iPhone 4, Game changer?!

I am going to be honest. I don't like Apple (bad experience).

BUT this phone does have the hardware to rival (perhaps even beat out non-altered) top notch Android devices (though altering phones is a big part of the Android community lol).

I am not going to say it is a game changer in the sense that it is revolutionary (because the hardware does not beat out phones like the Droid Xtreme/Galaxy S), but I am going to say that it is a game changer in the sense that it will cause manufacturers like HTC/Motorola/Samsung/LG/etc step up their games and make phones which are head and shoulders above (ie phones that feature a 1.5GHz Scorpion dual core processor).

As of right now, the average person prefers iPhone OS to Android OS (it is simpler, most people here don't care, but the average person does). In order for opposing manufacturers to convert people to Android, they are going to need hardware head and shoulders above (which is how they are weening people away from the old iPhone to Android currently).

Is this WiFi-only restriction for iPhone 4's video chat just for the US market or in general?

I would imagine most of the time people would want to use video chat on a mobile, they would want to do it away from WiFi, otherwise, they might as well simply use their home computers or their laptops on the road.

EVO 4G scores a win with being able to use this feature away from WiFi.

The iPhone 4 screams "catch-up phone" to me.

iOS4 is not "revolutionary." I cannot think of one innovative feature. Think about it:
  • Multitasking -- Pseudo multitasking; not on par with Android or Web OS (which does multitasking better than anyone else)
  • App Folders -- o_O.
  • New Mail App -- Unified Inbox. o_O
  • Custom backgrounds -- Wow, now I can do what I could do on my old flip phone from 2002. Innovation.
  • iAds -- Apple's newest innovation, an in house advertising system. Good for developers, doesn't matter to anyone else.

I don't get how iOS4 is amazing.

I'm glad to see the A4 being used in the new iPhone, but otherwise I'm not really very impressed.

It's not only catch-up, it's barely that much of an upgrade from the 3GS. Better screen, twice the RAM (from 128 to 256 which is still half of the N1, Evo, etc), processor (which will be outdated when the dual core snapdragon hits mid-year), and a few ideas they "stole" from Android. Hell, even WinMo7 seems better than what Apple is trying to do. Of course you'll hear fanboys rave about it (hopefully somewhere away from this forum) and the general public will jump on it without realizing what Android is offering.

The iPhone platform is too fragmented. It won't survive if they don't get this under control. You have the new 4 with the full iOS 4, the 3GS with a subset of iOS 4, the 3 and below with no iOS at all, the 4 has twice the resolutions as the 3GS and below and the iPad has a totally different screen size and no info on if and when its getting iOS4. Developers will have to target too many platforms and it will never catch on. If they don't get this fragmentation under control they won't last long.

Now where have I heard all that before....?

No, they block risque apps (porn included). You can still access all the internet based porn you want via the browser on any apple product.

How much of that internet porn is in HTML5? *crickets*

But the Betamax lost because of porn thing is a long busted myth. It might have played a small part, but there were 20 VHS machines for every 1 Beta, and their price came down quicker, thus tons sold more...eventually ALL movies in rental stores went mainly to VHS.

I think it is a game changer, but not how the subject is meant to be read.

Apple's business model has always been a high-profit/low volume model. Ever since the original Apple Computer (in 1977). A really nice computer for the times, but closed system, low volume, high price item. Apple could have been the dominate computer company in the world, but just like the Iphone they choice their closed system and the IBM PC model, manufactured by hundreds of companies eventually captured the market.

The same is true in the phone market, where Apple demands a higher price for all their devices and keeps their system locked down; Android devices are made by many companies and have already passed Apple in sales. Apple has limited it's market to AT&T in the US on purpose, I believe because it matches their business model and they don't have the supply chain to support higher demand.

The Iphone 4 is a nice phone, but nothing earth shattering, in many cases, it is subpar to the existing Andriod devices, many of which can be had with a contract for FREE, which you will never see from Apple. In the US, Android devices can also be had on any network, extremely important based on where you live and which provider has the best service not the best device.

So yes, it is a game changer, one that will drive Apple to #3 in the smartphone business behind Android & RIM. The failed Iphone 4 Product Release Video today with the side-by-side comparision with the 3GS is just Priceless. GAME OVER :p

Ok, IMO, kickstand is really a stupid marketing gimmick that i would never personally use. Second, the whole camera thing, there is WAY more to cameras than megapixel count. The iPhone 4 is integrating some sensor technologies that are standards in digital cameras but have been nearly absent from smart phone cameras. Same idea behind why a two year old, 8 megapixel dSLR takes better pictures than a brand new 12 mp point and shoot. Theres is more to photo technology than pixels. The iPhone 4 camera will probably be one of the best for photo quality (can't be worse than droids crappy camera). I really dislike all apple products, but i must admit, i really hope that some of this camera technology works its way into a verizon android phone when I am eligible for my annual upgrade. I'm eligible in november, but i'll porbably wait for LTE devices in 2011.
Just curious, where did Apple mention the larger sensor? How is the sensor compared to the 1 year old Nokia N86 and the upcoming N8? Those two phones are known to have real camera quality lenses and sensors.

I thought the video calls at the iP4 demo, if that is what you are referring to, were all WiFi and not over the cellular network(I haven't watched it but watched the CNBC coverage) and that the video calling would not be available via 3G?
...

Sorry, yeah I am referring to the calls that I can make currently with my mobile network (I can choose to make a voice call or a video call to video-capable devices).

From all that I've read today about the new iPhone, it'll only be able to make calls over WiFi (so over the internet).

Andorid makers need to step up the game, as the new iPhone is very good, reading about the iPhone 4 right now (WWDC, Steve Job keynote) i was really amazed, i don't own any apple product and i don't like apple close system.
It is very cocky to say that android makers need to step up the game when there are ALREADY rumors of DUAL CORE SNAP DRAGONS... not to mention 1.5 GHZ variants.

Odds are these aren't finished products yet.. but, they will probably be out soon enough.
but:

  • 960x640 (326ppi) IPS Display with 800:1 contrast ratio
  • Long battery life (7 hours talk, 6 hours 3G browsing, 10 hours WiFi browsing, 10 hours video & 40 hours music.)
  • A4 chip (as i understand it's really the main reason of the long battery life now offered)
  • 3 axis gyro ( i didn't see that one coming), a gyro+accelerometer+compass=six axis aware device (The wood demo is really WOW)
  • 5MP camera (larger sensor) + 720P HD video @ 30FPS + LED flash
  • iOS 4!

These features are impressive, What I do think you aren't taking into account is this.. When Apple released the first iphone, it blew everything else out of the water.. It really was a game changer.. Even if individual phone's aren't catching up with the iphone now.. the android os is, and look at the computer industry... even if one individual pc doesn't outsell mac.. there is a lot of pc's being sold.

Now that the "arms race" has started.. I really feel like the fact that ALL Of this was pretty much known before the iphone ever got out means we are all left somewhat unimpressed...

For me, more resolution is always better (and since the limit of the human eye ~= 300ppi) , all mobile phone should have a minimum of 300ppi.
I just heard about this today.. You would think monitor companies would be trying to sell you this for the last 100 years :/ It is interesting.. but, I don't think it is a necessity by any means...

The new Gyro is a welcome move, as i always wanted my phone to senses when i rotated flat on a table. this will not only be great from game, but imagine Google earth with six axis awareness.
It is interesting.. and I do hope that people have fun with it.. However, I don't know if I want to call this a game changer...i saw someone playing jenga which looks interesting.. but, I'm going to wait until I see this being used somehow usefully until I say it is a game changer.

The A4 and the longer life was expected, but nice move Apple .

I am not trying to knock apple.. but, I never trust these things until I see it with my own two eyes.. this is NOT just for apple.. that is for ANY battery life claims

The camera was screaming for an update and the HD recording is a nice touch.
While I am interested in seeing how great the new camra is.. It does bug me people are talking like they have already seen it first hand.. My e71x had a better camra than my 5 or 6 year old digital camra at 7 megapixels.. So there is a good chance the camra will blow others out of the water..

But, again to call it a "game changer" may be a bit premature.. While high quality pics are always nice.. HOW much higher are they going to be over the evo's or nexus one's? I would be happy with the n1 quality from what I've seen.. and Odds are most people would settle for a lesser camra..

Although people do love getting "more" for there money.. so that could be an encouraging factor.. the question is really gunna be does it stack up.
I still preffer FroYo to iOS4 ... but iOS4 is really amazing with loads of new features.
Umm... I am not trying to be mean but, have YOU gotten to play with this thing yet!?! I mean sure these all sound great on paper but, my god man have some skeptasizem! I am not THAT excited about the nexus one and I believe its the second coming of raptor jesus! I mean I expect to love the n1 if I can get it and have 0 problems with it, however, I am not going to say that it IS everything I read it is until I play with it... or if I say it "IS" i mean it is "capable of doing x" I think what I am trying to say here is the thing isn't even out yet.. I am trying not to find fault in this thing but, I don't want to hop on the "i already know its gunna rule" train.. I mean there is still potential for horrible overheating.. I haven't noted anyone complaining about hot ipads but, I haven't looked..

I would really feel like it is more of a game changed *IF* something that wasn't listed to come out before the conference was made was announced.. If every new Iphone came with a bluetooth keyboard and free copy of "iphone excel" and bluetooth mouse.. then yes.. I would say "OHHHH *****" all hands on deck its coming out swinging! If they were going to openly push for it to replace laptops in such a fashion..

I hate apple but, I am trying to give them some slack.. however, let not act like we are already playing with the thing.. I am giving it a chance to be great, all I ask is others give it a chance to actually have some flaws.
iPhone was behind in terms of the hardware, but not any more.
Sorry, I still feel like they are behind in terms of hardware..While it may be faster than anything in the current market.. It still does have some real competiton.. and I do think the competition puts up a fair fight..

And the fact that it didn't propel itself as far as it did with the original iphone is pretty damning considering this.

with the original iphone apple slung shot itself into first place in terms of a great phone everyone wanted.. Hardware wise no one could match it even with better processors.. well for a while now.. android has been nipping at the iphone's heels.... and sure it gained some ground today... but, it isn't the kind of ground it gained originally.

The game has not changed YET.

And something else i want to point out.. while the A4 may be faster than snapdragon.. We are still dealing with phones here.. even if the a4 is superior hardware.. the snap dragon is more than fast enough for many people out there..

After playing with the evo I now want a nexus one.. something faster may be nice.. but, I never once found myself while playing with the evo going " I wish I had something faster!" it was more.. "this is great.. I could settle on this and be happy"

While people want whats fastest.. Not everyone is an enthusiast.. most are content to find what works and ride it out.

With that said.. I'm a tech junkie and heroine would be cheaper >.>; but, for a phone the snapdragon is definitely sufficient.

However, unlike the original iphone release.. this is all more of a standard ordeal really..

When new phones are released it is typically better display better camra and faster.. Only for the enxt phone to do the same..

The one thing that would truly be a game changer, the thing that I was worried about, is video calling. It's the thing that if you have it, then all your friends will want it too and that leads to monopoly. But Apple botched it up by making it wifi-only while EVO and galaxy has it over 3G as well.
I doubt that very much.
Video calling has been around in the UK for a good few years and I don't know anybody that uses it. Very much of a gimick.
There is little or no value add in a video call apart from more expensive tariffs.
You want to make a proper video call? Use your laptop, netbook or computer.

I see video calling as a way to:

- Help friends and family fix their PC/router/kitchen sink remotely
- Help friends and family identify/resolve an issue with the car if they are stuck somewhere
- Watch my friends/family perform at events "in real-time" when I can't be there (missed two concerts last week alone)
- Share images "in real time" of places my desktop camera can not go
- Jerry Seinfeld can bootleg movies easier.
- Help co-workers find ports/servers/circuits in the data-center without having to drive in at 2am
- ...and of course, most importantly , share street racing footage in real-time a la "Fast and Furious".
- etc, etc.

Cellular video calling is free via Skype and Google Talk, over both 3G and WiFi. Just because "the UK" apparently finds no use for it, doesn't mean it is without merit.

Lol? No it is clearly stated on the ios promo vid, that video calling is wifi only. So if both iphones need to be on wifi, dur, what's the point? Whynot just use your pc or laptop or ipad.. wait... ipad doesn't have a cam.

Looks like when it comes to video calling, apple "just blew it"

I know iP4 is "WiFi only", I was referring to "video calling on cell phones as a whole", and responding to the post about it being available in the UK for years, but its only a "gimmick".

"I" have free video calling via Skype (sans Fring) and GTalk, over 3G and WiFI, and "I" can see me using it in multiple situations...not concerned about Apple/AT&T's limited implementation. I have an n900 and the feature is baked into the OS via the contacts and phone dialer, without any additional software required.

I'm not saying it should, or will be, the default contact method, but it has its uses, for more than just saying "hi, I miss you".

Its still kind of gimmicky though. I mean, we have webcam options in things like aim and msn... but how many people actually use them?

You would be surprised IOWA. Alot of people use videoconferencing on Skype (lol my entire family does).

Is Apple going to give developers access to the front facing camera or will it be for FaceTime only? (not that I am considering it, just wondering if anybody knows. If it is FaceTime only, that would be a shame as it would be unable to conference with PCs/other front cameraphones).

Take my dad for example. he's always asking me when video calling will come out. He would not just get one for himself but also for my sister so that he can see his grandkids. So what can I tell him? "well, the iPhone has video calling but only if both of you are in wi-fi zone and using iphones. And you need to switch to AT&T"
Video calling will never take off if they have to meet those conditions. It will take off when it can be be used by anyone, anywhere and at anytime.
That's why I am excited when I hear about the Samsung being launched in 110 countries and possibly coming to verizon. That's a game changer because like I said, people will not just get them for themselves but also convince others so that they could do the video calling.

quite simply nothing in the new iphone is a game changer:

-iOS4, nothing new, nothing innovative with half assed implimentation of old features
-iPhone 4 hardware, minor improvements, the sort of thing we would expect to see from HTCs infamously fast release scedual. It will be dated within 4-6 months.

This is just a minor tweek to try and scramble another year out of the iphone.

I would say this time next year either Apple produce a truely NEW phone or start seriously loosing their place in the smartphone market.
