iPhone 5 live launch

There is no telling what size battery is in the i5. Apple typically doesn't release those specs. As far as the Razr Maxx's battery goes, it may be huge, but the dimensions aren't that different from Apples.

When people say thing like that just smile and say, "I never did mind the little things." Then I'll throw in something like, "You keep living the dream for the rest of us."

The Maxx has a 3300 mah battery though and size wise it's a lot bigger. Not saying it's an inferior phone by any means, just that it achieves it's battery life by adding a battery that is huge by phone standards.

OK but you'd have a better point if the life and screen size were equal.

Fair enough. Still 4G phones have notoriously bad battery life and, in general, will not last for 8 hours of consistent LTE use. I have an Incredible 4g. It's got a 4' screen. If I used LTE actively for 8 hours my phone wouldn't last. The iPhone 5 claims it can. If that's true, then to me that's the most interesting feature about the phone.

Actually, I believe the size of the Razr Maxx and Maxx HD are pretty comparable to the i5. While it will be thinner (still not the thinnest smartphone, no matter what Apple claims), but with the huge dead space at the top and bottom it may actually be taller than the Maxx HD. Width wise, they both have pretty small bezels.

Even the Razr M which actually should have a smaller form factor should be able to match if not beat Apple's battery claims.

The battery in the Maxx is huge. It is one of the reasons it is so popular. You don't get a day and half out of a battery with out it being large. Like I said though, we don't know what the mAh rating is on the battery in the i5, yet. It could be 2,000 for all we know.

You're also viewing their figures as use. They could be stating 8 hours on 4G. Which wouldn't necessarily mean you are using it for 8 hours, but just on it for 8 hours.

Anyway, any figure they use is for the perfect conditions. It is like the estimate MPG on a new car sticker. In a lab those numbers are a achievable, but not in the real world under normal use.

I won't argue that I am curious to see how that works out for them though.

If GSMArena got the specs right the iP5 and M are pretty similar in size (of course the M has a larger screen :)):

iPhone5: 123.8 x 58.6 x 7.6 mm
Razr M: 122.5 x 60.9 x 8.3 mm

In reality I doubt the fractions of a mm or 10g weight difference are in any way noticable in reality.

What matters is of course battery life vs phone size - capacity is just a matter of how you achieve this. So let's see what real life says, but I agree that 8hrs 4G is unlikely to be 8 hrs active 4G use (unless the rest of the conditions are highly unrealistic indeed!). Real world use is what matters, and that rarely matches specs whoever the manufacturer is.

Size comparison - Motorola DROID RAZR MAXX Visual Size Comparison

The Razr Maxx looks considerably larger. It appears to be a quarter inch taller, and half an inch wider while it is about as thin.

Dang it. I just realized you're talking about the Razr M, not the Razr Maxx. The Razr M is about the same size as the iPhone 5. The M is slightly wider and the iPhone 5 is slightly taller.

Personally, the two things that would make me the maddest if I was an iPhone user would be the new connection and the fact that I'd have to wait for all the devs to update their apps.

If I was buy Apple's cables at $20 a pop and I now had to go out and get and adapter I'd be mad. Obviously the new connection doesn't do anything really different if an adapter will make it work the same. Do it is more like a micro usb, but is that an advantage? Just another thing to give Apple money for, IMHO.

The fact that there is no scaling in the OS and developers are going to have to "adjust" their apps for the new screen size boggles my mind. If you saw any of the pictures of CNN and Open Table (two apps they showed) the old version gave you a black border around the app so that the 3.5" version fit on the 4" screen. The new 4" version of the apps looked like complete rewrites. This isn't going to make customers or developers happy.

As others have said, pretty lack luster showing today. I think they spent more time on the new nano than they did the iPhone. I'm disappointed because I figured this would be driving some sort of innovation into the market place, which would be good for all of us. The lack of NFC was a huge disappointment though.

I, too, see very little to make me want the new version. Not sure what I was expecting to see but so far, not too impressed. I am actually rethinking my next phone. I'll likely go Apple but those huge Android--I wanna be a tablet--phones are impressive. Especially if you are old and the eyes are not HD and the brain is not 4G.

I did hear that Apple controls the tablet market as well as the laptop market share. At least they (apparently) controlled the laptop market for the last 3 months.

Here is what some stock wonks are suggesting. Apple's future is in China. Crack that market and Apple's fortunes will be out of sight. I prefer to wait for the market to settle a bit and review.

Good point there Anonymous, could make our Android guys lazy because there is less and less to compete with.

Totally underwhelming launch, didn't see anything that made me sit up and think wow I would love that on my next HTC. Even the apple die hards have to be a little disappointed with that.

Here is the thing, as they say. Is it possible that Apple never intended today's event to be spectacular? And is it possible that those in the press, you, me, the entirety of the web are so let down because they convinced themselves and we convinced ourselves that Apple would blow us all away with the gadget to end all gadgets?

And since that did not happen, some are mad at Apple for "promising" earth shattering news?

Not so sure we should be so bothered if Apple did not boast about something revolutionary arriving soon at Best Buy (well, they might be closed by release time) and today was simply a new product announcement.

Or some reasoning like that. Just a guess.

But did Apple actually make that claim? Not sure they would make it if it were not true. I am not saying you are wrong, but I would like a source. They might have said it was the thinnest iPhone ever made.

I guess I will review the press conference.

They do control the tablet market though their share is dropping. I've not heard of them controlling the laptop market.

China is very spec conscious. Remember that carriers do not subsidize the iPhone like they do in the US.

Curious how many Apple fans (like myself) will move over to something new after seeing the iphone5. I was very dissapointed with it. I think I killed the phone 5 in my own mind by over hyping it? Maybe it could never live up to what I wanted. Bigger than 4 inch screen would have been a start though. Either way the changes weren't enough sadly.

I don't know the guys name (Phil Schiller maybe?), but the Verge quotes him as saying, "The world's thinnest smartphone."

Now obviously I couldn't watch it live, so I having to rely on others to quote these things.

It is incorrect though. There are several phones that are thinner, but I doubt too many will call them on it.

Apple themselves called the iphone 5 the biggest upgrade in consumer electronics ever. how is that not wanting to have something special which obviously it is not...

These are sample responses a member of each group might have to the news of the new iPhone 5. This is so everyone can establish a baseline and determine where they might be.

Person with iPhone:
Fantastic, they made the screen bigger, improved the camera and added LTE.

iPhone Fanboy:
With these features Apple is way ahead of everyone else. This just proves that they stay at the forefront of technology.

Person with Android:
Cool, glad you guys got some new features.

Android Fanboy:
Stoopid iSheep. That phone isn't better than my <insert manufacturer> <insert model number>. Apple really is for idiots.

Normal person:
If any of you mention stupid cell phones one more time I'm going to hit someone with this brick.

Now that there's turn by turn and LTE, it is truly revolutionary....

But seriously, as an anti-Apple person, I was hoping for them to do something truly unique and innovative, in order to prove me wrong. Damn I hate being right sometimes

I heard somewhere that Samsung would sue Apple if iPhone 5 had LTE, and I hope they do, for pulling that "rectangular shape" lawsuit on them. And I admit that Apple does make nice hardware and there are shortcomings in Android that they need to fix, but I can't stand the fanboys who blindly just buy Apple just because they think it's the greatest thing ever. Biggest mind trick in human history, if you ask me

It was posted from the new York times yesterday i think. one of the news articles anyways.

Ok, I found it.

That was actually a Topeka Capital analyst named Brian White. He was speculating Apple stock at $1,111 on the 10th. I guess the joke is on him anyone who listens to him.

Bigger screen and 4G? Shouldn't Samsung be calling their lawyers? And when is somebody going to patent pointy corners, since Apple has the lock on rounded corners?

I took a look and apparently, I am either blind or my Google skills are lacking. I do know that they are calling the 5 "the biggest thing to happen to iPhone since iPhone."

You could be right. If you find a reliable source, post it please.

Could be he is just guessing. He probably listened to someone who does not know much, either. So, does anyone know which phones are thinner? And does a silly millimeter really matter one way or another?

I think that the shift for me was that it seemed like they were showing an established side, perhaps I would call today's event an institutional approach.

They didn't discuss everything and then say, "oh, one more thing" when everything else was shown.

As if they were resigned to changes being incremental now.
