iPhone Got their Fix, Where is Ours Moto?

Because Apple has only a few devices, and a ton of leverage in the market, they have the ability to push updates without approval of the carriers. Unfortunately, Motorola has no such agreement - Verizon must approve all OTA updates.

It's not just Moto; in fact, I'll bet that it's Verizon that's sitting on this.

yeah this post doesn't make sense at all.

Apple products get their updates straight from apple. Similar to Nexus devices getting them straight from Google.

This is not news to me really. The update process for Android phones that aren't vanilla android is very time consuming.

Moto works on an update with Google,
Moto sends what they think is a valid update to VZW for Review
VZW rejects update for whatever reason
Start over from the top
Repeat 4 times

The DX had 6 diff versions of GB before VZW finally approved one to issue its customers...then guess what. Shortly after that they issued another patch to fix what the update broke.

Don't be surprised that when you get your update something else is broke or something didn't get fixed. This is common.

Well, apparently some people like to complain without knowing the facts.

Let's remember one thing really really carefully here.

Motorola did not write Android. Google does.

Google did not make the BIONIC. Motorola does.

Google did not sell the BIONIC. VZW does.

whereas:

Apple wrote iOS

Apple designed and had built the iPhone 4S

Apple sells the iPhone 4S.

I think it should be relatively clear that with our phones it seems to be a case of too many cooks in the kitchen. With Apple, it's all contained under one umbrella.

And, personally, I like being able to deal with multiple companies, rather than one company for everything. I mean, I've seen jail broken iOS but has anyone seen a customized iOS like CM, or hardcore theming like more ROM developers than I can think of?

Thought not. Thanks. I'll stick to Android.

Interestingly enough, We're seeing the same thing here with the leaked updates. It's funny, I bet if Motorola had released the update as it is right now and any one of these people complaining had worse battery life / connection drops / camera lags, they'd be SCREAMING about the failed update.

I, for one, am happy that they're taking they're time and making sure it actually works, first.

Oh, and as for the networks selling the iPhone - OK, granted, that's 2 companies to deal with - but the iOS updates are completely independent of carrier - you plug in your phone to iTunes and it does it via that interface (unless things have changed - that is what my sister does with her iPhone).

Ours are OTA - over The Air - as in over the Cellular Network.

Three networks (in the US - many more worldwide) as Sprint is now selling the 4S. And, as of this update, things have changed; all updates can be installed OTA as well. I installed 5.0.1 on my iPod Touch that way yesterday. (In fact, I haven't tethered my Touch in a few weeks now - as an Android user, I have surely become accustomed to that, and prefer it.)

Its still Apple selling the Iphones even in the VZ stores. A friend works at one, got the bionic at a discount price, but she cant touch iPhone prices and if it breaks, you go back to apple, not the VZ store.

Having dealt with both VZW and Apple support, I think that's a plus, actually.

Just to amplify/correct what I mentioned here, I believe that the iOS OTA can be delivered WiFi only, not over 3G. So, you can update OTA from a WiFi download, or download in iTunes and update while tethered. So far, all of my Android OTA updates (all two of them ;) ) were delivered over WiFi or 3G, if I am not mistaken. (I know for sure WiFi, as I have done both updates that way.)

Definitely over 3G as well. My DROID got notifications when I was nowhere near a WiFi and downloaded (painfully slow) OTA. Over the 3G network. And it was noticeable too.
