iPhone 4s or Rezound

slaroche

Newbie
Let me first say that the phone selected will be for my wife (I'm an Android fan). I am struggling to figure out if I should get my wife a new iPhone 4s or the HTC Rezound as a replacement for her Droid Incredible. I am leaning towards the iPhone because her primary computer is a Macbook Pro and feel like the iCloud integration with iPhoto and iTunes would provide a more robust experience. She takes tons of pictures of our kids with the DINC, but they are mostly terrible (blurry, out of focus, underlit). The iPhone seems to have mastered the "camera phone" and I feel like she's be much happier using it vs. the DINC. I've seen the camera on the Rezound (youtube) and it seems comparable to the iPhone 4s although not quite as fast with the shutter. My question is this...what will she be losing by leaving Android for iPhone and do the benefits of the "Apple integration" outweigh the functionality lost in the move. Here's what I know she'll lose:

1. Turn-by-turn navigation (she doesn't really use it much if at all anyway on the dinc, and we can always use my phone)

2. The Google synchronization (her primary account is gmail, but from what I understand, the iPhone syncs pretty well with mail, contacts, calendar)

3. Root/ROMs (She could care less about this)

4. Customization (she doesn't do a lot of this on her phone as it is...she just sets a background wallpaper of our kids or something and moves icons around so she can see it)

What am I missing. I feel like I'm talking myself in to the iPhone here, but maybe I'm missing something. If it weren't for the Macbook Pro, I'd keep her on Android...but it is what it is.

Thanks,
Steve

I own a Galaxy S2 and my wife owns and iPhone 4s. Each has its advantages and they are both excellent phones. The Incredible was my last phone, and it to is an outstanding device. The Rezound is a great upgrade from the Incredible. But one thing you left out was form factor and I find many women to view this as important, more so than men. While my wife would consider an Android phone under certain circumstances, she loved the size of my Incredible (similar to the iPhone) and HATES the size of my SGS2 (similar to Rezound).

Best thing to do is take her to a Best Buy or VZW store where she can hold both phones and give you an honest opinion. Most people like consistency, so the logical upgrade is to the Rezound, but only if she can tolerate its size.

Sounds to me like you talked yourself into the iPhone. I agree with the 2nd post. Take her to Best Buy and let her hold and use both. I personally have not upgraded yet, because... all though both the Rezound and iPhone4s are excellent devices, both have drawbacks that keep me from upgrading. iPhone - removable battery, no SD Slot, iTunes... Rezound - Size only... I am hoping if I hold off till April that HTC or somebody will make an Android phone with 4G hardware that is small enough to fit into a 3.7" device. I have rooted my phone, but just because I can, not because I really do anything more with it then if it was not rooted. So that is not a concern for me either. I have suggested to my wife if she ended up wanting a smart phone to get the iPhone simply because of the ease of use. iOS is just a very simple easy to use strait forward OS.

Wow, this forum has really come to a crawl, most people must have already moved on.. Most posts haven't been touched in days... Us Inc owners are becoming few and far between I think... :-(..

What isn't so simple on an android? I hear people say this all the time, that the iPhone is so easy to use. If you can turn on a phone you should be able to use either phone . I don't understand the easy to use argument. Btw my rezound will be here Monday!

I thought of another drawback. The proprietary cables that you have to use to charge/sync the iPhones are expensive and subject to change with every new phone/device. It's nice to be able to use a standardized cable to charge/sync phones.

Apple's charging cables have remained largely unchanged since the original iPod. My wife has gone through 4 iPhones and a few iPods over the past few years. She has cables galore. They're also pretty easily and cheaply replaced these days.

I have owned both, and I guess I just simpy mean that I believe an Android device has a lot more you can do an customize with. I just think Android devices are more geared toward people who want to play around with the device. Apple is more this is how it works and unless you jail break it, there isn't a whole lot of changes you can do to it. Again, it's just simply my opinion.

It sounds like she won't take advantage of any of the features Android offers, so it really doesn't matter which one you get her. Since she isn't a power user you might even want to consider some lower end smartphones.

I saw someone mention form factor.. just wanted to throw out there a lot of women are suckers for aesthetics..

Which actually led my girlfriend to dump her iphone 4..

Hated the 3.5" screen while being almost as big as a phone with a 4" screen..

Also.. icloud fills up fast.

There is one thing about Apple that a girlfriend had a problem with, and that is customer service. Theyre customer service blows to say the least. And 99% of the place/stores/carriers you buy it from wont touch it or help you with anything beyond the "minor ropes" of using it after you walk out with it. They'll send you to an Apple store or give you their customer service 1800 number.

I think anyone who purchases an iPhone 4S now will be having serious regret once the iPhone 5 comes out. It's going to be a total redesign with a 4" screen, which for many is the perfect sweet spot for screen size. If you're wife can hold on to the Dinc for a few more months, might be worth it. Some reports say the 5 will be out in March, others say summer... but I think it will be worth it.

I don't understand this comment. New phones will always be on the horizon, and yes, the iPhone 5 will most likely be released in the summer. The 4s just came out. If the "5" is so much better, I could probably sell the 4s and make enough cash to make an off-contract purchase price similar to a NE2 price.

As for the size of the phone, I think this is personal preference. My wife keeps her DINC in the back pocket of her jeans, so having a larger screen isn't going to necessarily be more ergonomically correct. I think the larger screen of the Rezound is a bit of a drawback (for my wife).

My DINC is also eligible for an upgrade, so I may get the Rezound for myself. I'm not overly impressed with the Galaxy Nexus. The hardware specs aren't spectacular and the camera (from what I understand) isn't all that great. I'll probably wait to see it in person and hear reviews from users on the Verizon network before I make a decision...I may just stick with the DINC for a while longer (maybe ROM with ICS) and see what other phones are on the horizon.

If she uses the camera a lot she would probably love the 4S. Another pro for the iphone is the huge number of quality accessories on the market.

Personally, the small screen size is a major drawback for me. It feels cramped even though my current phone is only a 3.7".

I know you mentioned the iPhoto function as one aspect of iPhone that you are considering but remember that Android phones have Picasa as well. All the pictures I take with my phone get uploaded automatically into Picasa where I can organize them into albums.

Wait, what? The cables used to charge iOS devices have remained the same since the first iPhone. Meanwhile, I can't use Samsung chargers for HTC and vice versa.

Most phones these days use a standard micro-USB port for charging. If you don't have your charging cable with you, you can generally plug in any micro-USB cable into your phone to charge it. I have a Nokia N97, BlackBerry Tour and an HTC Desire Z. All 3 have a micor-USB port for charging and I can interchange the charging cables.

With the iPhone, their cables are proprietary. If you need to charge your phone and you don't have your cable with you (most people don't carry a charging cable with them), you need to find someone or some place where there is an iPhone cable in order to charge your phone.

Do iPhones ship with wall adapters now? Most phones, if not all, come with these now. I'm not sure about iPhones. I know that my iPod didn't (I had to buy an adapter separately).

Yup. They come with a USB cable and a USB to AC adapter.

Actually ALL phones now use the micro USB with the exception on apple. They are the only manufacturer that didn't agree to adopt a standard to reduce e-waste.
