iphone outdated??

Hey guys. I was wondering what everyone thinks about the iPhone. The hot rumor is that it will be annoucned Tuesday in New York. My question is, will the iPhone be totally outdated? Seeing that the moto bionic and thunderbolt will be hitting Verizon soon. Will there be anything the iPhone has on these other upcoming devices? Should anyone even consider the iPhone? Thanks for any help.

The iPhone is losing. It still has mass appeal because it looks and functions well, but sooner or later people are going to realise that there are other phones out there that can do more.

The next iPhone is going to have to be pretty special to keep up.

Top of the line hardware was never really Apple's selling point, with anything IMO. They have always been upper-mid range and I think that still stands true. What is dated, IMO, is the OS. As long as it remains trouble free, there will still be some appeal though. The every day consumer would probably gladly be locked down tight knowing that if something goes wrong all they need to do is take the phone into the Apple store for a new one than deal with Android. Apple has an amazing exchange policy, one that I don;t think can be beat by any other company, at least here in the US.

Apple rarely exchanges your phone for another new one, most of the times, those are refurbished units.

iTunes is what hook many in.

Wall Street Journal said yesterday that the Verizon announcement next Tuesday will be for the Verizon iPhone, not the next iPhone 5.

The iPhone should never be judged by hardware alone. It's only outdated when a new iPhone comes out. Even then, Apple does a great job of supporting at minimum two generations.

Apple does an excellent job of marrying their software to their chosen hardware. If you like what the iPhone does, and you're ok with its limitations, then it's a solid purchase. I prefer Android, but my wife has an iPhone 4. They each have their uses.

That's exactly right

To me, its like comparing apples to oranges. There are things both OS' offer. It really comes down to what the consumer wants and what they can live without.

To be fair, the Android handset you bought yesterday has already been surpassed. I bought my DInc 6 months ago when it was very close to the bleeding edge. Now there are nearly half a dozen phones you could purchase right now that have better hardware and that says nothing about the phones we saw at CES.

Software wise, I think iOS is very dated. No true multi-tasking. No widgets. No flash. No custom keyboards. No notifications in one place. No tethering. Heck, RIM and WP7 offer some or all of these things and Android has all of them.

I have the fascinate currently. I (like many others) have been waiting for the iPhone for years on Verizon. I love the size and screen on the fascinate, but I'm always looking to upgrade. Now that the iPhone is so near, I don't think that it would be any kind of upgrade for me. I do want video chatting as I travel quite a bit. I really like the fact that some of the new devices will have higher resolution front facing cameras.

Apple has given me two new phones. Once, my iPhone was clearly water-damaged, voiding any warranty. And once, the display cable came detached so I got it replaced instead of opening it up.

I don't think iPhone 4 is out-dated... High resolution screen, LED flash, 720p recording, great editing capabilities, etc. What is out-dated, is the provider. Hopefully it does better on Verizon. Too bad it's not 4G...

How do you the replaced units were new instead of refurbed?

That may be the case, but they look brand new (I have never seen or heard of anyone complain about scratches or issues like they do with most any other refurbished brands). FWIW, refurbished doesn't necessarily mean bad. And also, they do have actualy new units in refurb boxes. GF ran my iPhone through the wash day after launch day and they gave me a new one out of a "refurb" box. There is no way they had refurbs in just 24 hours of launch. The point is, you walk in and they swap it out. Again, a far better deal than most handset manufacturers provide, which was my point to begin with.

I agree with most of what you said here, but how, exactly, is the provider outdated? I am not really following your logic there.

Let's be clear on this rumor - the Wall Street Journal - mondo good track record for Apple users - says that the iPhone is coming to Verizon on Tuesday, announcement coming from Big Red in NYC.

Also note - Apple reserves new product announcements strictly to themselves. If this is anything other than a CDMA iP4, prepare for me to be shocked. Likely the iP5 - whatever it may be - won't arrive anywhere until normal about-year end-of-life cycle for the iP4.

I also read that the iP3gs is now available at AT&T for $50 - that's right, I read fifty smackers. Certainly a low-end phone by our standards today, and way not running Android and way married to AT&T - but - maybe a pretty good second phone or something for those in the family with fewer bucks.

No need to hate on Apple, they simply came first. Android is better technically and even the new iOS is outdated compared to Android, but the world would be a boring place if we all thought the same.

Remember Ford's Model T (T-Model to many ;)) where Henry said, you can have it in any color you want so long as it's black? Pretty good car (I can personally vouch for that), everyone bought one.

The iPhone has become much like the Model T of the smartphones - pretty good so lots of people have them but only comes one way. Android's simply the next step.

I agree to most of this, except with the multitasking comparison as well as tethering. FWIW, it feels the same multitasking on android as it does on iOS. All "backgrounding" really is for the vast majority of apps is a save state, on both OS's now. Now, handling what is "running in the background" on iOS is less than elegant, but for all intents and purposes, they are the same, really. There also is tethering via iOS. Much like on android, you have to pay to tether in the US, unless you do a few tweaks. Also, something must be said about the keyboards. While iOS only has one, it is done very well. I am ALMOST as happy with all the Android keyboards, but not quite. Editing text and typing super fast is incredibly easy on iOS and it gets the words you are trying to type correctly more frequently than Android. Don't get me wrong, Android works, but the keyboard on iOS is just that little amount better to make it noticeable.

It was his version of humor - and with humor, mileage varies according to each of us.

When you run into something like that here where the humor is lost or seems pointless, just ignore and move on.

If it's offensive or requiring help from staff, just hit the !Report button to the left of the post in question.

If I'd thought he'd meant anything offensive, I'd have taken it down already.

We like to flexible, a little class clowning is ok, we're all adults. If it gets to be too much, I'll just clean the thread out.

Carry on, PM me if you have questions, no need of anything more off-topic here to your main questions and point.

Id like to make a small note when it comes to this announcement. I personally dont think its an announcement I think its an announcement about Verizon doing away with our NE2 program and annual upgrade, and that as of jan 16th all verizon customers will be eligible for upgrades and promo pricing.

Sources: my training program at work (i cant SS anything since its tracked and i cant access uploading sites.)

the way I look at it. Apple would never ever ever let another company take the spotlight to one of their product launches, nor would they let it be somewhere other than the HQ.

Yeah - I think I also read in the same blogs where I got my info that it's now going from a 12 month to a 20 month upgrade cycle or something like that?

correct, the earliest you will have an upgrade will be 20months, and you wont get your 50$ credits anymore just standard upgrade pricing. heres the text from the email telling us to do the training

Team,

Verizon Wireless will be changing the equipment upgrade policy for customers. Beginning January 16, 2011 customers will be eligible for promotional pricing as well as special offers that we make available. Changes include the retirement of the following programs:

- Annual Upgrades: customers on 2yr contracts will no longer be able to upgrade in months 13-20 of their 24 month contract as a standard policy.

- New Every 2 ( NE2 ) : Customers will no longer be enrolled in NE2 at the time of activation/upgrade after January 16th.
- VZW Return Policy will become a 14 day return policy which Wireless City will match. Customers will have 14 days to determine their device needs without paying a termination fee.

Remember, both of these programs are for customers on 2yr contracts only. SO customers on 1yr contracts are not impacted by these changes. Ensure to read the attached document thoroughly!
