iPhone 4, Game changer?!

and dosen't apple block porn also?

They sure don't. The web browser is the porn portal, not the App Store. Guess which one Apple didn't block? The whole "Apple blocks porn!!" thing is marketing aimed at clueless parents, another in a long list of outright lies.

It was funny watching him NOT connecting to At&t... and that's the Achilles-heel...

Nice looking phone, futuristic and sleek, thin, but lets see how the battery life is, and if it's (battery) interchangeable

I disagree i think the phone is ugly and to blocky, but that is just my opinion

I too found that pretty funny especially the tib bit he through in their about support from the carrierS

The phone looked kind of like the Zune HD.

There was nothing revolutionary about the phone, just compare it to the Evo, the only things it bests the Evo in is screen resolution and 30 fps HD video (if it does it in the real world, that is).

hello Forum! This new announcement of the iPhone set me off into info gathering mode, somehow I wound up actually creating an account on Android Forums in the process. haha! So be it, Im a brand new member I am how ever no NOOB! I sell this crap for a living every day... So:

All the bases are covered in this thread, the device has some impresive specs and an industry first video chat, although being that it requres WiFi I would call it a glorified iTouch feature, not a mobile phone feature meh. Any way. lets face it. No other company on earth can create so much hype about a launch as the metalic apple can. People will flock for it, and I pitty them. The Droid platform is every bit as good and far superior in some ways to that of its shiney nexus apple counterpart. I ADORE my Eris, and I love nothing more than to do stuff with it infront of my appletard friends in areas where I KNOW they will have no service. hehe... Any way, I am more or less seeing If I am able to post yet But Ill be around, this place is cool.

The one thing that would truly be a game changer, the thing that I was worried about, is video calling. It's the thing that if you have it, then all your friends will want it too and that leads to monopoly. But Apple botched it up by making it wifi-only while EVO and galaxy has it over 3G as well.

I like the higher resolution but i'm not feeling the design look like everything else out there it remind me of the instinct.funny how lets say 5000 at the event and he had to tell them to turn off there devise just to get connected.let the hype begin..

That demo was epic FAIL ha ha! :D

How come the 3GS coped with the internet just fine when the "new and improved" iPhone just didn't want to play. Amazing.

The gyro feature might turn out useful though...

sorry if i'm hijacking the thread, and sorry for my ignorance ! but i wanted to ask ...

i don't get the hype with this "new" video calling technology. my current phone does video calling and my previous phone (which i replaced over 2 years ago) did video calling as well.

those video calls were done over the mobile network at the cost of a regular voice phone call (iirc), and not over mobile internet via some external service like qik etc.

is there something else to the video calling technology that's surfaced over the past couple of weeks or so? am i just entirely missing the point?

my current phone is an n95 (my android phone is hopefully arriving this week) and the phone before that was some obscure vodafone motorola phone (e770v) that they had on a 2 for 1 special to try and get the video calling popularity up.

You're not missing any point. It's Steve's usual trick of presenting 'old' technology as 'new and revolutionary'.

OK, first, I want to talk COSTS!!! I'll say it again, COSTS COSTS COSTS COSTS COSTS!!!

You see, when the hype boils down on the new albeit impressive iPhone 4, people will start realizing the cost of using all of these "new" features. New AT&T customers will get it handed to them BIG TIME!!!! AT&T just changed their data rates so that if you go over the 2 Gig (25 dollars) / month threshold, it will cost an extra $10 per extra gigabyte.

AT&T swears that this will not affect 98% of their customers because they dont use that much data. Well, even if I took them at their word, my response will be, "NOT YET."

The new iPhone will be getting new MOVIE streaming from netflix, HD Video recording (NO doubt, you will want to upload), and video calling (Its over wifi for now, but it will be over 3g later). SO, with all of these added features, How much data will people be using NOW??? And, I haven't even brought up tethering!!!!!

That sound you will be hearing in 2 months is the sound of people screaming and moaning when they get their new bills!!!

Compare that with Sprints Unlimited data, with no cap when you by the EVO 4G, and we have a clear cost winner. Plus the EVo can video call over 3g and 4g.

Yes, the iPhone 4 is an impressive piece of hardware and the software has seen some nice improvements, but I'll be sticking with my EVO, thank you very much. Even the new iPhone 4 features are still no match for EVO!!!!

Well, to be fair, Apple and Sprint are bringing the tech into the main stream in the US. We in the US have been slow about upgrading to that kind of tech, but now, this is the breakout year for US mobile video conferencing for the common folks. Thats why their is all the hype. I'm excited. I got the evo, and I can't wait till more people get the EVo's so I can vchat with them.

The really funny thing about this plan is that the first two gigabytes are more expensive than each gigabyte afterwards.

.

I thought the video calls at the iP4 demo, if that is what you are referring to, were all WiFi and not over the cellular network(I haven't watched it but watched the CNBC coverage) and that the video calling would not be available via 3G? Or was it that they had to use WiFi because 3G wasn't providing a good connection?

As stated, the hype is due to the tech being available on a platform which has a large user/fan base. I just find it odd that my "non-Google" phone has video calling via Google Talk and Android phones don't.

FWIW, I did a Skype-to-Skype video call, without using Fring, and the data rate hovered around 200Kbs, depending on amount of talking being done. My 5 minute test call generated 4MB up and 3MB down. I'm glad I re-upped with AT&T and locked in the unlimited data plan...the new pricing teirs are all kinds of out of whack. I'm just waiting for a decent Android phone and Android support for slingmobile.

As far as iP4 multitasking, from what I understand, its implemented like older Nokia OS...not true multitasking, per se.

Well considering it will be sold in who knows how many countries, I wouldnt read too much into that when it comes to stateside carriers...

Andorid makers need to step up the game, as the new iPhone is very good, reading about the iPhone 4 right now (WWDC, Steve Job keynote) i was really amazed, i don't own any apple product and i don't like apple close system.

but:

  • 960x640 (326ppi) IPS Display with 800:1 contrast ratio
  • Long battery life (7 hours talk, 6 hours 3G browsing, 10 hours WiFi browsing, 10 hours video & 40 hours music.)
  • A4 chip (as i understand it's really the main reason of the long battery life now offered)
  • 3 axis gyro ( i didn't see that one coming), a gyro+accelerometer+compass=six axis aware device (The wood demo is really WOW)
  • 5MP camera (larger sensor) + 720P HD video @ 30FPS + LED flash
  • iOS 4!

For me, more resolution is always better (and since the limit of the human eye ~= 300ppi) , all mobile phone should have a minimum of 300ppi.

The new Gyro is a welcome move, as i always wanted my phone to senses when i rotated flat on a table. this will not only be great from game, but imagine Google earth with six axis awareness.

The A4 and the longer life was expected, but nice move Apple .

The camera was screaming for an update and the HD recording is a nice touch.

I still preffer FroYo to iOS4 ... but iOS4 is really amazing with loads of new features.

iPhone was behind in terms of the hardware, but not any more.

Devices that already murder this.

Evo 4G and Droid Incredible. No game changer for iPhone 4 the game changer was android. Apple just picked up on it and screams louder due to the name apple.

Galaxy S is soon to throw iPhone 4 in the waters.

Samsung will be a big deal because it will go to 110 countries while EVO and the Droids are US only. Once Android gets some global action instead of just a US phenomenon, things will get very exciting.

Agreed, Samsung is the only real contender. But their lack of customer service is left to be desired. The Galaxy is the only the other phone I think matches the iPhone 4 in terms of spec.
