The simplest way to put an end to your concern is by telling you that the S3 does not feel in any way like a children's toy.
I too thought I wouldn't like a lighter bigger phone, coming from a HTC Desire which felt very solid in my hand.
Well the good news is that even though the S3 is 2g lighter than the Desire while being bigger, it doesn't actually feel light. It is relatively lighter, yes, but still feels heavy enough in my hand to have a premium feel. The glass front and the glazed back feel nice, and not at all cheap. In fact the finish on the back of my marble white S3 reminds me of enamel.
I don't know what reviewers were talking about when they said it feels cheap and plasticy. I know it has been an attack leveled at the S2 in its time, but I think this phone is in another league again, materials-wise.
I cannot speak for the blue version, but my white S3 feels awesome.
(As an aside, modern bicycles are lighter than earlier ones, but they don't feel like children's toys do they?)
Thank you, FINALLY someone that understands what I'm getting at in this thread.
I do not intend this to be mean-spirited, but you seem to not be aware of what is and isn't out there with regards to smartphones. You think a phone would never be made out of liquid metal or kevlar or even titanium? Check out the Motorola Droid Razr for kevlar.
The next iPhone is still rumored to either be made of liquid metal or a portion of it will be made from it. Apple already uses liquid metal for the sim release key. And liquid metal is made from amoung other things, titanium. An all titanium body is probably unlikely, but that doesn't exclude titanium being utilized in parts.
You also contradicted yourself in your last two posts, which leads me to the conclusion you haven't really done much research on this topic.
OK, I was wrong there are plenty of liquid metal/titanium and Kevlar phones out there it seems.
I didn't contradict myself in my original post either, I was simply saying the SIXAXIS PS3 controller to me personally feels terrible in my hands, like a children's toy. Whereas the xbox 360 controller feels meaty, weighty and sits great in my hands like a premium adult gaming controller.
I was trying to use that analogie and apply it to the way I approach getting a new phone.
And no I haven't done much research in the topic of what phones are made out of kevlar/titanium/liquid metal. The majority of phones are made out of plastic/polycarbonate or glass/stainless steel as far as I'm aware.
I wasn't making the point that the phone has to be made out of a premium material to be good, I just want it to feel like a premium adult product in my hand and not a kiddy's phone is all.
You might wanna do some research there are already phones with those materials. Plus weight does not equal premium quality. Never understood how all glass makes iPhone premium. Makes It delicate to me if you have to put a huge case around it because any drop and it breaks.
Personally hate phone cases, and have NEVER used one on any of my iPhones.
I dropped my iPhone 3G years ago and had to have it replaced, but that due to my own stupidity, dropping it on concrete and me being extremely drunk rather than the phone's lack of resilience, and even then the whole phone worked like normal, just the touch screen was smashed.
Just because its heavier Doesent mean the body is better the s3 is built good as for the iphone 4s and it beeing glass and metal Doesent make it all mighty and well built if you let the s3 drop and the iphone 4s drop I think you will be heading for the apple store while the s3 will be just a little scratch and ding. I don't know what the ps3 controller had to do with this but just because its lighter than the xbox controller Doesent mean the ps3 wont survive a drop or last as long. And Its your choice I personaly am done with apple no matter what but its your phone and your decision and your opinion
I'll point you to this Youtube video, where I think you'll find the 4S fairs better than the S3 as it actually still works after the drop whereas the S3 just packs up completely
