Apple sells the iPhone 4S.
Well, apparently some people like to complain without knowing the facts.
Oh, and as for the networks selling the iPhone - OK, granted, that's 2 companies to deal with - but the iOS updates are completely independent of carrier - you plug in your phone to iTunes and it does it via that interface (unless things have changed - that is what my sister does with her iPhone).
Ours are OTA - over The Air - as in over the Cellular Network.
I think it should be relatively clear that with our phones it seems to be a case of too many cooks in the kitchen. With Apple, it's all contained under one umbrella.
Its still Apple selling the Iphones even in the VZ stores. A friend works at one, got the bionic at a discount price, but she cant touch iPhone prices and if it breaks, you go back to apple, not the VZ store.
Three networks (in the US - many more worldwide) as Sprint is now selling the 4S. And, as of this update, things have changed; all updates can be installed OTA as well. I installed 5.0.1 on my iPod Touch that way yesterday. (In fact, I haven't tethered my Touch in a few weeks now - as an Android user, I have surely become accustomed to that, and prefer it.)
Definitely over 3G as well. My DROID got notifications when I was nowhere near a WiFi and downloaded (painfully slow) OTA. Over the 3G network. And it was noticeable too.
