I agree that it hasn't really caught on yet. I'm in a populated area(Vegas), and a search of Mastercard's paypass vendors doesn't turn up a whole lot near my house, at least not places I would regularly patronize. McDonald's seems to be about the most reliable bet. The only times I've really used it is to show it off to my Apple owning friends.
And coming from a rural town, I can fully back up Nick's statements about the technophobia. Some of it's money, but IMO the largest part is not giving a crap. Cell phones aren't important to them, and they're proud of it. If they do have a smartphone, they don't know anything about it, and unless it's an iPhone, they don't even know what it is. Lots of prepaid devices.
