I sold my i5 and went to the Nexus. Instantly I stopped getting messages from iphone users. This is just not for Nexus but since its my current device Im posting here.
I expected it and did all the usual:
1) Unregister device on Apple site https://supportprofile.apple.com/‎
2) Change itunes password https://iforgot.apple.com/password/verify/appleid‎
3) turn off "find phone" in cloud https://www.icloud.com/#find
4) turn on my old iPhone 4 and register imessage and turn off, also make sure no other devices are using that # for imessaging
5) called Apple support and had my number unregistered from
Apple says that I should have killed imessage on the i5 while it still had cell signal (before formatting). Thats great and all but what if the phone was lost or destroyed? I used the i4 over wifi to turn off imessage and it may have been some of the issue. But, even after they "deleted" my phone number certificate, iPhones still have issue texting me.
One solution is to tell those texting that once it gives the ! and "not sent" to tap the exclamation, and hit "send as text" and it changes to green. After a couple times it realizes thats its not an imessage device and texting resumes. I tested it with my wifes 5c and my work phone i4. They can also turn off imessage, but that may be a hassle for them.
I do not believe that one should have to do all this to switch phones. I will break out my old Eris before I use the iPhone as a personal device again...
