran into. You couldn't even buy parts for Apple. I think that may be changing but I'm not sure.
I like PC's mainly cause I love to tweak stuff and build stuff. And Apple wasn't the option for that kind of attitude. If it has changed I would love to get one to tear it open and mess around with ti.

I don't hate Apple devices either, I do like my iPod Classic as a music player. Apple are not even close though when it comes to what I can do with my standard Android phone (SGS) or my standard Android tablet (A500).

I had to face this choice myself recently. I ended up buying a a500 (superior tablet) and a PS3 for the same price as one Apple tablet. The choice is pretty common sense to me, if you want something you're going to be happy with day in and day out get the a500. If you want something you might be able to pick women up with because you're "hip" I would go with the Apple paperweight.

Wow is that why Im having a hard time picking up women.
Oh no wait Im old and ugly.
And cranky.....

In my opinion, It's nothing more than a huge iPhone without the phone... Now I really enjoyed my iPhones, but now that I have switched over the the little green man, I can't even think of going back.

I definitely think the Ipad 2 sucks when you take a closer look at it. A .3MP front and .97MP rear cameras? That's as good as some child's camera and this is from Apple, who's supposed to be a leader in video and the like!!! Unlike another poster here, there is no USB, either micro or regular. There's no SD slot for all those great Apple memories and there's no standard micro HDMI connector, just a dongle. I am so glad I got an Acer A500 that I paid $100 less than a comparable Ipad2 and have a USB connector (2 actually), SD reader and standard HDMI connector. None of these are found in the Apple Ipad 2 with the exception of an HDMI connection via a DONGLE!!!

There is only one thing the Ipad 2 has over the Acer A500 and that is the fact that it's slightly thinner. So what, my Acer still impresses at Starbucks and wherever I go. I like Android, I think they really put a lot of thought into it and I like playing games and the Need For Speed that's included on it just blows me away (the graphics).

Well, it's been 12 days now and I wonder what your decision was. Did you go for better, faster, cheaper, more capable and more connections or did you just go for a brand that graphics artists use? I wish you well.

Actually, I do not agree with this statement. The only reason the ipad2 is thinner is because it does NOT have those ports. If the Acer did not have those ports then it would be just as thin if not even thinner than the ipad2. Acer made that choice when they decided to include the ports. In order to have those ports you have to have a thicker device, there's no way around that. I picked up the new Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and I'm loving it. However, I was in Costco the other day and saw the Aconia. I must admit I was very very impressed. Yes it's thicker and heavier but I'll tell ya, not by much. It felt really good in my hands and it has all the ports. I would say the Aconia is the overall best tablet on the market today! The Galaxy Tab has better resolution, is thinner and lighter but it lacks the ports. You can add thos ports with adapters so I put the Tab well above the ipad2 but overall the Aconia is a sleek tablet that has everything. Great Job Acer!!

I agree with you that the A500 is slightly thicker because it has all the ports. I just picked up an HDMI cable with the micro port on one side and the regular on the other end. Yes, the Ipad 2 does HDMI, but not directly, only with a dongle. I'm so pleased I bought the A500 instead of the Crapple Ipad 2.

I'm not an Apple hater either, actually I went back to the iPhone after having an Evo and I will probably never get another Android phone again, but the tablets are a different story. Being able to download files on the fly and immediately access them on my A500 is one of the best features about that and any other Android device.

Still though, there are some things that I like about the iPad that the a%00 lacks I don't really like fact that it by default goes to the mobile versions of websites and my wife's iPad doesn't. Yes I know you can change this in the settings, but certain sites like ESPN and Gamespot still take you to the mobile site regardless. I also hate the lack of apps that are optimized for Tablets. Why is the IMDB app showing trailers in low res while the iPad version shows much nicer hi res trailers?

At the end of the day though, those are minor issues when you factor in price and all the other things this bad boy brings to the table.

You bring up some valid points and yes, some of it is in settings and some of it is due to the Android Tablets being new, while Apple is on it's 2nd Ipad. Since the Android Tablets are new, there've been Android phones for a while longer, hence the seeming default of mobile sites. This will change and part of it is people like us telling ESPN or the IMDB app that we don't use Android mobile, but an Android Tablet.
