iPhone 5 live launch

I think that glass arrangement is the coming thing. Reduce layers, reduce distance between layers, inter-layer reflections reduce, clarity improves, the One X proves that for a fact. This approach may be the next step, won't know until we can lay eyes on it.

For now though, it's reasonable to expect that replacing the front panel for cracks will cost more. I guess some won't like that, others won't care.

I do expect that it does, or will, lower manufacturing costs, typically a good thing when they can do that without sacrificing quality.

We all know the 5 will be a big seller...when has Apple released a product in recent years that has done considerably well?

Lots of iPhone owners have all these accessories that will become useless with the new port. There will be an adapter but many of these docks were designed for a direct plug in. I don't know what the reaction will be like.

Sad thing for us - accessory makers will step up to the plate for them and release new goodies. And someone will get rich with an accessory dock adapter.

We'll continue to be grateful for an occasional dock or universal car mount never actually tested with any high end Android phones. :(

Well most of these things were made before Android took off and they didn't want to change. Now they all have to start from scratch and might as well be more universal since there are lots of androids out there.

<snip> one chip for all cellular bands unlike other phones with two. This is the reason it had awesome battery life. It's the only phone In the world with this new chip.<snip>

Apparently this new radio tech is going to be a problem for simultaneous voice and data. According to Verizon you can surf and talk at the same time. This also looks to be a problem on Sprint and At&t as well.

All of the morning shows today were basically a free advertisement for Apple every half hour. I don't understand why the networks feel the need to give the giant more free publicity for everything they do. The other morning, one of the anchormen was grinning ear to ear like an idiot, holding up his two iPhones for the camera and saying how he felt like a kid waiting for Christmas morning waiting for the iPhone 5. Just bizarre to me.

Because the evil empires marketing machine is at work. give all the anchormen, women, hosts, tv stations etc a little bit of money/product and away you go...its the bestest greatest phone ever...ha ha...what a joke!

Not necessarily, unless you've read something that I missed(?).

The Evo 4G LTE has a single world modem embedded in the S4 processor and it supports voice and data on CDMA via SVDO and will support VoLTE when they turn that on for voice + data.

The Galaxy Nexus got a lot of love on those shows during pre-release.

If it's a newsworthy phone, they slurp it up. :)

I'm just reporting what I'm reading.

I see it now.

http://www.macrumors.com/2012/09/13/verizon-iphone-5-will-not-offer-simultaneous-voice-and-data/

An Apple spokeswoman told The Times, "It is not yet possible to do simultaneous voice and data on networks that use CDMA for voice and LTE for data in a single radio design."

Boy howdy, there's more double talk in that one seemingly innocent and clear statement than I can shake a stick at.

Why am I not surprised? LoL

It's not just the nfc...What is the iphone 5 bringing to the table that android hasn't? And I didn't just mention nfc? And either way you look at it, whether you use it or not. It's a feature that the iphone doesn't have. I use Google wallet daily. It helps me to budget cash I want to set aside for buying lunch at work. So for me it's incredibly useful. I don't have to worry about going all the way back to my toolbox to grab my wallet bc my phone has the same function. The only neat thing I see on the new iphone is the charging port which seems pretty dang neat.

But why should Apple try to compete with Android? What's wrong with building a good product and not worry about what Android is doing. If Apple thought it was important, I think they might have added the features you think are missing.

Not sure how many people are clamoring for NFC. I think many are scared of the possibilities. Frankly, I do not trust any device when it comes to my financial/banking information.

I was amazed at just how much Apple changed the iPhone.

I've never seen an Android phone get that kind of airtime. If one does get mentioned, its usually along the lines of, "well, here's this new Android phone that's trying to catch up with the iPhone".:banghead::puke::D

The Galaxy Nexus really got a lot of dedicated air time. A lot. ;)

First phone with HD? The tv people were all over it.

The reason that most are upset about the lack of NFC is that inclusion on an iPhone would ensure mass adoption by retailers. It would also make NFC tags readily available for those that wish to use them. In many ways, the iPhone having this feature would help to advance the features and benefits of it for everyone.

Think of NFC the same way you might an app like Key Ring on Android. The app allows you to keep all those discount cards (Safeway, Kroger, Barnes & Noble, Pet Smart, Sports Authority, etc) on your phone and out of your wallet. While key ring is wonderful there are still many retailers that use very old scanners and they still can't properly scan your bar code from your phone's screen. Now imagine they don't have to. You can just walk up and tap your phone against the scanner or the credit card machine. The computer sees your card info and auto adjusts your bill.

Now image that same technology will automatically turn on your bluetooth and connect it to your car once you get in. It will automatically turn your wifi on or off when you enter the house. You could use it as a way to lock or unlock your front door, your computer, unlock/lock your car or even start your car. It could grant you access to work or clock you in. It could allow guests to sign in to your guest wifi network. It could sync your phone to your tv as a remote. It could be used to check the ingredients in a pizza you are going to cook. It could put you on the reservation list at a restaurant. It could help you keep track of what equipment you used today at the gym. Even if you don't want it to replace your credit cards, what about gift cards? Wouldn't it be great to avoid carrying those things around? Especially when you have no idea what the remaining balance is on one. This would allow you to carry the cards and know the balance.

There are so many possible uses beyond just banking with this technology it isn't even funny. Think of something you would like to be able to do just by tapping your phone against something and with NFC it is a possibility. That is why it is so interesting. There are things we've never even thought of before out there just waiting.

My view is every time something designed to simplify our lives arrives, the darker side emerges soon after. I can unlock my door remotely as it is. My key cards got me in the door of the place I once worked and I never know what toppings will end up on my pizza until I scrounge the refer.

As for the pizza, for the record, last Saturday, it was sausage, cheese, peppers and onions. The other was anchovies, cheese and onions, served with a nice salad and some beer.

I leave the house and simply open the door and press a button. I can leave the bulky phone at home and carry my little key chain thingy. And is it really important to have a phone with the capability to tell you what equipment you used at the gym? Really? If that is what you want, go for it. For me, I rely on my memory.

To be completely honest, I never darken the doorway of a gym. To much work. A nice single malt scotch (neat) served on the club's patio is easier.

DISCLAIMER: I am 78.965% Luddite, so view my disdain for the wild increase in technology. People will demand it after they are told they need it and fact is, we do not need even smartphones.

With that in mind. I was once 85% Luddite but I bought a cell phone.

Seems we humans will soon lose our minds and our limbs will grow smaller and smaller until we no longer have them. We will lose them from lack of use. We will be at the mercy of our phones and a bunch of tags. I am betting the 900 plus exabyte facility the gubbernment is building (look it uo) will partially be devoted to monitoring our NFC and related taggy thingys

Today, I was actually able to time a pot of beans cooking in the pressure cooker without my Android phone or iPad. Absolutely amazing. I wanted to add a tag but I thought someone would swallow it and sue me.

I used an electric analog clock and it actually worked.

Things went well. I added some bacon, ham hocks and for a little more Pork Power, a slice of salt pork. You should have been there . . . the feast was glorious.
